I'm currently rereading some of my childhood favourites on my Kindle and it's lovely ☺️

So far I've read A Traveller in Time, Marianne Dreams, Green Smoke, Charlotte Sometimes, A Stitch in Time and loads of Enid Blyton.

What were your beloved books as a child? I also loved Carbonel, Gobbolino the Witch's Cat, Tom's Midnight Garden, the Noel Streatfeild books and E Nesbitt.

Malory Towers and I love reading them on my kindle now too. Although I do now have some sympathy with Gwen, Darrell could be very pious at times.

Th tv show on iPlayer is very good. Some modernity included but overall good.

burnoutbabe · 02/03/2025 22:02

Sweet valley high did a 10 years later book -confidential. Then sweet life. Maybe on kindle?

And chalet girls grow up is a highly controversial book in chalet circles. I love it!

Mallory Towers - all, several times.
Famous Five - all, several times.
Nancy Drew - many mysteries, several times.
Geoffrey Trease - author of historical fiction. I read pretty much everything he published at least five times. I've only met one other person who ever read his books.
Frances Hodgson Burnett - The Secret Garden and A Little Princess - countless times.
Agatha Christie books even though I knew who dunnit after the first go round.
A book by Patricia Lynch, Orla of Burren.
A book by Walter Macken, Island of the Great Yellow Ox.
Same ^ author, Flight of the Doves.

LovelyJubly12 · 02/03/2025 22:35

Oh yes, how could I forget Agatha Christie!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 02/03/2025 22:37

There was a series of books about mice and cats that I loved Red something? There was another one about a boy and ?? his bear flying to an island that I remember loving aa well. Would have been late 80s time.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 02/03/2025 22:43

I know she's frowned upon here but I still love a bit of Jacqueline Wilson, Double Act and The Lottie Project being top of the list.

Astronautstar · 02/03/2025 22:46

I really enjoyed Monica Dickens and Angela Brazil (?) as well. Also a book by Lynne Reid Banks about growing up in a kibbutz called One more river, I think.

There was a book by Beverley Cleary (?) called Almost Fifteen which was very sweet.

I wasn't allowed to read the babysitter's club, Nancy drew, Judy Blumenthal, point horror etc. However I devoured Enid Blyton.

I feel that Susan Cooper is an amazing writer and I should have enjoyed her but didn't because I was always too scared to read on.

I loved a collection of short stories about a family of girls called 'All in the blue unclouded weather' by an Australian called Robin Klein. I still think it's massively underrated and would highly recommend.

The children of green knowe has some stunning passages.

Astronautstar · 02/03/2025 22:50

There was also a book in the school library that I've never been able to find again. It features a family arriving at a remote hotel (I think) in a blizzard. There is a picture on the wall of a snow scene and someone notices that it depicts where they are - and rather sinister figures can just be made out trudging towards the same location through the snow. It was a brilliant idea and I didn't have the chance to read the book.

Did anyone else read any Malcolm Saville books? I loved the Lone Pine series and some of his other series too.

I loved the Lone Pine series! Was just going to come on here to say so.
Also Nancy Drew, Mrs Frisby and the Rats of Nimh, all of Colin Dann's animal stories. I've just also remembered a couple I read several times and loved - Homecoming and Dicey's Song by Cynthia Voight. And my ultimate favourite, heartbreaking read - Goodnight Mr Tom.

mathanxiety · 02/03/2025 23:31

Also, the St Clare's books, Chalet School books, and Anne of Green Gables.

I also had an anthology of articles by humorist Patrick Campbell, which I still read.
