I'm currently rereading some of my childhood favourites on my Kindle and it's lovely ☺️

So far I've read A Traveller in Time, Marianne Dreams, Green Smoke, Charlotte Sometimes, A Stitch in Time and loads of Enid Blyton.

What were your beloved books as a child? I also loved Carbonel, Gobbolino the Witch's Cat, Tom's Midnight Garden, the Noel Streatfeild books and E Nesbitt.

Wow, some of these are books I had completely forgotten, and some I've never heard of - I'm making a list! People Might Hear You sounds really intriguing, I think I might go for that one next.

Stig of the Dump, Black Beauty, Jane Eyre, The Weirdstone of Brisingamen, Watership Down. The Chronicles of Narnia, I got a special edition box-set of all the books as a Christmas present. Then the Hobbit, which led to the Lord of the Rings books. Then I got stuck into Anne Macaffry Dragon books, and I started reading Stephen King at a bit too young, terrified myself but couldn't put them down.

Milly Molly Mandy.
Family from one end street.
Charlotte's Web.
The water babies.

Oh I thought the Family from One end Street was brilliant!
I got introduced to it at Primary school when it was one of the books read out to us at school - the school day always ended with the teacher reading to us for a short while.
I bought a copy of it and it's sequal when I was an adult and I've still got it.

When Marnie Was There

RomainingToBeSeen · 01/03/2025 20:23

Laura Ingalls Wilder
Loads of Enid Blyton - Malory Towers, St Clare's, Naughtiest Girl, Famous Five, Secret Seven
Noel Streatfeild - Ballet Shoes, White Boots, the Gemma series
Sweet Dreams and Sweet Valley High when I got a bit older

I've listened to a lot of these as an adult on Audible and find them very soothing when I can't sleep - I still remember many of them almost word for word.

Looking back, although we had lots of books and a local library, we had nothing like the quantity of new books that my DC have/had. Therefore I think we did read books over and over again as there wasn't an Amazon sending through new reading matter every week!

Watership down and animal books by Joyce stranger

Still have my original copy of watership down 😳

Oh I had forgotten the Joyce Stranger books!!! Loved them too and wanted to be a vet. Also read the complete “All Creatures Great and Small” series. Also Shadow the Sheepdog (Enid Blyton) and Bambi/ Bambi’s children books too. I was mad about animals (also used to get that magazine in the 90s!)

Pianoaholic · 01/03/2025 20:24

I remember one called When Marnie was There, does anyone remember the author?
It was set in Norfolk, a bit of a ghost story and quite spooky.
Also loved Judy blume Anne of green gables, Charlotte Sometimes and Marianne Dreaming (these last two were also spooky)

The Wind on the Moon by Eric Linklater

Opening in the fictitious village of Midmeddlecum, evidently in contemporary rural England, it features two girls whose father is absent during a war. They pursue magical, bizarre, or dangerous experiences. A "wind on the moon" is said to be the cause, "making them behave badly for a year".[2]

Jacqueline Wilson - the ‘Girls’ series

Hope you've read the new sequel that's just come out - Think Again? It's a nice read if fairly predictable.

Loved a lot of these too especially Drina, Chalet School, Cynthia Voight.

Pianoaholic · 01/03/2025 20:27

It's now a film too although I haven't seen it. Anime, so probably not my thing.
