I'm currently rereading some of my childhood favourites on my Kindle and it's lovely ☺️

So far I've read A Traveller in Time, Marianne Dreams, Green Smoke, Charlotte Sometimes, A Stitch in Time and loads of Enid Blyton.

What were your beloved books as a child? I also loved Carbonel, Gobbolino the Witch's Cat, Tom's Midnight Garden, the Noel Streatfeild books and E Nesbitt.

This is a lovely thread.

Did anyone read any of the Bobbsey Twins books? American. I think they lived in Vermont, or maybe that’s just where one of the series was set.

A Candle in her Room
The Hobbit
Heidi
The Narnia Books
The Homeward Bounders - Dianna Wynne Jones and lots of her other books
Tanith Lee

Edited to correct a title.

RedOnyx · 01/03/2025 22:03

Oh, I completely forgot the Gemma series by Noel Streatfeild. I found them in a charity shop and was immediately obsessed.

quirkychick · 01/03/2025 22:05

Rosemary Sutcliffe books, too.

AdaColeman · 01/03/2025 22:08

Treasure Island
The Railway Children
The Secret Garden
The Eagle of the Ninth
The Emerald Crown
The Silver Sword

Green Eggs and Ham. I do not like them Sam I Am.

I also read a lot of Point Horror and a Tween/ early Teen.

LattewithAlmondCroissant · 01/03/2025 22:12

Also Nancy Drew!

We had a library locally but the children's / teen section was fairly limited so re-reading was a necessity!

Lots of those mentioned about, and I have to add The Dark Is Rising series by Susan Cooper. Absolutely loved these, along with the Alan Garner series starting with The Weirdstone of Brisingamen. Happy days. My sister and I read, re-read and re-re-read these ones, and both still love fantasy today.

@MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot We also had a beautiful illustrated copy of The Water Babies!

The Dark is Rising series was also
excellent!

The Secret Garden, Harry Potter series, A Little Princess, Heidi, then as a preteen began the Discworld series and reread many times. I'm still a rereader, love the cast familiarity of revisiting a well read book and feeling like you're visiting a much loved place.

Yourinmyspot · 01/03/2025 22:21

The Famous Five
Mallory Towers
The Enchanted Wood trilogy
Judy Blume
Tintin

Growlybear83 · 01/03/2025 22:23

I can't believe that is forgotten The Wonderful Isle of Ulla-Gapoo and the Tom Pig books!. When I was really young and just learning to read, my Dad bought me a new Mary Mouse book each week and I re-read them until they fell apart.

JaffaCake70 · 01/03/2025 22:34

I've re-purchased some of my favourite childhood books and taken great pleasure in reading them. The ones that spring to mind are:

Dame Slap and Her School - Enid Blyton
A Bottled Cherry Angel - Jean Ure
Sugar Mouse - John Branfield
The Funny Guy - Grace Allen Hogarth
Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret - Judy Blume

We always had Richard Scarry books in the house too which were very entertaining 😀

Yougavemesixtysummers · 01/03/2025 22:34

I like Carbonel so much I named my black cat after him, most people haven't heard of the book so it's lovely to see others have read and enjoyed it as well!
