Boring - help me choose cutlery

BellesAndGraces · 01/03/2025 08:48

I can’t make another single decision. I’m all decisioned out. But I have to buy cutlery this weekend. So please help me choose between the following:

I swing between “who even cares about cutlery” and “I’m a grown up, I should really have nice cutlery”.

I wouldn't go gor the Arthur Price shophie ones because I wouldn't used the cake fork or cheese knife ( even tho I eat way to much cheese!)
So they just gather dust.

The John Lewis ones look OK but I'd want a better look at the handles as I dislike round handles, they are harder to grip.

Out of the 3 I'd go for the Rattail set but I'd have no use for the smaller knives and forks . It's hard to tell if they are dessert or starter cutlery.

For me it's how they feel in your hand , they may look pretty on the table but that's no use if they are to heavy or to light in your hand .

I would get Robert Welch Radford. We’ve had ours 20 years, it feels great in your hands and is the perfect weight. I really notice it when I use uncomfortable cutlery now. It’s easy to add in extra bits as you need. Couldn’t recommend it enough.

yumyum33 · 01/03/2025 09:27

I like the John Lewis set best.

I really like this set, thank you!

The shape of the first ones is lush

Mulledjuice · 01/03/2025 09:32

Have you held any of them in your own hands?

BellesAndGraces · 01/03/2025 10:01

@Mulledjuice i haven’t, but I’m also currently using an ikea set so anything decent will be an improvement!

I second Robert Welch, we have the Kingham set and love it. Plus they have the advantage that you can buy individual additional items online in case you somehow lose a fork or want to add to your set.

CMOTDibbler · 01/03/2025 10:17

I just bought a Robert Welch set (contour noir) and they do trial sets which are fully refundable which was really helpful to sit and hold the different ones

OrangeBlossom28 · 01/03/2025 10:22

We also have the Robert Welch Redford cutlery and are really pleased with it.

OrangeBlossom28 · 01/03/2025 10:23

Can't edit on the app - Radford not Redford!

BellesAndGraces · 01/03/2025 10:37

I think it’s a choice between the Robert Welch Radford and Kingham. Main difference seems to be in the shape of the fork. The Radford fork spears (?) are longer and slimmer.

Can you order both? I can't remember which set we had but the first Robert Welch set felt slightly oddly weighted and didn't sit properly in my hands so we went for a different set.

Greentrilby · 01/03/2025 10:53

And another vote for Robert Welch Radford. They do sporks which are our most used item in the cutlery drawer.

DuesToTheDirt · 01/03/2025 11:01

We have the Radford too. I agree about holding some if you can to try out.

HelpMeGetThrough · 01/03/2025 11:07

Tesco's, 16 quid. Sorted!

BaronessBomburst · 01/03/2025 11:12

Only buy a set which also has the option to buy individual pieces, so for example you can get extra teaspoons, and also check how long it has been available for and how long they guarantee availability.
I learnt the hard way.

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 01/03/2025 11:32

If you want a set to just have forever, I'd pick the Arthur Price classic Rattail set, because if you lose the teaspoons or want to add steak knives in 6 years time you will be able to and they will be identical.
They won't be making the Sophie Conran Rivelin set forever.

I have had an Arthur Price set for a long time.
Mine is Harley not Rattail, but both are classic patterns you will always be able to get.

Over time I've ended up with all sorts of additions to my original basic set, including picking up a few extra places settings, and I've had to replace the odd fork that somehow disappeared during a house move.
I also picked up an extra set of teaspoons as we go through a lot.

On the Arthur Price website under sample service, you can pick a set of 5 different styles of teaspoon from their range for £5 + postage (you get one of each style you have picked), so you can see what you think and compare them.

I tend to wait until November to buy extra bits from their site, as they have a big sale on everything for the whole month every year.

Floralnomad · 01/03/2025 11:42

Of the original 3 I’ve picked the JL set . I’ve just bought a Bliss set in the Range for £20 , it’s stainless steel and plain which is how we like our cutlery . The link to it is from Amazon where it’s more expensive

Can you get to a JL and try them for weight and see which you prefer? That's what I did when we were choosing.

ERthree · 01/03/2025 11:51

You need to be able to hold it before you buy it. Skinny lightweight cutlery is awful.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 01/03/2025 11:56

I have this slightly different version of the Arthur Price ones. Same shape, but dimpled handles. They are lovely and weighty and very tactile. I also have a second set in gold.

parrotpancake · 01/03/2025 12:09

We have had the Sophie Conran ones since 2010 and are very happy with them

My BIL thinks the forks are too narrow but we like them and no one else has ever complained ...

Bigwelshlamb · 01/03/2025 12:14

Rattail... Classic and easy to replace...

thegirlwithemousyhair · 01/03/2025 12:41

Oh look, now you've got me looking at the pies ad 😂
