This is what people have generally

https://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/15988666/eurohike-mobile-mains-kit-15m-15988666

You can get some with USB sockets too for a few more quid or on a reel which keeps it tidy when packed (but make sure the whole length is un-reeled when in use).

Search for EHU cable and you want one side with the circle large blue plug for going in to the hook up then the other side with normal plugs on.

You don’t need electricity just a couple of power packs to charge phones up

This is great, thank you !
So the whole cable is waterproof ?

What for?!? If you’ve got a couple of large power packs to charge phones, that’s all you need, surely?

TickingAlongNicely · 28/02/2025 07:07

We use the electricity for the fridge, the pump for the paddleboard and phones. Sometimes the laptop as well.

We have a solar set up not EHU though.

Wouldn't camp without it.

AuntieBsBramble · 28/02/2025 07:10

I'm curious too. What are you plugging in? We've never used electric hook up. I can't think what we'd want.

TickingAlongNicely · 28/02/2025 07:11

I've also known people to use hotplates and slow cookers on EHU.

(We use the pump to inflate the Airbeams as well!)

Autumn1990 · 28/02/2025 07:11

I have seen people camping with a microwave, electric kettle, heater and various other bits and bobs. I have a few power packs for phones and lights and a gas stove. May as well get a caravan if you want the usual kitchen appliances. If you take electrical stuff you need a table or something to use the microwave and kettle on.
personally I take as little stuff as possible

Some people need to plug in medical equipment to stay alive whilst camping

There's no one right way to camp

Marmite27 · 28/02/2025 07:13

We use our EHU for a fan heater, fridge, kettle, toaster, slow cooker and airfryer.

Plus charging phones and kindles.

AuntieBsBramble · 28/02/2025 07:16

Ah - we use inflator from car for air beds. Manual pump for paddle boards. Cool box for food - you can freeze blocks in most campsites - but if very warm we buy ice daily. Don't take a laptop.

Camping is a lot of faff though. I can understand wanting to make it easy.

Fooshufflewickjbannanapants · 28/02/2025 07:16

You folks really can't think of things that might need electricity?! We use hook up or solar set up, fridge for medication, charge for wheelchair, power for equipment......

ThatThisThatYou · 28/02/2025 07:19

An electric kettle is a godsend when camping. I’m #TeamElectric.

Wine chills better in an actual camping fridge.

Sorry - I missed where it said that was needed in the OP 😵‍💫

obviously there are certain situations where electricity is literally life-saving but I think most people are thinking about the fact that you can cook on gas, use cool boxes to keep food chilled, etc.

eyeeyeeyeeyeeye · 28/02/2025 07:37

We need a kettle, can't go without my morning coffee when I literally just wake up! Power banks won't go far, family of 5!
Thinking of taking the air fryer 😆
Fridge etc

I mean, great for those who can go without, but I'm not !

Flamingmentalcats · 28/02/2025 07:38

Definitely go EHU, like pp said, a kettle is a game changer, and a toaster. Just make sure you get camping specific so you don't blow the electrics. Check the ampage of your site. It might mean you can't have the kettle and toaster on at the same time etc. some sites have 16 amps, some might only have 10.
And like someone else said, please make sure you unravel the cable fully or you are at risk of it setting on fire!
Have fun, we used to love camping when our daughter was young

Doggymummar · 28/02/2025 07:39

I've never heard of camping with electricity. I'm 55 and thought I hated camping, not been since I was about 10 but we were doing it wrong, no air beds, radio kettle etc. we just had a tent and a sleeping bag clothes for a pillow. We had a washing up bowl to get washed in and that was it. It sounds pretty fun now with all mod cons.

Edited

You can but why should you when you can use electricity. Life is not a race to the bottom to see how hard it can be even when you are camping.

Classic "I don't use it, so can't fathom other people doing so!".
OP asked what she needs for electricity, not what she needs electricity for.

I don't know, this one is fascinating me.
It's bringing up what does camping mean / look like to you?
My vision is very much more an off grid experience but I'm loving hearing about everyone's different ways.
It had never occurred to me that you folks use a hook up with a caravan.
