I’m a really basic camper, mostly because I have a tiny car but also because I enjoy the simplicity of it. On a trip last year though, the people who pitched up next to me had:
An air tent for sleeping
Inflatable sofa plus outdoor chairs and table
Fire pit
Double height airbed with duvet, pillows and cushions
A kitchen tent with cupboards, huge cool box, table and chairs with tablecloth and placemats, electric kettle, bbq and hot plate
A shower/toilet tent
It was like watching a magician pulling handkerchiefs out of his sleeve when they got it all out of their enormous SUV and top box!

Our camping varies from just stuff that can fit in the canoe (being dropped off then picked up the next day down river) to a full trailer, multiple tents with fridge etc. Plus Scout camps in the middle (at least a week long in the summer).

It completely depends on where we ate going and why.

I love camping (am in my 60s) and make no apology for always booking an electric hook up pitch.

Being able to boil water quickly for tea in the morning and a hot water bottle at night is non-negotiable for me. We cook fabulous meals on an induction hob and have even been known to take our air fryer.

Camping for me means being outdoors, light evenings, drinking wine, laughing a lot, day time exploring - all of it. If I'm not doing it properly' in some people's eyes well I guess I'll just have to come to terms with that as best I can. Smile

We always take on when we go camping abroad.
Not in the UK.

We use it when we hire a fridge on European campsites. And to power laptops and the phones. And hairdryer.

We also take an electric Teryaki hot plate which was so useful.

I have seen people take a lot of electric stuff when camping abroad.

But UK - we can survive without it for a few days.

But each to their own.

Check out the MN Camping Board!

(I avoid sites that even have EHU pitches in case the TV watching lot are in residence. I like no amplified music allowed on site, a small stove for my morning coffee, and usually we cook over our camp fire. Everyone finds their camping style and enjoys it)

We're very much in the middle with this.

We've never used EHU (to the advantage of those who need to/want to since we aren't taking up a EHU pitch). We prefer to camp where people use less electronic entertainment. I can spend the other 50 weeks of the year being entertained by the TV, I like 2 weeks away from it all. We're all different.

We do however use a leisure battery which we charge with a solar panel for lighting and phone charging.

I must admit I struggle to see the advantage of an electric kettle. 😂 Is it much easier to flip the switch on an electric kettle than to turn the knob on a gas stove? What am I missing?

Speed. Plus it is amazing when on the Scottish Highlands and the wind is coming from all directions slowing down the kettle on the gas stove.

Oh, OK. My aluminium camp kettle on a camping gas stove is extremely quick - substantially quicker at boiling water than any electric kettle we've had at home but I guess it might depend on what people are using to boil water in when they're camping. We put the camping stove inside the open porch of the tent out of the wind because yes, trying to cook on a gas stove in the wind is a thankless task. It's pretty windy in our favourite campsite but it does come fairly reliably from the southwest.

Iheartmysmart · 28/02/2025 11:48

I use a stove top kettle at home on my gas hob so don’t really notice any difference in boiling time when camping.

But I think one of the really nice things about it is there is no right or wrong way to camp. Some people want to get away from tech and have a back to basics experience while others like all their mod cons. As long as everyone has a good time then does it matter.

We are glamping a few nights this summer as Ds wants to camp.

the tents have proper beds, a wooden hot tub, private bathrooms and showers in the safari type tents, electric. And an on site Michelin star restaurant… it’s a tent, that’s camping imo.

Its definitely camping with electric
