FFS! I just can't....Ever had anything like this happen? I don't know what to title it!

As part of my job I help new companies on startup.

I wrote to a graphic design company, explaining what a company did and asking them to design me a logo-I told them the company name and purpose and gave an example that I quite liked but added 'A little more professional looking, the writing 'gets lost' a little in this one'.

They agreed they'd come up with a few designs and I could choose one which they'd then format and send to me.

Today they've sent their proposed designs back. 6 altogether.

Every.Single.One has the company name and then 'Gets Lost' written underneath it.

In fairness in very prominent letters that certainly stand out.

AI generated

Fiver for sure or very cheap design - get what you pay for! No serious creative professional is going to bash out 6 logos for £x.

This reminds me of those funny cake fails!

Love the NOTHING one, it’s kinda profound! 😂

SnakesandKnives · 27/02/2025 19:16

AI image generators are generally a bit shit at text still

if that’s actually clear and spelt right on the all the options then it was probably a real person. Who isn’t super bright!

the Brenda obituary made me cry with laughter - I’m sure not real but genius regardless!

Dear oh dear! Crying with laughter. Never seen those before! Really needed a laugh today. Thank you.

OP, I hope they don’t charge you a penny. You’re quite right. What right-thinking person would ever think a company wants ‘gets lost’ as a logo strapline?

All those episodes of Tomorrow’s World where we were shown the latest advancements in technology that would lead to none of us having to work by about 2000. Juxtaposed with the mundane reality of AI.

Yeah, I think it’s groovy. Is it in the Nihilist Birthdays section 😂?

AfricanGreen · 27/02/2025 19:24

It's because companies outsource jobs to designers on the web, who will do a logo design for peanuts compared to UK costs.
My ex husband used to do it- post a job he wanted doing on a global graphic designer site. Designers from different countries would then bid for the job by stating what they would charge for it. So someone from London might charge £800 but a designer based in India would do it for a tenner.

Your job was completed by someone who doesn't understand English, but you paid English prices to a firm who couldn't be arsed to check the work properly.

ExitPursuedByABare · 27/02/2025 19:33

This makes me sad. Back in the 80s when I worked in Advertising and PR, designers were shit hot and could produce fabulous work out of the most meagre briefs.

WestwardHo1 · 27/02/2025 19:45

Crazybaby123 · 27/02/2025 17:14

Did you use Fivr OP😂
I once sent a design for a birthdayinvite to a low rent design and print company and they changed 'you know you want to come' to 'you know you want to CUM'. And delivered me 150 invites to my door with this on.
I feel your pain.

Oh my God 😳😂😂😂

JustSawJohnny · 27/02/2025 19:50

That is hilarious 😂

My Mum has a double barrel surname. Once, she read her name out on the phone to a large mobile phone operator as 'first name, second name 1, HYPHEN, second name 2' (eg Helena Bonham-Carter).

When the bill arrived it was addressed to eg 'Helena Bonham IPHONE Carter'

Much hilarity ensued when she called them to change the account details and let them know her middle name was actually Sheila.

They still are if you commission an actual creative agency. Rather than Moonpig! I've never 'paid upfront for six designs'. And then questioned if they'll charge for amends? Especially without talking through the concept, nailing a brief, getting a quote (including several rounds of amends). I hope the 'start-up' client reads here and realises they are wasting their time and money. Sorry if that sounds abrupt. But it's things like this - where everyone's a designer, everyone's a writer - that really insult people who've invested a great deal of time and work in honing skill. Only to be lumped in with some sort of AI generator. The OP exercised zero discernment and is clearly not suited to briefing creatives

Why outsource for peanuts when you can produce equally awful stuff at home with ChatGBT?

whatonearthisgoingonnow · 27/02/2025 15:32

You went with an Indian company trying to get something on the cheap, this is what happens.

By the way it will be logo designs that are already in use with other companies, either stolen/copied or mass sold to loads.

They are good companies to use if you have a strict brief and want to copy an existing design for something, useless if you want anything original or modified, as you've found out.

Edited

Always one racist here to spoil a good thread 🙄

ScottBakula · 27/02/2025 20:30

SofaSpuds · 27/02/2025 17:03

Where did op day she went with an Indian company trying to get something cheaply???

And that the company she used infringed copyright laws .
And Indians can not create good graphic designs

I hope that @whatonearthisgoingonnow isn't a graphic designer, copier, editor or writer as they just seem to make up what ever they want

VikingsandDragons · 27/02/2025 20:52

Was it on Fiverr by any chance? I'm a graphic designer and UK based, English as a first language, I think I'm reasonable in that I charge £45 for an hour's work and can usually provide 4-6 logo options in that time.... but often new businesses of the self employed variety default to Fiverr where people can get a dozen options for £3.66 (even if the quality is nothing like the lovely shiny options you see before you buy!). UK designers can't compete with designers from places with a lower cost of living unfortunately.

Ghosttofu99 · 27/02/2025 21:13

To get real design work you need to pay real prices (not saying you haven’t in this instance but the majority of people don’t do this.) What did they charge you for 6 designs and is it a local company or freelancer?

Lots of people go on a website like Freelancer and pay in rupees etc for design work that could take hours/days if done to a professional standard. Unsurprisingly they get clip art or now AI. Even more depressingly, most people commissioning art/design work don’t even notice the work is bad.

Reminds me of this bit, only not as funny https://27bslash6.com/missy.html

Is it possible they're joking, however inappropriately? It doesn't sound professional, AI or not.

Omg thank you so so much for that link! I think I stopped breathing at the part with the orange cat 🤣

No, I'm someone who works in that space and know exactly what it's like after having bosses hire exactly those kinds of companies and getting exactly those kinds of results for 20+ years.

I am liberal, middle eastern myself and couldn't be more pro immigration and pro hiring diversely (more so than anyone I know), this is just an unfortunate fact based on being very familiar with this particular area.

This reads exactly Donald Trump delivering a speech! Never really thought about why he sounds like that but he's clearly using AI to write his speeches.

Ditto - completely unfathomable. The worse part was that DP had actually written several chunks of the website so the designer had seen the word written down. Yet still decided to change it to Jean in other places. Bonkers.

Wonder who this Jean woman is who has a heavy involvement in a project she knows nothing about 😅

I am loving these examples! Classic!

To answer some questions/responses-my work have a policy/alliance with a number of companies or individual designers or other professionals-I have a list of these that I can choose from when (as is part of my job) i am helping a new company set up. It's not anything to do with my how we make the payment or when, that's a company decision and I assume they get some sort of discount for doing this but I don't know, that isn't anything to do with me.

This particular designer is in another country, but to work with us any company has to be fluent in english. I think this one's told a few pork pies here.

Some time ago, the company did make a decision to push to provide work for some smaller or sole trade companies rather than use the huge ones. I felt at the time that this was a nice, ethical idea. I am now wondering if this is the downside of such a decision!

😂😅It's literally my job, that I've been doing for years with very few misdemeanors or mistakes from the companies used.

I can't choose to not pay upfront, the company I work for chose the contract, not me, I just liaise with customers about what they want.

It is in the process of being sorted out, thankfully! I will update.
