Legendary Hollywood star Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa have been found dead in their Santa Fe home.
The couple, who had been married since 1991, were found alongside their dog. Local media has reported that no foul play is suspected.
Hackman had just turned 95 in late January. He was known for being a reclusive person, having not starred in a movie since 2004, when he played Monroe 'Eagle' Cole in the political satire Welcome to Mooseport.
Born in California on January 30 1930, the actor had enlisted in the army after lying about his age at 16, serving for four-and-a-half years.
After moving back to California following his military service, he decided to pursue acting after briefly living in New York.
RIP

Superb actor.

He will always be my favourite Lex Luther. Just brilliant.

Those of you who came in here to say 'oh I don't know who he is' or similar...why be so disrespectful?

TheWorminLabyrinth · 27/02/2025 15:25

Sky News now reporting that Gene's daughter has told TMZ that they believe cause of death to be from carbon monoxide poisoning. How sad.

HolidayBrochure · 27/02/2025 08:38

If there's no foul play could it be something like carbon monoxide poisoning?

I pray it's this rather than the rumours that she passed away and she was the carer for her husband. Very sad.

Butterfly292828 · 27/02/2025 15:53

Because he was a huge actor in his day, plus very unusual circumstances to be found dead.

Sad news but why is it dominating every news site?

As with the Liam Payne story, it's disproportionate coverage - these are somewhat obscure celebrities. Or is that callous?

Deliberately goady.
My 16 year old knows who Gene Hackman is and would never describe him as an “obscure celebrity”!
🤬

I've never heard of a dog being overcome by CM poisoning.
Dogs have senses far superior to humans.

Edited

Carbon monoxide accumulates from the floor up. Dogs are shorter than humans so are within the accumulation layer for longer than humans and so are more likely to succumb, not less.

Wanted to know if I was the only one. Maybe I need to be 50+ to know who he is, it seems like he hasn't been in much in the last 25 years.

My 16 year old knows fine well who he is.

Not true at all.

Quire sad none of my colleagues who are late 20s early 30s have heard of him despite 5 oscars

My 16 year old knows fine well who he is!
Mind you, he was aghast that no one in his class knew who David Bowie was.

Chuchoter · 27/02/2025 16:03

The actor and his wife's bodies were found in separate rooms of their Santa Fe home, The New York Timesreported.
One of their three dogs was found dead inside a kennel, according to Sheriff Adan Mendoza.
Two other dogs survived.

The ignorance of some people on this thread reminds me of when David Bowie died and one of my colleagues said she'd never heard of him. She was in her 50s at the time of his death.
Maybe people need to stop watching vacuous shit like Love Island and Made in Chelsea and actually watch some classic films.

My son was 8 at the time and shocked that no one in his class knew who it was. He was in bits.

i saw that this morning from The sun, but it was in inverted commas

The inverted commas are either a direct quote from someone or they are using it as 'alleged' rather than a fact.

nope

One dog was in their kennel we know now so that probably blows the CM theory out of the water.

tobee · 27/02/2025 16:29

One of my favourite actors.

The best thing I ever saw him in was I Never Sang For My Father with, star of Hollywood's golden age, Melvyn Douglas.

HelenWheels · 27/02/2025 16:32

surely the kennel is in the garden though

This is still showing up under the Google search, and has all morning. The Sun isn't always the most reliable news agency, but I doubt they'd make it up entirely. I suspect they know something that isn't being discussed yet.

I just hope that if it was suicide, it was actually suicide. And not murder/suicide. 95 or not it takes very little for a man to hold a gun and take out the "things" he feels belong to him. He wouldn't be the first man who decided if he was going to die his wife wouldn't be allowed to continue living.

Such distasteful and unwarranted speculation.

MyrtleLion · 27/02/2025 16:44

I knew a man who died of carbon monoxide poisoning. When the police found him they also found his dog. They literally said that the minute they saw the dog they knew it was almost certainly carbon monoxide. So when I read about Gene Hackman, and that his wife and dog had died, that's immediately what I thought.

HelenWheels · 27/02/2025 16:44

this is such a negative side of 24 hour rolling news.

I don't mind movie ignorance, some people are just not interested. What gets me though is reveling in it and coming here to announce Gene Hackman was an obscure celebrity known only to people over 50.

It's the smugness for me, but it's also the sheer ignorance and cheap ageism in one smug shot.
Breathtaking really.

Your son has excellent taste! ❤️

I have a feeling that the kennel reference means the dog was crated indoor of a night.

From the Daily Mail (yes, I know I know! I came across it on a non-DM page). Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa were found mummified at mansion with pills strewn in bathroom | Daily Mail Online

"Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa were found partially-mummified at the couple's $3.3 million mansion, with pills strewn in their bathroom.
An arrest warrant obtained by DailyMail.com revealed Arakawa, 64, was found decomposed with bloating on her face and mummification in her hands and feet.
Sheriffs said Hackman was found to have the same signs of decomposition as his wife.

Two maintenance workers called Roland Lowe Begay and Jesse Kesler discovered the bodies of Arakawa and her retired Hollywood star husband at their luxurious million Santa Fe mansion Wednesday at 1:46pm Mountain Time.
Begay and Kesler told investigators they hadn't seen them for two weeks.
Both appear to have been dead for some time.
Arakawa was discovered lying on the bathroom floor of the couple's home, with an open prescription bottle of pills scattered across a nearby countertop.
No indication has been given as to what the pills were and whether they had been prescribed to Hackman or his wife.
A space heater was found next to Arakawa's head, which investigators believe may have fallen.
Hackman was found dead in a mud room off the couple's kitchen, the warrant said.

The Oscar-winning Superman star was fully clothed. His sunglasses were found next to his body, suggesting he may have died of a sudden fall.
There were no signs of a gas leak.
Hackman's daughter Elizabeth had speculated earlier on Thursday that her father and stepmother may have been killed by a carbon monoxide leak.
One of the couple's three dogs, a German Shepherd, was found dead about 10 to 15 feet away from Betsy in a closet just off the bathroom.
Earlier reports had suggested the animal was found dead in a kennel. The couple's two other dogs were unharmed.
One of the surviving dogs was found alive close to Betsy's body, with a second roaming the property.
The couple's front door was open and there were no signs of forced entry.
Santa Fe Sheriff's Department has said there is no suggestion of foul play but that an investigation is ongoing.
Developing story, check back for updates."
