How does someone on a supermarket salary obtain so much in savings?

YourPoisedFinch · 22/02/2025 12:53

I have £20,000 in savings, £15,000 currently in an ISA and I have around £72,000 tied up in stocks and shares etc..... how did you obtain all this on a supermarket job?

OP posts:

No avocado toast or Costa coffees?

BewaretheJabberwock · 22/02/2025 13:31

Maybe they found the money on the Post Office steps?

Port1aCastis · 22/02/2025 13:33

How did you do it OP? Plus if I was you I wouldn't be bragging about how much money you have ( or have not) as it's not safe and poor etiquette. My Grandmother always said talking about money was crass so I'll refrain from posting details of my accounts

What's a 'supermarket salary' though?

If you wanted to get technical, I work in a call centre. So I could say that I have a call centre job. However, there are people in this centre earning £25k and others on £100k plus.

I have a friend who works in a supermarket and she's earning £60k 🤷‍♀️. I mean obviously she's not sitting on a till for 40 hours a week but she's still present, a supermarket worker on the shop floor for some time etc.

Could you check your body for any tattoos that might explain it?

Friend of mine does actually work stacking shelves in Tesco and has managed to buy 2x BTL properties. As rents increase and property values increase I’m sure she’ll soon be able to free up some money for a 3rd, then a 4th.

Name changed for this. I find this a rather peculiar thread . Are you speaking about yourself or someone you know ?
If it's you , then is this a brag or are you jealous of a friend .?
I changed name to to say that some of us might have money not because of savings , decent professions etc but because of inheritance or compensation due to accidents or medical reasons .

FriendlyEeyore · 22/02/2025 13:55

They put the money in savings and invested the rest. It’s irrelevant how much they earn - it’s how much they save and invest.

SunnyViper · 22/02/2025 13:57

What an odd post

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 22/02/2025 13:58

ashamedtramp · 22/02/2025 14:02

i suppose it depends on what job you actually do in the supermarket? are you a shift stacker working nights as a 2nd income or are you a CEO?

my DD(23) has amased savings, by SAVING! i inherited mine?

It is beyond peculiar. I'd just not bother with it to be honest.

Unless you are any good at poetry?

DougalsBlueJumper · 22/02/2025 14:05

Gawd. It's not one of those bastard boomer posts is it? There have been a few of those recently. Your mum perhaps? She needs to hand over your inheritance RIGHT NOW. You need to get on the property ladder. That sort of thing?

Well how did you?

MolkosTeenageAngst · 22/02/2025 14:22

There is not enough information here. How long have you been working in the supermarket job? Are we talking a year or 50 years? Have you ever had a different, better paying job? What are your outgoings? Do you live alone or with parents or a spouse, do they provide for you? Have you inherited property or money? Do you have a job on the side? Have you ever had any windfalls, for example lottery, premium bond or gambling wins? Have any of your investments/ stocks/ shares
led to large gains? Do you have other forms of income such as a side business?

Obviously there are lots of ways a person working in a supermarket could end up with over £100,000. Inheritance is an obvious one. A lottery win another. Good investments a third (eg: I have a friend who was an early buyer of bitcoin and made a huge return). If the person has minimal outgoings because they live with parents and does a lot of overtime and saves most of their salary they could easily save that amount in 5-6 years. If the person is in their 60s and has saved well due to low outgoings/ no dependents etc they could easily have amounted that over several decades.

You seem to have a problem with people on lower incomes having more than you.

Perhaps you need to consider less with envy of other people and more about what you can do to improve your own life ? For some people this will be maximising their income, for others it will be reducing their outgoings where they can so they can prioritise the things that are important to them. Forget other people. Concentrate on improving your own life to meet your individual needs. And if you need help, then ask for it, rather than keep posting threads knocking other people .

OP isn't saying she has this money herself, she's just written it badly. Similar post yesterday about people living above their perceived income.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 22/02/2025 14:30

I work in a supermarket. I also have a good deal of money in savings because retail work isn't my main job. I'm an author and I sell a large number of books. My royalties every month are far higher than my supermarket earnings, but I keep working there because otherwise I'd be sitting at home alone all day every day, talking to people who don't exist.

YourAzureEagle · 22/02/2025 14:31

Its not really a lot of money if you have been working a good length of time and been able to save by virtue of low outgoings, either frugal lifestyle or living at home.

I'm 45, never earned more than 23K I think in a given year, got £150K savings from that, but I lived at home until I was 40 caring for my dad, my outgoings were very low, no holidays for years etc..

It soon mounts up over that period.
