What's one thing you've seen in other countries that you wish we had here?

In my home country, we have riders on motorbikes whose job it is to transport things from one place to another.
For example, if you left your charger at your mums, you could just request one of those and they would bring it straight to you.
Mind you in that country taxis are a lot cheaper than they are over here, so even if we had something like this here it would probably be too expensive and not worth it.

In Belgium they have those little green lights that show you where there are spaces in a multi storey car park (and red lights when the spaces are taken). Saves you driving round and round looking for a space. Maybe they have them in the UK but I've never seen them.

They have this at the Broadmarsh in Nottingham

The death penalty.

The right to bear arms.

Big built police MEN that are a visible presence and are armed.

Plenty of countries have the death penalty. Some of the very countries being extolled on here. Perhaps you could move to one?

Japan - hand basins where the grey water fills the toilet cistern. Complete no brainer for saving water.

Hmmm I don’t know. Why do YOU think?🤔

Mmm, tricky. Is it because everyone is lovely, and it's a utopian society with no needs, therefore no crime?.

halfwindow · 22/02/2025 14:36

Also, the system of applying to university here seems really over-complicated. Why all this business with predicted grades, offers, getting the grades (or not), and clearing? I think in lots of other countries you do the exams and then apply with grades in hand - it would make the system a lot more straightforward, and less stressful.

Genuinely ripe peaches and nectarines. And tomatoes that actually taste of something!

M&S food hall will do that for you.

A decent economy that’s not in a permanent state of managed decline.

That's what I call anything above 35 C, which it gets to in our top floor bedroom regularly in summer

We live on the coast near Newcastle- I consider 21C balmy and 23C unbearable. Pale, freckly and can't stand heat.

@Eight8eight The Metrocentre does have solar panels above the car parks. So does Gateshead Council's car park and I've seen others here in hte north east of England.

Just has hardly any shops left.

You know how greenhouses and conservatories get hot because of the sun through the windows?

The same thing happens with rooms in direct sunlight. Our living room gets very balmy in spring as there's direct sunlight onto the window

Agreed. Our bay window, when it catches the sun on an afternoon, can raise the inside temperature from 22 C to over 30 C in less than three hours. And because we're insulated to the rafters it doesn't cool down at night unless you leave windows wide open... but then nefarious people try to climb in at night to rob you.

It's also worth pointing out that external shutters really require inward-opening windows which are as rare as rocking-horse shit here.

I'd say that when it comes to residential dwellings here we can learn so much from, say, the PassivHaus standard in Germany. But no, we're determined to live in Victorian housing stock and then moan about energy bills.

I thought Vancouver had a serious and visible drug problem though?

But it's not as a result of having clean streets.

The roadside conveyor belts/ travelators for cyclists on steep hills

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 22/02/2025 14:45

As a nation we have to decide what we want the most. 'Austerity' caused many of the issues we're living with now. I'd love the streets to be cleaned but my local council takes delight in keeping the council tax rises low, I'd definitely pay more for better services.
We allowed privatisation of childcare, adult care, school transport etc etc and wonder why it costs so much! Most countries with good transport systems are publicly owned therefore not driven by profits. We get what we're prepared to accept

a taxi driver comes round with a bottle of champagne and pizza or whatever you want and it doesn't cost much.

olive trees.

men who speak English with a foreign accent.

We have your first and third option here though ? Do you not have uber eats where you live ? Can get your groceries too.

In China, early retirement so grandparents can then do childcare for grandchildren, supporting business, creating family bonds and helping young families achieve financial stability.

Brilliant system, everyone wins. Children. Parents. Grandparents.

The option of retirement would be great, but why should people expect to spend their 50s/60s doing child care rather than continuing their careers or travelling/enjoying their hobbies?

There are plenty of countries which have better subsidised child care than here.

LuluBlakey1 · 22/02/2025 14:53

A population that:
Works for their living and contributes to society
Cares about the environment and does not drop litter
Maintains their houses and gardens nicely
Accepts that as well as having rights, they have responsibilities

The death penalty.
The right to bear arms.

Look at the US - these measures don’t prevent crime. They support it. Part of the reason Americans have so much trouble with gun crime is down to their right to bear arms. And the death penalty does Noe’s absolutely nothing to deter criminals.

Nice trains that are comfortable, reasonably priced and run efficiently.

Definitely this!

I was unsurprised that trains in france and Italy were nicer, more frequent and more reliable than in the UK but I was bloody gobsmacked to take a 3rd class train in Thailand for 45p and find it more pleasant than a UK train going half the distance for more than twenty times the cost!

Your adult life as a parent is mostly work. You are at work while your parents do the majority of the childcare. And then you reverse that for your grandchildren.

As I said, family is everything. It isn't seen as a requirement. It's what people want to do. Grandchildren adore their grandparents and vice versa.

And because they retire early, there is life post-grandchildren too! Dancing aunties. Street dancing. It's a lovely culture.

Several generations in China will barely have any aunties or uncles at all - dancing or otherwise.
