What's one thing you've seen in other countries that you wish we had here?

In my home country, we have riders on motorbikes whose job it is to transport things from one place to another.
For example, if you left your charger at your mums, you could just request one of those and they would bring it straight to you.
Mind you in that country taxis are a lot cheaper than they are over here, so even if we had something like this here it would probably be too expensive and not worth it.

Is there some sort of expectation to do this as that sounds awful. Imagine knowing your adult life is just childcare > work > more childcare 😱

Your adult life as a parent is mostly work. You are at work while your parents do the majority of the childcare. And then you reverse that for your grandchildren.

As I said, family is everything. It isn't seen as a requirement. It's what people want to do. Grandchildren adore their grandparents and vice versa.

And because they retire early, there is life post-grandchildren too! Dancing aunties. Street dancing. It's a lovely culture.

Nightlife that isn't all about drinking and partying. In Asian countries I loved being able just to pop out to the shops at 9pm, stroll around night food markets, safe for kids too

Doesn't sound so great for retail staff.

The ability to go for a run, or walk around safely at 3 am like I can when I go to the UAE.

We'll just forget about everything else then, shall we?

a warm reliable summer.

Honestly I would settle for sprung at this point just how many years has it been cold and wet for

AviationGeek · 22/02/2025 14:06

They used to have a lot of 'dollar movie theatres' in the USA. It's 30yrs since I was there but they showed older films and tickets were $1. It was a great way to catch something you'd missed when it was first released and a super cheap afternoon or evening out. I still think it's a great idea 😁

What do you mean by properly seasoned? Spicy? If you mean salt and pepper, then it's better for each person do it to their taste, surely?

Food is actually cheap in the UK compared to some countries with similar standard of living.

I do not mean salt and pepper; that proves my point. 😀

The food available in restaurants and cafes is dire, IMHO. Not what is available in supermarkets, but what is done to it. Just my opinion. Would take too long to explain further.

I can't remember which country I've seen them in, might have been Spain or Portugal but fruit trees lining the roads.

You get hungry on your commute to work? Just pluck an orange from a tree, or an apple or a pear.

We live in Victorian street lined with quince trees. They are on the junction corners of several roads. If they don't get picked, you really know it if one falls. UK and there are also plum trees one street up - if they aren't picked they smell and if they fall they are very slippy

How strange? What's the temperature outside when it's 35 inside your house?

You know how greenhouses and conservatories get hot because of the sun through the windows?

The same thing happens with rooms in direct sunlight. Our living room gets very balmy in spring as there's direct sunlight onto the window

In Belgium they have those little green lights that show you where there are spaces in a multi storey car park (and red lights when the spaces are taken). Saves you driving round and round looking for a space. Maybe they have them in the UK but I've never seen them.

They have this in some car parks in the UK- it’s very handy!

Clean, reliable trains with enough carriages that run on time.

Oh yes, this!!! And we are rare in our crap trains. Spain, Switzerland, China all have fab trains.

That was my wish also!
But nice large ones, basically a large enclosed green space within a bigger park. Perfect for both dog owners and non dog owners, especially for children. Keeps the rest of the park clean and safe.

We have LOTS of dog parks here in the NW

People that can have a laugh and joke banter without everyone getting offended or finding offense in every thing.
Oh wait thats everywhere.
People are just not fun anymore.

That just depends on whether the banter is offensive, damaging and hurtful. Why should people have to put up with it? Do you want to live in the 1970s?

A border force.

Apparently we do have one, but they actively ferry unknowns to us instead of keeping them out. Quite the opposite of what a border force is paid to actually do.

Really really good trash collection. Twice a week. I think of it often.

Yes. The system I had in the UK was awful and really discriminated against people in flats. Mixed waste was only taken once every two weeks. Terrible.

Hdjdb42 · 22/02/2025 14:09

Bidets, I think they're great.

YourHappyJadeEagle · 22/02/2025 14:10

Sun.
A fast, efficient state health service.
Clean rivers and beaches
Weekly markets full of fresh produce grown by the seller.
Oh how I wish I’d stayed.

All rich countries have undocumented migrants and asylum seekers.

I'd like coffee shops to stay open late.

Shifts are a thing. FWIW I'd far prefer working retail or hospitality in Asia to the UK, much less aggro and theft.

I wouldn't have wanted my mother in law to have been my child's childminder (my own mother wasn't alive to have been able to nor was she local enough even if she had been).

It sounds very insular with a pressure to give birth while your own parents are still fit enough to be childminders. I have Chinese relatives - all have left China now and live on separate continents so clearly wasn't a pattern they worked hard to continue.

It's a totally family orientated country. That opinion would be rare and seen as very alien and Westernised.

Well, China is not exactly renowned for encouraging individualism.
