What's one thing you've seen in other countries that you wish we had here?

In my home country, we have riders on motorbikes whose job it is to transport things from one place to another.
For example, if you left your charger at your mums, you could just request one of those and they would bring it straight to you.
Mind you in that country taxis are a lot cheaper than they are over here, so even if we had something like this here it would probably be too expensive and not worth it.

I've thought of another one. When I was in Spain last year there were no individual waste bins per household but the communal waste bins were emptied twice a day.

Decent homes - rent or buying - affordable at an average salary.

Isn't right to roam (bar few logical exceptions) across Europe?
The difference did baffle me in UK at first...

No, it is pretty unique. As far as I know it’s only Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland and Scotland. But it only works if everyone takes responsibility.

NotVWoolf · 23/02/2025 18:48

An easier house selling and buying system - like Scotland, where (as far as I know) an offer is legally binding.

I will add Switzerland and Czechia as well.
Germany doesn't have it? I always thpugh they did

StarkleLittleTwink · 23/02/2025 18:50

Decent, state-funded public transport like in Germany, Holland, France and Switzerland.

In Belgium they have those little green lights that show you where there are spaces in a multi storey car park (and red lights when the spaces are taken). Saves you driving round and round looking for a space. Maybe they have them in the UK but I've never seen them.

They've got them in gunwharf keys in Portsmouth

I honestly don’t know? And there may be differences in what you are allowed to do. I pretty much assumed it was like this everywhere, until I was an adult. The right to pick mushrooms, berries and to go fishing anywhere. Or put up a tent.

But then again I also assumed not leaving rubbish or not leaving things as they were when you arrived a given.

Hammams

In Spain, apartment buildings are built around a central space that goes right up through the middle and that's where people hang out their washing - lines are on a pulley so you can access the entire line from your window

NormasArse · 23/02/2025 19:13

Proper bike lanes.

Jobdilemmaz · 23/02/2025 19:13

Sunshine!

NormasArse · 23/02/2025 19:14

A really efficient train service, like Stockholm.

suburberphobe · 23/02/2025 19:24

And the criminal classes not being bag-snatchers but international crime gangs money laundering ?

Living in Dubai yes. My country has extradited quite a few who were major importers of cocaine into Europe going on the run there.

Boysgrownbutstillathome · 23/02/2025 19:27

When we went to Malta we loved the "pea cakes" you could buy very cheaply from bakeries. I've never seen them anywhere else.

JustMeAndTheFish · 23/02/2025 19:27

In Prague the trees have little number plates on so that if there’s any kind of emergency you can just tell the emergency services the number on the nearest tree and they can locate you.

DuchessofSuffolk · 23/02/2025 19:28

The American school bus service looks good to me! I don’t know the ins and outs, but from what I gather bus picks kid up from outside their house and then drops them home outside their house at end of day. Would possibly make things easier for working parents.

A French lady I work with told me they get 2 hour lunch breaks and that they subsidise lunches; so basically they give you a voucher to a local cafe, everyday. I would be the size of a house tho, so probs best not.

Annie1919 · 23/02/2025 19:36

In my parent's Spanish kitchen, there was a cabinet (with no bottom) above the kitchen sink that hid a double-story drying rack for crockery and pans etc after washing-up. It meant washing-up didn't need to be dried, as it was hidden and could just air dry/drip into sink then be used when needed. The cabinet doors matched the rest of the kitchen. It was a fabulous and very practical invention.

A border force.

Love this, so right, their is one but they are just a taxi service now.

mitogoshigg · 23/02/2025 19:48

@chocolateychurros

Motorcycle couriers exist! Far less common now as most documentation is transmitted electronically but when I was working in London 25 years ago we used bikes daily. I have a friend who is motorcycle courier now and mostly transports legal documents but would happily take your charger!

mitogoshigg · 23/02/2025 19:50

@SharpWriter

I know several car parks with space indicating systems including if there's anything in that row in one case, it's only a few years old though

mitogoshigg · 23/02/2025 19:52

@miIIicant

I see police every day, usually in cars or on bikes but they are pretty visible here in Avon.

Clean streets and roadsides. The UK is filthy and it's very depressing.

Fewer fast food places. It's seems the default option is so many situations in this country.

Slower pace of life; more appreciation for the surroundings and living 'in the moment'. Brits are a hassled, moany bunch.

I do consider myself incredibly fortunate to be British and live here compared to many, many places though. This sentiment is not to confused with patriotic nonsense though!

Have you ever lived anywhere else? Because I have and I think you have a rose tinted view of other countries.

QueSyrahSyrah · 22/02/2025 13:29

So many of these things already exist in Britain?

We have the red/green car park lights, motorcycle couriers, reasonably visible police presence and public drinking water fountains where I am, to start with.

Blaster taps, fly screens and external window shutters may not come as standard but are available to have fitted if you want them.

Nothing much anybody can do about the weather!

Literally never seen the car park lights in any places I have lived. Yes we have couriers but only businesses generally use them because of the cost. Police have suffered years of budget cuts as have all our public services which accounts for a huge amount of the problems people are complaining about! Not the weather though! Even I cannot blame the Tories there 😂
