What's one thing you've seen in other countries that you wish we had here?

In my home country, we have riders on motorbikes whose job it is to transport things from one place to another.
For example, if you left your charger at your mums, you could just request one of those and they would bring it straight to you.
Mind you in that country taxis are a lot cheaper than they are over here, so even if we had something like this here it would probably be too expensive and not worth it.

Ah this was ten years ago so maybe time/covid/pressure on health service changed things.

It was South Dublin.

Ah yeah it was Dublin 😅 I live down south and as we say the Dublin divide. alot of things done differently in Dublin and take an age to filter down or never do 🤣

Litter and dog poo free streets.

These are easily remedied. People just need to dispose of their litter properly and pick up the poo. And dispose of that properly. These 2 things cost nothing but would make a difference. Fast food and snacks packaging seems to be v.common. so litter bins need to be emptied.

@aspidernamedfluffy I was just going to say we have that at Southgate

@BestImitationOfMyself I soooo miss normal sockets in bathrooms😭
Why can so many countrirs have them but not UK... Honestly tried to get electrician to install one with some bribe😭hard no

Electrical safety. People would take hairdryers, heaters, TVs in the bathroom. Water and electricity are not a good mix. What could go wrong?

LindorDoubleChoc · 22/02/2025 17:18

Pavements washed in the city centres. Underground rubbish bins. A properly state funded/subsidised train network.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 22/02/2025 17:19

In France they have a fantastic app called Doctolib for booking doctor's appointments. You book the appointment you want with the doctor you want, and if you can't get one soon enough you activate the alert function and you get a notification as soon as someone cancels an earlier appointment. It's brilliant.

Sainsbury's offer the bread slicing but I think it's one of the things that's going when they announced recent cut backs. Plus there's a fresh orange self serve thing in at least another Sainsbury's I use.

Local co op has a juicer and I've seen them in other supermarkets. I noticed a bread slicer in an Eroski on a recent holiday but not seen one here. Some shops will slice for you.

@KateDelRick taxes in Sweden are high - we lived in Copenhagen - same there - however childcare cheap, no NI (as such) and no council tax in the way we know it - wages higher too - working people come out with similar amounts of money every month but far less to pay out -

The tomato's with taste thing - if you buy nice Santini vine in M&S or Waitrose they have lots of taste- it is perfectly obtainable here , you simply can't buy the cheapest , same applies anywhere in Northern Europe that I've found

In Germany there are defined laws for when you can make noise, including DIY.

A lit easier than moans about neighbours using a drill at 7pm or children playing at 8am.
Sunday was a completely quiet day. That might be a bit much (officially included hoovering and drying washing!)

I thought we did here - or is that just for commercial contractors?

Cherrysoup · 22/02/2025 17:31

The main road outside my street is lined with cherry trees, very pretty but I’d never seen anyone up a ladder, unlike when I was a kid and a friend took a stepladder in the car just to pick cherries. Further up, there are quince/mini plum trees. Again, never picked, just make a mess on the pavement.

I wish we had a Cracker Barrel, I’d go every weekend.

11pm to 7am in England and wales

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 22/02/2025 17:32

For me it would be reliable and efficient public transport, reasonably priced.

Jane958 · 22/02/2025 17:33

Windows that open inwards for cleaning. As well as windows that "tip" vertically backwards into the room to give you fresh air without massively having to open the window (great in winter in combination with outside shutters).
Outdoor markets selling local produce 2 or 3 times a week, where, as a PP mentioned, you buy by quantity/weight.
Proper old-fashioned butchers, bakers, grocers, greengrocers and fishmongers with whom you can build a relationship.
Lack of things like soft play and attractions aimed at strapped-for-cash parents on a guilt-trip basis.
Starting work earlier and consequently finishing earlier, great to enjoy light spring and summer evenings.
Public barbecue areas in parks.

You might have if you had a 3rd party wall agreement, but I have recently found that to be a completely toothless non-law.

Yes, it's not like there are millions of people dying every year from being electrocuted in bathrooms with sockets.

Do you have aome stats for EU countries which have sockets in bathrooms as standard? Tried to find bathroom electricutions but no luck.

Pedallleur · 22/02/2025 17:34

A zero cost thing but people clearing the path on front of their house when it snows. Not just letting the snow pile up/ freeze and then complain about the icy pavements.
I noticed people mention proper shops like butchers, bakers but these places closed because customers wanted to go to a large supermarket. Unless they can go to a trendy artisan bakery and get a selfie whilst queuing for. £5 pound coffee/cruffin.

FizzingAda · 22/02/2025 17:35

Warm Sunshine
roads without potholes
fruit and veg that doesn't go off in a couple of days

Basements as a standard feature of homes. All of that useful storage space just not taken advantage of.

Machines on the walls of shops where you can deposit empty bottles for recycling and get a receipt to be redeemed in the shop. Both green and fun!

I also wish we had one specific aspect of Japanese culture in the UK: the one seen in their Apple shops, where (unlike the rest of the world) they don't bother security-chaining down their display phones/devices as everybody just thinks "Well, it doesn't belong to me, so why on earth would I just take it without buying it?!"

We have the drinks deposit scheme here in Ireland. you bring the plastic bottles and cans back to shops and supermarkets and get your deposit back. you pay the deposit at time buying bottles and cans. it's been in for about a year and caused huge up roar. The Joe Duffy line exploded for like a month after. people still giving out about it. people not happy about it. but it's been a great success and also seen an impact on street litter.
the only thing that annoys me is the recycling machines bloody stink. some need to be cleaned properly and have had to invest in another bin in my utility as was fed up seeing empty bottles etc there

Wexone · 22/02/2025 17:40

Thanks for the reminder. I do buy Santini vine toms from Waitrose when I can get there, not recently. They are a big improvement over what’s available in my village, yes. I also agree this isn’t just a British problem. I will leave it there.

SomethingFun · 22/02/2025 17:42

A sense of responsibility and pride in your nationality. Being embarrassed and ashamed to be British means we are generally very negative about our country and we don’t value it. It’s a beautiful place full of nature and history and we cover it in dogshit and litter and ridiculously expensive housing.
