Very 'normal' things that make you feel awkward

First of all I'm sticking a 'lighthearted' in here. 😊

A friend and I had this conversation the other day and it made us both laugh, so maybe it'll cheer up a wet and windy day for some.

Some of mine:

When people wish me happy birthday on Facebook. It's very lovely of people but makes me feel so weird and embarrassed, so I now have my birthday hidden.

Waiting to get off a bus. Not sure what I think will happen, but I get all weird and stressed in case I forget to thank the driver. Which would never happen because it's so drummed into me.

Standing behind people at a cash machine. Even though I stand well back, I fear I might look a shifty and robby type, so try to arrange my face as benignly as possible, hence looking slightly vacant.

Walking past my own house. This is so weird and I've no idea why it makes me feel like I should give a jolly wave to my house.

Please tell me I'm not alone in my weirdness ...

Urghhhh and when I'm meeting someone in public and I spot them I cannot stop myself from grinning like some sort of a maniac all the way until I get to where they're standing

AviationGeek · 22/02/2025 18:43

Ok, this one is a normal thing for Benidorm.

My friend and I were on holiday and went to see Sticky Vicky, as you do😁
We found somewhere to stand and the bloke next to me said hello. When I looked it was my old school caretaker. We exchanged pleasantries and awkward eye contact while Sticky Vicky was busy opening a bottle of beer with her vag among other things.😂

I was always scared of coming downstairs if we had visitors. I was reasonably ok if I was downstairs at the time they arrived though.

I feel the same- sort of ‘tada..I’m here!’. Probably a hangover from awkward teen with my parents’ friends.

canyouseemyhousefromhere · 22/02/2025 18:50

I get ridiculously embarrassed if I have to take money from someone (e.g. money for tickets I’ve bought for a group or a work collection). I hated collecting the money when I was an Avon rep, 😳

Snooks1971 · 22/02/2025 18:52

@MoonWoman69 @AlisonWhatIsTheMatter i walk the same towards any traffic. As in, I forget how to walk normally.

I’m honestly not showboating but apparently according to my DM I started walking at 9 months and I’m now 53. So I DO know how to walk!!!! But there is something about putting one foot in front of the other if I feel like I’m being watched that makes me walk weirdly.

Shelleybelly · 22/02/2025 18:52

Getting into a taxi that I've ordered and is sitting outside my house, but checking it's for me before I get in. Then where am I supposed to sit? And will i be expected to make conversation?

Having to look at the back of your head when they hold up a mirror at the hairdressers. What are you meant to say?

That awkward guilty feeling you get when there's a police car driving behind you. Even though I'm a police officer and I haven't nicked my car 🤣 I even feel like this when driving a police car 🙄

That awkward feeling when they check you're over 18 on a self serve check out. I don't know what I'm expecting, I'm 48!

PurpleYarnivore · 22/02/2025 18:52

I’m not good at hugging / kissing friends and non immediate family .
telephone calls - I have to write down the main points I want to say .
answering the door to deliveries .
opening presents in front of others .
agree with the Facebook birthday thing - I get stressed ab thanking everyone .
getting in and out of bed in the dark as always think someone under the bed will grab my ankles .
hairdressers - hate the small talk .
Seeing someone you know as an acquaintance - I never know if to say hello and they might not remember me or ignore and appear rude .

thought I was weird but seem to be lots of other people with similar quirks !

Oh I went through a car washing machine thing with a friend. She disclosed that for some reason it turned her on. I don't know why she shared that but watching the white foamy bubbles drip down the windscreen knowing this was somehow sexual for her made me die a bit inside. I don't know how long car washes usually take but that went on FOREVER 😧

Just spat my coffee out! 🤣

Bignanna · 22/02/2025 18:56

I don’t feel so weird now!

Funkyslippers · 22/02/2025 18:56

Calling out to someone or waving at them and they just carry on walking and don't acknowledge you. I want to say to anyone who saw, they do like me, honestly, they just didn't hear/see me!

Watching a musical at the theatre. The exaggerated singing and facial expressions made me feel awkward and embarrassed. I know another person who feels the same.

Oh I HATE musicals (with a couple of very specific exceptions).
Someone surprised me with a trip to the theatre to see Kinky Boots the musical. I cringed the whole way through & every time they burst into song I just wanted to shout “FOR GOODNESS SAKE, JUST TALK!”

Being the first of the group to walk into the venue we’re attending.

wearing something new/new haircut/different make up in case someone acknowledges it.

Me too 😂 also I'd be too scared to get a new haircut/new makeup look etc incase they'd didn't recognise me lol. In school I was too scared to wear my hair tied up instead of down incase people didn't realise it was me!!

LyndaSnellsSniff · 22/02/2025 19:01

Going to work after having a haircut. What if nobody notices?! What if someone notices and comments?! It's a minefield and I hate it.

Miley1967 · 22/02/2025 19:01

I feel so socially awkward about lots of things, lots of them mentioned here. When walking the dogs, do you say hi to people as you pass them , do you joke when dogs sniff bottoms etc. As others have said I cringe when people present me with a birthday card or flowers at work. Clients sometimes give me a small gift and I cringe. I hate it on radio competitions where people win stuff and they go wild with excitement - is it that i feel jealous or something ? I literally have to turn the radio off. I am sensitive and feel other peoples hurt really acutely but also feel so embarrassed for people also, especially when people have no self awareness.

BurntBroccoli · 22/02/2025 19:02

Going for a walk and meeting someone coming the other way. I never know what to do with my eyes! Actually had this problem too when I working in a large building when passing people in the corridor.

Being on a Teams meeting with multiple people. I never know what to do with my face and I always look ridiculous!

zigazigahhhh · 22/02/2025 19:03

Haha these are all so funny and SO true. Also walking out of a shop incase I've accidentally stolen something. Same with airport security - I'm always convinced I might look dodgy and they'll think I'm smuggling something

AviationGeek · 22/02/2025 18:25

My Dad was a decorator. He and his mate went to do some work for an older lady. It was in the days of page 3 girls and she'd thoughtfully been collecting them for a few weeks. She'd put them down to cover the carpet. Literally wall to wall tits 😂

You should do stand up - your stories are genuinely hilarious 😂

Snooks1971 · 22/02/2025 19:04

Oh, and my other one, not as often as just walking along but when at the dentist.

I’m there with a gaping wide open mouth, when the dentist turns away for 2-3 seconds to pick up a different instrument do I still lie there with my mouth stretched open like a cavern? Do I close it whilst I wait those few seconds? Which scenario is more weird? And I never know what to do with my hands. Cross them over my tummy like I’m really enjoying the experience, should I then be nonchalant and cross my ankles too? Or arms down by my sides like I’m in a straight jacket? Do I close my eyes during this?

The thought of me lying there, eyes closed, mouth wide open. How dentists keep a straight face I will never know!

the80sweregreat · 21/02/2025 10:57

I understand the weird

I dread meeting up with people (friends or just anyone tbh) and having to decide what greeting is appropriate….if it’s a kiss (or two) and if so which side first etc. or a hug? Major panic I’ll end up kissing them on the lips with in-decision or just seem cold as I say hello and move on quickly…

BurntBroccoli · 22/02/2025 19:18

@Choccyp1g

"It's the opposite for me, I don't like being called by my name as part of a conversation. For example someone saying, "It's a nice day Choccy" or "tell you what Choccy, let's have a cup of tea" "

You would hate my manager! He says my name after every sentence. He does it to everyone - it's so weird and cringey as we are not customers!

I always think what a horrible view they get when staring up our noses! I close my eyes as I don’t want to look up his nose.
What a funny lot we are!

Haha. I still feel super awkward about this. It happened last week when I was upstairs feeding dd when my in-laws arrived. I was cringing so hard going into my own living room and I don't know why

BurntBroccoli · 22/02/2025 19:22

VictoriaEra2 · 21/02/2025 12:34

Completely identify with a lot of these. It’s so nice to know it’s not just me that always tries to look ‘benign’ and not ‘Robby’.

😂 I can relate!
I always feel really guilty passing the security guard on the way out of Tesco's. Bizarre! I'm totally not a robby person!

coxesorangepippin · 22/02/2025 19:22

I’ve been dreading my last day at work for 32 years now

🤣

🤣

BurntBroccoli · 22/02/2025 19:27

Crying at some of these 😂

If I heard the postman ringing the door and I was still in my jim jams, I would hide in the kitchen cupboard in case he came round the back garden to put the parcel in the shed!
