How old do you think this child is?

Please settle this debate! DP thinks one thing, I think another.

The child in question read this page fluently. Found the word 'calcium' tricky.

At what age would you expect a child to be reading this?

7 ish

SoulMole · 19/02/2025 16:31

What page? Mumsnet?

ThreeMagicNumber · 19/02/2025 16:32

Between 1 and 17.

Screamingabdabz · 19/02/2025 16:33

Depends on the comprehension. Some young children can learn basic phonetics but it doesn’t mean a whole heap if they can’t make sense of it.

😕

Photo is fuzzy. There are formulas avaliable to work out the reading the age of text.

saveforthat · 19/02/2025 16:38

These threads are pointless as every child is different.

MummytoE · 19/02/2025 16:40

Hate these kinds of things. Parents fishing to be told their child is advanced no doubt.

TeenToTwenties · 19/02/2025 16:40

6-10. Or older. Or younger.

Newuser75 · 19/02/2025 16:42

It really depends on the child. You will get all sorted of responses I'm sure.
My just turned six year old could read that with ease but he is a pretty good reader.

aintnospringchicken · 19/02/2025 16:42

Anywhere from 5-9/10 years old

SmokeRingsOfMyMind · 19/02/2025 16:43

It could be anything from reception age up - I have a fond memory of my daughter in reception year reading "The giraffe, the pelly and me" to herself on the sofa and being in tears when the characters parted at the end, so definitely possible for a younger child to read more complex text.

Is the kid interested in minibeasts? It’s amazing the difference in reading ability when the subject matter is compelling.

Newbie887 · 19/02/2025 16:43

I know a 4 year old who started reception being able to read at this level. I also know a 9 year old who wouldn’t be able to read it.

my daughter is an average reader and would be able to read it fluently, she is 7 and in y2

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 19/02/2025 16:45

Hard to say. They’re all different. Going on my dds about 5/6, so year 1. But probably anywhere between 4 and 9 I guess could be considered usual, I guess. Though I’m not a teacher.

Whoarethoseguys · 19/02/2025 16:46

It's impossible to say all children develop reading skills at different times.so any age between 5 and 16

ritasuebobtoo · 19/02/2025 16:47

About 6yrs old

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 19/02/2025 16:49

As an average, I'd say a free reader age 7-8. Year 3. Chitin is a tricky word to pronounce (did they say it correctly as kie-tin?).

ErrolTheDragon · 19/02/2025 16:50

No idea. Some kids take to reading early, some later during primary school but it doesn't necessarily predict what they'll be doing by the start of secondary and later.

And then of course there's being able to read the words fluently and actually have some understanding of what they mean. A young child might be able to say the words 'calcium carbonate' but not have a clue what they meant, one child might ask and engage with a discussion about chemistry while another wouldn't. 🤷‍♀️

SchoolDilemma17 · 19/02/2025 16:51

what’s the point? To prove your DC is advanced?

pandora206 · 19/02/2025 16:51

I'd say an average 7-8 year old could decode that level of text fluently.

However, to be able to 'read' in the broader sense of the word, they would be able to answer questions about the text accurately, such as:

What do minibeasts not have (that many other creatures do)?
What is an exoskeleton?
Give three examples of minibeasts.
