How old do you think this child is?

Please settle this debate! DP thinks one thing, I think another.

The child in question read this page fluently. Found the word 'calcium' tricky.

At what age would you expect a child to be reading this?

My daughter is 5, almost 6 and could read that fluently. She’s a bit ahead in her reading but I would say that’s end of year 1 standard so 6 years old.

Merrygoround8 · 19/02/2025 20:07

My 5-6 year old could read that.

A friends kid would have read this easily at 4

My daughter would have a good go (she's 5) but struggle with bigger words

MolkosTeenageAngst · 19/02/2025 20:12

I’d expect most 7 year olds to be able to read this (obviously discounting SEN) especially if they are interested enough in minibeasts to be familiar with the vocabulary. That said there will be plenty of children able to read this much younger and also many who won’t be able to read it at that age. If your child is 3 (or under) then I’d say that’s very unusual, especially if they are comprehending it. For a four-year-old it’s certainly well above what the average could read but equally not remarkable, there will probably be at least 1 child kids in most reception classes who could read something like this especially if they are interested in minibeasts.

MagentaRavioli · 19/02/2025 20:14

Reception or Y1

WhySoManySocks · 19/02/2025 20:14

One of my children could do this at 6 months and the other 3 months before birth, peering through my belly button.

YABU.

Roastiesarethebestbit · 19/02/2025 20:18

There is no answer. My kids learnt to read quickly and would have read this at 5. I work with kids who couldn’t read this at 14. If your child is 5 I wouldn’t get too excited. Being an early reader doesn’t mean you are a gifted child. Both mine are now decidedly average, despite being top of the class for everything in reception!

FiveBarGate · 19/02/2025 20:25

My 7 year old could read it but I don't think she'd fully comprehend it.

Exoskeleton for example I think she'd be able to read but she wouldn't know what it means.

Zippidydoodah · 19/02/2025 20:26

I think year 2, so 6-7. Could they read the number (40,000)? As my son could read the words (mostly) but not the number.

Bunnycat101 · 19/02/2025 20:31

My 5yo in y1 would be able to do that but would struggle with calcium and exoskeleton. I don’t think she’d have be able to do that for most of reception. She’s a bit above average so I’d say y2 might be more typical but as all the teachers have said kids vary massively.

GRCP · 19/02/2025 20:35

5 or 6

Why, how old is the actual child?

Mayana1 · 19/02/2025 20:40

ThreeMagicNumber · 19/02/2025 16:32

Between 1 and 17.

Reading at 1?

BornSandyDevotional · 19/02/2025 20:48

It's good to know a whole new generation of people will be really good at PowerPoint and Excel. Always best to get primary school aged children to read misinformation about insects, arachnoids etc in an AI 'illustrated' book instead of taking them outside to look at actual 'minibeasts'.

Reading at 1?

Why not? It is Mumsnet.

Carezzamia · 19/02/2025 20:52

6 months, mine has been eyeing Tolkien as soon as he came out and opened his eyes but couldn't hold the book until 6 months

I think they're both phonetic. It's more the meaning of the words though, surely? Not just reciting them? Just let them read the Moomins. And enjoy the pictures. On their little own.

PheasantPluckers · 19/02/2025 20:54

I'd say around the yr 1 mark, early Yr 2.

This. These threads are so tedious.

Jk987 · 19/02/2025 21:01

What did they read?

We could co-fund joint therapy? In the pub, maybe! 😂

Count me in!😂

arlequin · 19/02/2025 21:03

6-7

Yousay55 · 19/02/2025 21:04

Anywhere from 3 upwards. However, if they are 3 and 4 reading this level, very often (not sure what the statistics are) they may be neurodivergent.

confusedlots · 19/02/2025 21:05

Obviously every child is different, but my 7 year old would be able to read that .

AndOnAndOn1000 · 19/02/2025 21:06

5-7 year old
