VW CAR GOLF OR POLO

Can anyone advise. If the difference in money was not the main issue would you buy a new polo or golf.

Background is that not a really confident driver esp parking. Still impressed by all school mums who manage to drive massive suv trucks everywhere and park them. I’ve never had any parking tech in my previous cars ( no sensors or camera) . So maybe this tech helps?

Have only driven VW so don’t want to change, I’m sure other cars are better Škoda is the same etc but I just don’t want to go there.

I am only choosing between another polo to replace my old one or upgrade to a golf. Only me and two kids. Annoyingly they seemed to have increased the size of cars. Is the new golf really big for city driving and parking compared to the polo. Is the polo too wobbly and lightweight for fast driving on motorway?

I’ve driven a vw t-roc and vw t-cross recently, which I believe are based on the golf and polo chassis. Because they’re (small) SUV’s, the seating position is slightly higher which I think makes driving slightly easier, and they feel quite roomy inside. Definitely worth considering.

WhatMe123 · 18/02/2025 22:08

I tried both, the golf is a lot bigger than the polo so I went for the polo as it's mainly just me and the two kids in tjere. I love it, I find mine fine on the motorway. The golf would be better for motorway journeys of course but for ease of town driving the polo is a great car I'd say

Sheldonsheher · 18/02/2025 22:09

Thanks I have decided against Troy and cross because I don’t want the higher up position at the moment. I test drove a t roc. Not sure if it’s my age but suddenly found driving new cars anxiety provoking.

I used to have a golf but it seems much bigger now?

I have a polo and it's great on the motorway. Doesn't feel like a small car at all. Don't go for the smallest engine size is my advice though

Sheldonsheher · 18/02/2025 22:15

Yes I won’t get the smallest engine I heard that was too weak.

I was looking at the higher spec polos do the price is not far off the lower golfs so was not sure. My old polo is quite small inside.

We have a new Polo and love it. No issues driving on motorways. We have a bigger car as well but the Polo is the one always in demand here.,

OfDragonsDeep · 18/02/2025 22:18

We have both. DH takes the polo to work on dual carriage way and I mostly drive the golf with the kids. If we go out as a family we take the Golf.

If I had to pick one it would be the golf, but I like that it’s slightly bigger (but I would not call it a ‘big’ car)

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 18/02/2025 22:26

I like the golf more xx

Sheldonsheher · 18/02/2025 22:36

Do you have the bigger new polo or an older one? It seems to have grown?

GreenElfWitch · 18/02/2025 22:43

I have a Golf and love it. I think of it as a medium car, surrounded by then insanity of most other people in SUVs.

JaneBoleynViscountessRochford · 18/02/2025 22:49

DH had a Golf and still regrets changing tbh, I think he will go back to one when it’s time for a new car. I always hated the look of them so rolled my eyes a bit when he bought it but then loved driving it and used any excuse to take his car when going out somewhere.

My Mum used to have a Polo and it felt a bit cramped but that was years ago so an older version.

Pashazade · 18/02/2025 22:52

This site lets you compare actual dimensions. Might not be as much as you think, or might feel bigger inside but overall size isn't that different.

They help enormously. I've got a golf - an estate at that - it's got all round sensors so it's easy to park. (It can park itself but I've never needed to use that). Our other car is a similar size and has sensors front, camera rear - even better.

Really you need to test drive them to see how you feel.

Llttledrummergirl · 19/02/2025 00:00

Ds2 has just bought a Hyundai i20. Compared to the polo he tried, it was so much better. Dh was in the back for the test drive and was pleasantly surprised by the head and leg room.

Sheldonsheher · 19/02/2025 00:06

Thanks I don’t think I can go looking at other makes it’s too much for my driving nerves. I think just need to choose between these two cars!

We have an up it's tiny but an easy drive. Polo is more like the old golf from the 90s.

Not been in a golf for years

What do you want to use it for. Suitcases? Dogs ? Kids.

If none of these then a polo should work ?

Deliberationdivinationdesperation · 19/02/2025 08:12

I used to love my polo, then I upgraded it for a golf. The golf is quite wide, I'd find that when I parked in a parking space it would be practically touching the lines on each side so I think if parking is a problem then another polo would be better for you. However I found both too small for family life anyway and have since got a bigger car with a much bigger boot so I guess it also depends on how big of a boot you need

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 19/02/2025 08:27

They are very similar. DH drives a Polo GTi, and I've had a series of Golfs. I loved them all (I only don't have one at the moment as my car comes with my job, and they weren't choice when my last lease expired).

May seem like a strange consideration, but how old are the kids? How long are you likely to keep the car? If you're likley to have tall teens, with cricket bags, rucsacs and musical instruments, then it might be worth going for the larger cabin space of the Golf.

LoveSandbanks · 19/02/2025 09:00

We had this exact dilemma a year or so ago. We went with the golf because it’s safer. Our 16 year old will be driving to college next year, on the motorway.

im not saying the polos aren’t safe, just that the golf is safer.

roses2 · 19/02/2025 09:02

Where do you drive - city or motorway? If mostly city then a polo will do you just fine. If you regularly use the motorway, the golf will be a smoother drive.

I have a VW Taigo which is ok but I will be going back to a VW T Roc when I change it. I much prefer the higher up driving position of the T Roc, although the Taigo is higher than the Golf, which my DH has. I feel car sick in the Golf!
But the solution to good parking is to have parking sensors fitted - which the vast majority of new cars now have.

Sheldonsheher · 19/02/2025 09:10

I have 2 kids oldest is 10
i am tall so a bit worried the polo is too small.
would keep several years so needs to be good for that
