VW CAR GOLF OR POLO

Can anyone advise. If the difference in money was not the main issue would you buy a new polo or golf.

Background is that not a really confident driver esp parking. Still impressed by all school mums who manage to drive massive suv trucks everywhere and park them. I’ve never had any parking tech in my previous cars ( no sensors or camera) . So maybe this tech helps?

Have only driven VW so don’t want to change, I’m sure other cars are better Škoda is the same etc but I just don’t want to go there.

I am only choosing between another polo to replace my old one or upgrade to a golf. Only me and two kids. Annoyingly they seemed to have increased the size of cars. Is the new golf really big for city driving and parking compared to the polo. Is the polo too wobbly and lightweight for fast driving on motorway?

I have had different Golfs for over a decade now. They are great to drive especially around urban areas. I like mine because it really is for nipping just one of my DC around at a time

The back is cramped so not really suitable for older DC regularly. It is good as a 2 person car. It is too cramped for DH.

They do not last that long the suspension went on my last one and I drove it pretty carefully. Golfs do not like pot holes and humps in the road.

I would still buy a Golf as they're fantastic to drive.

I used to drive Polo's but moved to Golf's. Have had 3 Golf's in the last 9 years and would definitely recommend them.
Don't be put off by the slight increase in size. It will take you a day or 2 to get used to it and you'll never go back and wonder what all the fuss was.

A Golf is great around town and for motorways. Get petrol. The rear camera is great quality if u can get that. If u can afford automatic then even better but not essential.

I also drive a Renault Arkana and a Transit van but will always go back to my beloved Golf. Simple dash, nothing over complicated. Clear cameras. Nippy, fast, comfortable and reliable.

Thanks yes this is what I am wondering if I will get used to it after a day or two. I have had my polo for over a decade and I think this is what is the issue I have got scared to try something new

I have had both. I curre tly have a polo. If I had the cash i would get the golf.

cansu · 19/02/2025 09:32

They are both lovely to drive . I would also say that I am a bit like you - nervous about driving anything different but you would be absolutely fine. Within a day or two you would not feel or notice it being an issue.

Plus you'll look so much cooler in a Golf 😎

I’d go for a polo. I prefer a small car. Not because I worry about driving or parking a larger one, but they just tend to be better on fuel and it is nice being able to squeeze into tiny spaces. I have an i10 and drive it everywhere. It handles the motorway fine so I’m sure a polo which is bigger wouldn’t have any issues on the motorway.

I've had 3 Golfs, including a GTi, currently drive a high spec Audi A1, and I'd rather have a high spec Polo than a low spec Golf.

Edited

Can you explain why to a non car person. I’m not a fast driver. Have to go on duel carriage though 70 mph.

Polo spec doesn’t go that high. ( except gti)

Higher specs are generally less plasticky, better trim, nicer fabric, better comfort, more safety stuff and whatnot. It's not just about going faster.

I have a Golf GTI and a Polo R line my daughter uses. I love driving the polo, always amazes me how nice it is. Bought it because it has the best safety rating in class and like you didn't like the Skoda/Seat offerings. Well worth it.
The Golf doesn't feel big - no. If you can stretch to a golf you will be really happy with it. Both are great cars although the controls on the Golf Mk8 take a bit of getting used to where the polo is more mechanical.

bilbodog · 19/02/2025 10:42

We swapped a 10 year old polo for an almost new, larger polo a year ago - its virtually the size of a golf. The only thing im having trouble getting used to is the touch screen in front which controls all the heating and a/c. Because its touch screen you need to take your eyes off the road to adjust everything rather than just reaching out and turning a knob. Mine is only 1 litre but feels like a much bigger engine to me. I can recommend getting heated seats!

Does it feel bigger than your ten year old polo? Or does it feel the same inside for tall people?

GreenElfWitch · 19/02/2025 10:55

I specifically chose a Golf 7 because we didn't fancy the full touch screen Golf 8.

bilbodog · 19/02/2025 12:55

@Sheldonsheher

the new one feels much bigger than the old polo. Its an R- series so higher inside spec - thats because i wanted heated front seats - worth it.

GreenElfWitch · 19/02/2025 13:47

I do love my heated front seats, would be hard to go back to not having them.

Sheldonsheher · 19/02/2025 14:41

Thanks was looking at r line polo but then realised the money was not a huge difference to the golf match versions and hence the concern. I find my 2015 polo quite small now I think about it.

Sheldonsheher · 23/02/2025 18:05

Thanks so test drove so happy with golf.

my next car question is should I get a brand new car ( More basic spec) or a slightly used (5000) miles higher spec version. r line with sunroof etc . Same engine just trim higher.

or a hybrid plug in used 1000 miles

all approx same price?

I can’t work out the best decision / long term decision .

Well they devalue the moment they leave the forecourt, so I'd say the slightly used. Although the decrease is probably less these days.
