Gabby Petito

In tears holding my 2 month old baby girl having just finished watching the new Gabby Petito Netflix doc. What can we do for our girls to educate and keep them safe as they grow up? The statistics of domestic abuse by loved ones are terrifying.

I was screaming at the TV, those cops on the body came footage, ffs the witness said he saw the man hit the girl !

Poor gabby so let down

Why do people watch these though? What are you getting from it?

Curiosity and closure. It was a big story in the news last year, it bothered me and I wanted to know what happened. It also gives Gabby' family a chance to get their side of the story across which is hopefully cathartic for them and helps with their healing process.

Cookiesandcandies · 20/02/2025 07:22

@healthybychristmas And they gave him a hotel room and left her to sleep in a van on her own! She was only 22 and a tiny young woman.

I thought this, but my husband then pointed out they'd actually given her a way to get away. Putting her in the hotel would've meant he had to pick her up in the morning, leaving her the van meant she could get away if she'd wanted to.

No, they didn't. They didn't probe deeply enough to find out what was going on. He had marks on him and so did she. She appeared deeply distressed and he was laughing and joking with the officers. They should have taken her somewhere completely away from him and brought in specifically trained officers to talk to her - she may have been able to open up more if she was in a safe place. Instead, they treated him as the victim and put him in a hotel where they house domestic abuse victims. And left her alone and distressed in a van in the middle of nowhere, far from home. Their original report was of a man slapping his girlfriend. Frankly, they were negligent.

This !!! It was awful how they joked with him and suggested she go have a shower..so much calm down dear, silly little woman vibes. You can clearly tell that this wasn't on their radar that something else might be going on. Totally tone deaf and clearly had no training on how to deal with this.

JandamiHash · 20/02/2025 08:49

It’s on my to-watch list as well so bookmarking to come back to

susiedaisy1912 · 20/02/2025 09:55

The 'hotel' they put him up in was a hotel used as a base for dv victims so it wasn't a luxurious hotel it was a state funded basic place. And as others have said this gave her the van and a way to get away from him if she needed to. But they didn't even stay away from each other for the full night as the officers advised, they met back up later that same night. Gabby displayed all the usual signs of being groomed and manipulated by a slightly older man who made her believe she was being silly, and overreactive to his behaviour this left her riddled with anxiety so she doubted her self about everything when it came to him. The texts he sent showed that he made her constantly need to reassure him of her love and loyalty to him and to explain her actions to him over and over. Then he would shower her with love and affection which is hard for any person to ignore. To me it seemed like classic narcissist behaviour from him. She was young and separated from her family by geography and desperate to be in a loving relationship.

To begin with mothers need to educate their sons. Those men are raised by women. See the series and you will see the mother of Brian.

Absolutely this!

Floralnomad · 20/02/2025 10:58

It’s a crying shame that Brian’s parents couldn’t be charged with something , they lied repeatedly and their behaviour is disgusting , I’m pleased that Gabriella’s family sued them but they should be doing some kind of prison time .

I understand why but I think prison time is unnecessary honestly, I suspect they have probably had a worse time of it being out... The world knows their name, their faces, what they did. I imagine they feel the disgust of their community everytime they go outside and that people probably aren't shy about voicing it. And they lost their son too... I know he's a monster to us but to love a child (which they clearly did) and lose them and know everyone else is glad of their passing has got to be really hard. I believe they helped Brian leave to hide but that the suicide was a shock to them, I wonder if they are haunted by the thoughts of if they had turned him in they could at least have visited him in jail.
I don't see what else a sentence would achieve, they have suffered their natural consequences.

Gonewiththesun · 20/02/2025 14:31

I've been watching 'My Lover, My Killer.' I was shocked at the episode I watched last night, crying and horrified that somebody could be so evil. It was the murder of Bethany Vincent and her beautiful little ND boy D.J. I felt sick, and won't be watching any more of the series. It was bad enough for that poor young women , but then her 9 year old boy to be killed brutally as well. I just hope that little boy didn't see his mother killed. I just wish he had have stayed with his Dad, and wasn't around that night. I have similar age dcs and it really hit home. Those poor grandparents bringing up their daughter's second son whose dad killed his Mum, and half brother. Their strength is incredible, what amazing people they are. I just cannot put that kind of evil into words.

Ezzee · 20/02/2025 14:39

Having been in a DV situation and working with victims of DV it is a lot more complex than getting Mums/Dads to educate, this should also be something taught at schools and talked about openly in front of children ( in a child related way).
As a previous poster stated 'groomed' gaslit and so fucking scared, ashamed and still believing in the person who is abusing you are what needs to be talked about. Most victims don't report or leave because of these and the misguided belief that the person 'loves you' ... education is what is needed, telling someone its ok to leave/ they can come home etc is not enough.
I do believe his parents should be prosecuted and jailed as they fucking knew, they aided him and left a family absolutely distraught about the whereabouts of their child.

Floralnomad · 20/02/2025 15:39

@Barleysugar86 sorry but I have to disagree and at the very least they should have been charged with perverting the course of justice or the US equivalent . They blatantly lied to the police at their home saying that he had flown back when he’d driven her van home and that letter she wrote to him saying she’d bring the shovel to bury the body showed her intent to cover up the crime . If I’d been Gabbys family I’d have wanted charges even if it only ended up being a fine or a conviction on their records . I have adult children but I hope I’m a decent enough human to behave better than she did ,yes they love their son but they treated someone else’s child like a piece of rubbish , there is always a middle ground .

andHelenknowsimmiserablenow · 21/02/2025 07:15

Still on episode two. I cannot believe the police treated HIM as the victim when they pulled them over in Moab, even though the witness who called it in said she was bieng slapped around.
And why couldn't they have arrested him when they got to his parents house and found him there? So what if he had a lawyer? She was a missing person, and they were all deliberately hiding information. Isn't that a crime itself?

GameOfJones · 21/02/2025 07:19

Does this have anything to do with children? I wanted to watch it but am still traumatised from watching American Murder. I can't watch anything where kids are hurt anymore.

No. No children

I’ve just finished it. She was such a sweet, innocent, young woman.
I can’t believe the cops treated him as the victim when they pulled them over.

I binge watched this yesterday Gabby seemed to be saying that she started the argument ,so they were treating her as the main ageessor
Having said that I couldn't understand why they got him a hotel room and left her with the van, she was clearly vulnerable and very upset and he was laughing and joking.

Snoopdoggydog123 · 20/02/2025 10:42

Because they both gave a story where he was the victim.

I think it should have raised alarm bells that she was quickly and anxiously trying to defend him and take responsibility whilst clearly distraught and crying. He was relaxed and laughing and joking with the officers. The 911 callers also clearly stated they had seen him slapping her. They missed warning signs and were far too quick to dismiss the situation.

dothehokeycokey · 22/02/2025 00:36

It doesn't take a trained eye to see how petrified she looks in the back of that police car.

If a policeman or women had of sat quietly with her away from him and ask her the same questions they could have got a different response and the turn out could have been so so different.

The eyewitness called it in that he slapped her and that's what they should have gone on

That and an instinct

Just in their body language and the difference in their demeanour showed she was in fear and yet an opportunity slipped by so easily.

His parents should have been charged with concealing a suspect and perverting the course of justice the disposable bastards

dothehokeycokey · 22/02/2025 00:37

Dispicable

SulkySeagull · 22/02/2025 07:18

I don’t know if she looked and sounded like she was fearful of Brian when the police pulled her over - she was begging not to be split up from him and saying it was her fault. He also had very visible scratch marks across his face. I don’t think it was as cut and dry as it being obvious he was the aggressor and her and innocent victim (in that moment).

What I couldnt believe was that the police rocked up to his parents house - they refused to talk, said he was there and had a lawyer and he had her van and the police didn’t immediately demand to speak to him! The police seemed to tiptoe round the parents. Madness.

sciaticafanatica · 22/02/2025 07:44

Brian's mother is a disgrace to women.
Enabling her son's behaviour and offering all the help he needed.

Because the police can't demand that.
People have rights.

Why do young women like Gabby have such low self esteem? She was beautiful, a talented artist, creative & good hearted. I see this so much, some guy comes along that’s sub par on every level and the young woman acts like she’s not worthy. Why?

Brian gave me Patrick Bateman vibes from the start.

NB: Why did a lone woman pick up a male hitchhiker?!

UnderHisEeyore · 23/02/2025 09:56

It isn't the girls we need to educate - other than that they are more likely to be killed by their partner or an ex than anyone else so they have to leave at the very first sign of violence.

We ultimately need to get rid of the people in charge of social media who are calling for an increase in male aggression.
