because I've definitely seen some and taken a screen shot.

Depends. Is it inciting others to violence against a particular group?

BodyKeepingScore · 16/02/2025 18:40

Define "online hate crime"...

KittenPause · 16/02/2025 18:40

If you mean to the police then yes

Organisedwannabe · 16/02/2025 18:42

Which crime?

FaithFables · 16/02/2025 18:46

It depends, is inciting violence? Or is it something you just disagree with? Do they use words that people would never use these days (like the n word), or are they just saying something opposed to a certain culture/lifestyle?

lentilbake16 · 16/02/2025 19:10

Its vile racist stuff....variations on "they are all the same/ they kill people/ don't let them in"

Hmmm, no. That's not a hate crime. It's despicable, but we don't live in a dictatorship, people are allowed opinions, however vile they may be.

BusyExpert · 16/02/2025 19:17

not a hate crime. Its an opinion.

artfuldodgerjack · 16/02/2025 19:19

Just because you don't agree with what has been said doesn't mean it's a crime...

Maddy70 · 16/02/2025 19:26

Yes if it's affecting others. Of course!

Organisedwannabe · 16/02/2025 19:26

A hate crime is a crime motivated by hate. For some thing to be a hate crime, first there has to have been a crime comitted.

BeeCucumber · 16/02/2025 19:27

Was it on Facebook?

Unechatte · 16/02/2025 19:28

It’s not illegal to be racist.

I see stuff like this on social media all the time. It's incredibly common. I now feel more shocked when I don't see these comments in relation to certain stories.
I've never reported them to the police but I report them to Facebook. It's depressing the hateful remarks that Facebook refuses to delete.

SallyWD · 16/02/2025 19:35

Unechatte · 16/02/2025 19:28

It’s not illegal to be racist.

Hate speech is illegal. Speaking about groups in a derogatory, intolerant, dehumanising or hateful way is illegal. Penalties include fines and imprisonment. I actually wish these penalties were given out more frequently.
The racists continually bleat that they are being "silenced" yet they're breaking the law every time they demonise their chosen groups.

BobbyBiscuits · 16/02/2025 19:41

Saying racist remarks like 'send them back/they're all arseholes' etc is very unpleasant but if it's not inviting violence then it might not be a crime. Racist opinions aren't illegal.
If someone said, 'we should blow up the church/mosque/synagogue etc' then that could be classed as such.
Tell the police by all means but you're better off just blocking and ignoring vile opinions you disagree with. Or telling people straight that it's not on and it's racist. But you can't stop people from saying their opinion to an extent. Sadly.

SallyWD · 16/02/2025 19:44

Expressing hatred based on things such as gender, race, religion or sexuality is illegal. You don't have to be inciting violence: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hate_speech_laws_in_the_United_Kingdom

lentilbake16 · 16/02/2025 19:46

I see it all the time and for the most part, move on. But this was particularly unpleasant.

OP posts:
INeedAnotherName · 16/02/2025 20:38

Incitement to rape or murder, or planning a mass football brawl/riot are about the only things I would report but seeing as how the police aren't particularly bothered about doing anything after women have been raped or killed I'm slowly coming to the conclusion my report might not be taken seriously anyway.

EDIT - to answer your question. No, I wouldn't report it.

You're being racist towards demons in your post right there. I do hope you've reported your comment to the police?

DaffodilsDillyDally · 16/02/2025 22:29

Have the police not got better things to be getting on with than hurty words? People can be horrible, get over it. As long as they’re not inciting violence they are allowed their opinion, even if you or I don’t agree with them.

LastTrainsEast · 16/02/2025 22:34

Unless it's an actual crime then you'll be reporting people for holding different opinions. Which is quite a popular hobby these days.

Hating isn't illegal I hate rapists and child abusers for example. Feel free to have me arrested for that, but you should be prepared to stand up in court and explain why you think they don't deserve to be hated.

If you ever wonder what you would have done in 1930s Germany, you’re doing it now.

Your own link says you are wrong.

A hate crime is crime where a perpetrator targets a victim because of their physical appearance or perceived membership of a certain social group.

Note that it has to be a crime first. Otherwise it's a Non-crime hate incident (NCHI)

"Actions or speech perceived to demonstrate hostility towards a person's protected characteristics, such as race, religion, sexual orientation, or disability. These incidents do not meet the threshold of a criminal offence."

Supporting Free Speech you mean? 🙄
Perhaps you're thinking of a different 1930s Germany?
