Fairisle jumpers

I met up with an old school friend for a drink last night. When I took my coat off and she saw my jumper she burst out laughing and said "you're a bit late, aren't you?" I didn't have a clue what she was on about and asked her what she meant. She said "those jumpers are only meant to be worn at Christmas time". What? Is she right? It wasn't like it had a picture of a Christmas tree or a reindeer on it. I wouldn't mind but I bought 3 different Fairisle jumpers in the sales this year and she's put me right off them now.

Absolute bullshit. Wear away at it while the weather is still cold.

LightDrizzle · 16/02/2025 13:42

How rude!

They are a classic that has has a recent boost in popularity. I’d assume she’s not the sharpest and let it pass.

SewingBees · 16/02/2025 13:43

I'm wearing one right now, in the pub, and two people have complimented me.

DoverWight · 16/02/2025 13:44

I love mine and am wearing it today as it's so cosy. Ignore her.

scanni · 16/02/2025 13:45

I guess I'm not so sharp then, I associate them with Christmas time, well December anyway.

RaininSummer · 16/02/2025 13:45

She is a silly person. They are for any time it's cold.

RoastPotatoConnoisseur · 16/02/2025 13:47

I wear them through the entire autumn and winter period.
Someone at work commented on my collection of 'Christmas' jumpers the other day and I quickly corrected them saying they are fairisle and therefore not limited to December!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 16/02/2025 13:53

I have several. Wear them all year round..They make a good substitute Christmas jumper in December, but they are great all year round..

Bimblesalong · 16/02/2025 13:54

They are classics and can be worn whenever we want. I knit my own now and frequently receive lovely comments on them. Photo attached of a hat and mittens I have recently worked on.

I just see them as winter jumpers! I think they are really lovey. Ignore her!

LatteLady · 16/02/2025 14:03

She obviously was not at Unravel at Farnham Maltings this weekend! Fair Isle knits are for all year round, their popularity was enhanced when Edward VIII took to wearing them to play golf... and I doubt he only did that in December. They are a classic Winter sweater and I will you well to wear your's!

diddl · 16/02/2025 14:10

There's snow in my garden.

Can I still wear mine??

myfavouritemutant · 16/02/2025 14:12

The trouble is a lot of Christmas jumpers have adopted the fairisle style. But that doesn’t mean fairisle is a Christmas jumper! Some people don’t seem to realise that they’re a winter knit that was around long before Christmas jumpers became a thing.

ThingsgetbetterwithalittlebitofRazzmatazz · 16/02/2025 14:14

I feel like it ought to be a protected term. But yes a fairisle style jumper can be worn whenever you are cold enough to wear one.

EggandStress · 16/02/2025 14:16

They're a winter classic.

PotatoBreadForTheWin · 16/02/2025 14:23

I'm wearing mine today, definitely not a Christmas thing

Fjordland · 16/02/2025 14:24

They are very stylish and have been for many years and are particularly popular again at the moment. Fair isle knitted vests were particularly popular too in the 1930s & 1940s, so also a very retro and vintage look. Tell her to watch All Creatures Great and Small and she’ll see them there and not just in the Christmas Special, she’s obviously not got great fashion knowledge and is maybe a little rude. Christmas jumpers are a completely different thing.

QuickCat · 16/02/2025 14:30

This is everything that's wrong with our society. The idea of clothing specifically designed to be worn for one day/week/month of the year. FFS. Do not submit to this nonsense from your friend. Wear the jumper of your choice when it's cold and then wear it for many years thereafter!

CatteryCatss · 16/02/2025 14:33

I too associate them with Winter time. There’s no issue with wearing them in February. They’re classics!

Snowmanscarf · 16/02/2025 14:38

There are some fairisle jumpers which have a more Christmassy look, but they are classic winter jumpers which have had a (non-Christmas) revival recently. I have three!

Marylou2 · 16/02/2025 14:41

Wearing one right now. With matching socks. She's mad. I love fairisle.

Purplturpl · 16/02/2025 14:45

i wear all winter long as I love them. I do wonder if people think I am wearing Christmas jumper though and sounds like they might well do

TheChosenTwo · 16/02/2025 14:46

I associate them with Christmas but wouldn’t bat an eyelid at someone wearing them on a winters day!

Keepsmiling2948 · 16/02/2025 14:52

I’ve just packed two for a week away. I wear them all the time in the colder months. That’s exactly what they are for in my opinion.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 16/02/2025 15:11

I've got a gorgeous green and cream one and first wore it in November at work, got lots of Christmas jumper comments. Puts me off wearing it now tbh
