Someone find me a surname

Brunocatmon · 15/02/2025 22:33

I want a new surname. I'm divorced and my exh said he doesn't want me using his name.
Thinking about it for a a couple of years I don't want to use it so I'd like a new one.
I'd like a Swedish surname and it has to start with a W as I have a personalised car number plate 🙈
Preferable 2 or 3 syllables and pronunciation would help.

I've googled and got some in my list.

Anyone got any fun suggestions?

How about pissing your exh off with the Swedish word for freedom😃

Frihet
Derivation: The name Frihet is derived from the Swedish word frihet, meaning “freedom” or “liberty.”

Since this is a thread about a Swedish name, the biggest car branding failure every has to have been the Honda Jazz, which was going to be launched as the "Honda Fitta". They had printed marketing materials and everything - in Sweden the slogan was "the Fitta, small on the outside but roomy on the inside".
Yeah, you've guessed it, in Swedish Fitta is the vulgar word for the female private parts. Basically the c-word. Also turned out it wasn't a great name to use in much of Southern Europe either, for other reasons. So it became the Honda Jazz in Europe and the Fit in other parts of the world.

Oh my, so much to learn this evening. 😁

Since 2017 a Swedish person can indeed pick “Wahlgren” if they want - or any other surname borne by at least 2,000 people in Sweden - because such surnames are deemed common enough that they don’t imply an association witn any particular family.

Edited

I didn't know that, that's interesting!

JessyCarr · 16/02/2025 00:23

OP how about another angle on this - looking at places or themes that have been most meaningful in your life. Is there a place somewhere (a town, a lake, a mountain) that has positive associations, or a hobby or passion that could provide inspiration? A favourite animal or bird? I went to school with a girl whose surname was Swan - she was naturally graceful and gorgeous, and it seemed such an apt name!

You are correct that I don't know him. Sadly my mum died when I was very young so I couldn't find out about him. I've always felt a bit rootless so was looking for something that would belong to me ( ie my heritage rather than the person if you see what I mean )

Sorry to hear that, and I can see where you're coming from.

If you were interested in finding out more about your origins you could take an Ancestry test, if you felt comfortable with it.

I just google translated that, and it says it is Butcher/Slaughterer of the Rose Cross. Sounds much nicer in French so long as you don't know the meaning!

Either google is wrong or the name is wrong.

Bouchier De Croix Rois

Butcher is boucher, not bouchier
De croix rois doesn't really mean anything but if you translate it literally it'd be "of the cross kings".

(cross as in the roman torture device, not cross as in angry).

spectacularly misses point of thread

(I don't recommend that for your new name btw 😂)

I am on ancestry. I did a test last summer. So far, 2 first cousins have turned up on my fathers side.

Wood or Wilson

JessyCarr · 16/02/2025 00:52

First cousins! It’s rare to get matches that close.

If you look on the DNA drop-down menu under “origins” and then select the tab “journeys”, it should help you zone into where exactly in Sweden your paternal heritage lies. Might be of interest.

Turns out they are siblings, neither knows their father but we think our fathers may be brothers.

I read aeons ago that Swedish people were invited to invent new surnames for themselves as there were so few surnames in use . Especial encouragement was given to new names that reflected their careers in modern industry.

As you have a personalised plate, Wanker would work.

Brilliant 😂

This is a great thread with something for everyone. An interesting topic from an honest and open poster with valid reasons for her choice, some great info on car branding and a few humourous additions. Love the 'oh Wienna' comment!

Swedish surname beginning with W? I would suggest Westling - it's easy to spell and pronounce in English and presumably Swedish and is the pre-marriage surname of Prince Daniel who is married to Crown Princess Victoria. He was a regular but successful guy with his own gym when he became Victoria's personal trainer and then married her.

My mother was brought up with foster carers in the 40s so no family roots and her connection to her children as her only biological family was strong. Your ex is an arse for trying to say it's not your name that you share with your children and that you should find another one. Having said that, by using your heritage to find a new one that you will love, you are giving him a great FU.

Notellinganyone · 16/02/2025 08:24

Westerlund is nice and people in the UK would cope with it too.

Why don't you get your dna done from Ancestry ?
That way a lot of the names in matches will be Swedish or you might find a close relative to your father .

Thorfin?

I love both 'Ghosts' series and I particularly love Thor.
