What’s the point in Nespresso machines?

Boymum2019 · 15/02/2025 21:24

Hi all. I might be sounding really silly here, I hope I’m missing something so please let me know :). Myself and my husband treated ourselves to a Nespresso Vertuo machine this weekend. So from what I’ve read so far, to make just a standard latte/cappuccino for example you’d need a double espresso pod then you’d need to heat milk up in a separate vessel and then add. Is that correct? If so I’m struggling to see the point of the machine. Surely it’s more convenient to just make a regular coffee with a kettle, or buy another machine where you press a button and it’s done? If this is the case I’m assuming it’s all about the quality with Nespresso as oppose to convenience? TIA :)

*the milk frother I mean

TimeForATerf · 15/02/2025 22:46

I’m on my second, and I love it. I have the original style one though so you can use rip off pods and I heat my milk in a jug then pout it onto the Nespresso (or rip off) shot, it’s lovely.

mines a really cheap basic model.

Boymum2019 · 15/02/2025 22:47

Thanks all! I have a milk frother so will try with that :) might give black coffees a try too :). @Talipesmum i wasn’t complaining I was merely asking for advice or if there was something I’d missed :).

I love my Nespresso machines. I used to have a proper Gaggia espresso machine but it was such a faff and messy too. I bought a Nespresso back in 2010 and never looked back. I drink probably 4-5 coffees most days so it’s a great time saver over any other method. I’ve had the whizzy milk frother attachment things but can’t be doing with cleaning them so I just warm up some milk in the microwave in a mug!

Yeah sorry I did sound a bit snarky!
We’ve used cafetière coffee for years and really like it, but it’s nice being able to have a small strong coffee with half a cup of hot milk, sort of flat white style (not a barista don’t come at me!). Plus you get a bit of a crema which you don’t from a cafetière. It’s a lot quicker than cafetière too, though obv only a small difference really.

We deliberately didn’t want to get one with the milk attachments because I knew I’d be freaking out about cleaning out the milky pipes or something. Just wanted to do the milk ourselves, froth it with a hand held whizzer thing, and add to the coffee.

I agree.

I think it's seen as a status/snob thing. It's very much a yuppy, trendy, etc fad thing.

I can buy 2 kg of coffee for £20 at Makro/Booker... works out to be about 250-300 cups. You're looking at £1 per pod on Amazon. I'm sure there are cheaper ones out there, but even a third of that price is ludicrous.

Personally, I think people who buy them are idiots with the added distain of being massively environmentally harmful.

How do you get 250 cups of coffee out of 2kg?

Or is it instant?

dutysuite · 15/02/2025 23:02

I’ve had various pod machines over the years but have always been disappointed with them, so I just use a cafetiere.

Nespresso vertuo aren't just espressos. You can buy the full mug size of pods too. The size of the drink it'll produce is stated on the app or website - some are espresso and some are mug.

Happyearlyretirement · 15/02/2025 23:14

Have had the lot Nespresso pods, made my own pods, old style hob Nespresso maker, kitchen aid and Kenwoid Nespresso but I am taking to the grave my Smeg, it’s 5 years old and absolutely brilliant, no issues whatsoever.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 15/02/2025 23:32

Grind coffee pods are compostable! So there’s not a big environmental waste if you use those ! They fit the nespresso machines too (not those new ones with the different shape pods)

Talipesmum · 15/02/2025 23:35

We recycle our pods with https://www.podback.org - collect a big bag full then take it to our local morrisons.

AnSionnachGlic · 15/02/2025 23:43

I have the Nespresso vertuo lattissima and love it. I also have the Sage drip carafe type one which I use at weekends when there are few having coffee together. But for daily use, I can't beat the ease and taste of popping a pod into my Nespresso and having a steamy, frothy mug of coffee with no waste.

Rainingalldayonmyhead · 15/02/2025 23:44

Horrible awful things. So much waste and those pods are awful. Get a proper coffee machine that grinds the beans and makes coffee that way. No more expensive but better coffee and environmentally much better.

‘They are designed to withstand the high pressures of the coffee-making process. According to Halo, 56 Billioncoffee pods will go into landfill each year. This is around 29,000 every minute. Each pod takes around 500 years to decompose, which is 100 years longer than single use plastic bottles…!’.

Awful awful awful/

Feelingstrange2 · 15/02/2025 23:47

I drink black espresso and double espresso.

A small old style pod nespresso machine is perfect for it.

If I'm serving a larger coffee I'd use a cafetiere. The machines aren't so useful then, although still OK if it's a long black for one.

Once you are poncing about with milk too, agreed, it all gets too much hassle

tillyandmilly · 15/02/2025 23:50

I love my nespresso coffee machine - I have 1 shot - with half oatmilk in mug - and sugarfree hazelnut syrup

Thanks for sharing the link. I only have one coffee a day but great to be able to recycle the pods easily.

You’re welcome. Hope there’s somewhere near you to collect them. The bags are quite large - more or less the size of a normal carrier bag from a shop - so it takes ages to fill one up!

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 16/02/2025 00:00

I have both styles of machine - an original in my office and a vertuo in my kitchen. I also have a dishwasher friendly Aeroccino milk jug.
Not sure if it’s a Canada specific thing, but we get pre-paid bags with our capsule deliveries and all pods and sent back for recycling.

wandawaves · 16/02/2025 00:05

I have one and love it. I have the seperate milk thing.
The pods get sent back for recycling.

Mossstitch · 16/02/2025 00:09

I love mine, on my third as I use it so much I wear them out, so quick and convenient. I find if you heat up a third of a cup of skimmed milk in the microwave then add the coffee that the froth (I know its called crema but that sounds pretentious😏) is sufficient to be almost like a cappuccino without extra washing up, more milk if you want latte.☕️

Moonshine5 · 16/02/2025 00:10

Love mine, currently obsessing over Costa Rica. I'm a black coffee person!!

Boymum2019 · 15/02/2025 21:41

Thanks everyone. I just wasnt sure if I missing something like a milk compartment or something haha. But makes sense now :).

Edited

I think from what you're saying you might be better with a dulce gusto that takes all different pods possibly with the milk included, not just espresso.
We had one of those for years, but the pods just seemed to change and weren't as nice, they are better than instant, but not as good as coffee shops.
We finally treated ourselves to a posh De'Longhi integrated milk bean to cup coffee machine. Best thing we have ever purchased, and we haven't bought a take out coffee in months. We can make our own better, and literally at the touch of a button!

Ahsheeit · 16/02/2025 00:41

Got a compatible one from Aldi recently, which are now down to £20. L'Or espresso pods are a tenner for 40 in b&m.

Awful awful awful/

Nespresso pods are made of aluminium which is infinitely recyclable. Ours go to recycling not landfill. 4 pods a day is the aluminium equivalent of 4 tin cans a month. I don't hear anyone saying 'awful awful awful' about tinned tomatoes or soup?
