Why on earth are Farage and Reform so popular ?

Nonamenoblame · 13/02/2025 19:36

Their ideology is essentially heated up Thatcherism, more deregulation (if that’s possible) and laissez faire light touch for businesses, more cuts to public services because they love an even smaller state, cuts to benefits apart from those for pensioners, no real solution to the immigration issue apart from sinking the small boats.
So why isn’t Farage being challenged ? Everywhere you read that Farage is the next PM in waiting but his policies are a rerun of the last 14 years but worse, they haven’t worked so far, why would they work with a Reform government ? What’s an even worse thought is a Tory/Reform coalition, are we as country daft enough to fall for it ?
And how long would we give a Reform government to turn things around ? 6 months, a year ?

That’s an opinion

yyou asked who was left

coilition is different from lib dem conservatives government, even so. As for Lib Dem breaking their promise - what was it?

They lied about abolishing tuition fees.

Yes it is an opinion, well done you spotted it!

Your question wasn’t conserving your opinion 🤷‍♀️

I watched an interview today of a Hotel owner who was offered DOUBLE his yearly income from the Government to fire his entire staff and allow a yearly rolling contract to have his hotel housing 300 illegal immigrants. In a small village, the Gov wanted the entire staff laid off and the hotel to be off bounds to tourists, which would not only make unemployment skyrocket in the small village but they would lose the income locally that tourists generate. Damaging local businesses.

He declined and was absolutely incredulous that the Gov wanted to house illegal immigrants in a 5 star, CASTLE with 4 poster beds.

We can't help our own homeless but we can put illegals in castles ?

He also noted that all staff would be private Gov employees and that the entire population would be young males.

Once again, if they are fleeing war WHERE ARE THE WOMEN AND CHILDREN??

My answer to you was.

sankacoolrunnings · 13/02/2025 20:40

Because the main political parties have let them down.

I don't think Reform will ever get in or make proper progress unless they get a Tory heavyweight to join and they need wider ranging policies.

But Farage is intelligent and knows exactly what holes to pick at. If the other parties actually listened to public sentiment they wouldn't have this problem.

Portakalkedi · 13/02/2025 20:40

Many are fed up with the two main parties and our chappy system in general, where one party is elected, does this which next lot undo, and nothing much ever progresses. Not sure I'd vote for Reform but I can see the appeal of something different.

username299 · 13/02/2025 20:41

Because of people like Musk and Twitter pushing a far right agenda. If you keep repeating the same things over and over again, people believe them.

People think that if you close the borders, we'll be a land of milk and honey. They trust Farage even though he lied to get Brexit and his manifesto isn't worth the paper it's written on.

He's not an alternative, he's worse.

Lottapianos · 13/02/2025 20:42

'What’s an even worse thought is a Tory/Reform coalition, are we as country daft enough to fall for it ?'

Well, yes. 100%. I wouldn't bet against Farage becoming PM one day, much as that sickens me. I laughed my head off years ago when I heard that Boris Johnson was running for London Mayor and look how that all turned out

I don't blame anyone for being sick to death of the main political parties, but they really need their heads examined if they think that Farage and his lot are the answer. They wouldn't piss on any of us if we were on fire

EmmaMaria · 13/02/2025 20:42

People are struggling and they are unhappy. They have two options - do something about it or blame someone else. Most people choose the latter because it is the easiest option, and people are intrinsically lazy. Farage and Reform offer them people to blame. Ergo, now you don't even have to bother thinking about who is to blame because Nigel and his ilk will tell you. The fact that if you removed all of his "targets" things would still be the same doesn't occur to people, and Nigel would just find another target. It's called stupidity populism.

The less intelligent among us love a bit of snake oil.

frenchnoodle · 13/02/2025 20:43

For what it's worth the whole system will eventually collapse in on itself. It's better to accept we are on the final chapter and roll with it.

Why another thread about this

I think the post after yours explains what the OP was after perhaps.
Like so many threads that get started on the same subject - previously it was trans issues with huge amounts of bots telling us we are all ignorant, now it's Israli propaganda threads and men on the relationship forum trying to convince us not to check our partners media because that is worse than them cheating/paying for prostitutes/using AI to create porn of everyone they know.

I honestly wonder why I come on here half the time, I so often wonder if I am the only real person on here.

This was two years ago under the previous government. I don't know why it's suddenly a GB News TikTok now.

Elon Musk (currently dismantling US democracy) supports Reform. That tells you all you need to know about Reform.

Abhannmor · 13/02/2025 20:47

Farage is on record many years ago saying the NHS should be sold off. Thatcher never went that far of course. I'm sure there's a cohort of the British people who agree with him.

Then again he said Liz Truss' and Kwasi Kwarteng's budget was the best since 1987. Likewise there are people in Reform and the Tories who think she was an unsung hero , who was just misunderstood. But are there enough of such people to carry him into no 10? Perhaps if he deigned to visit Westminster occasionally....

Because they listen and represent what a lot of people think.
The majority are fed up with the damage the main 2 parties have done to this country and want change. I'm one of them.

Absolutely this.

Viviennemary · 13/02/2025 20:48

Because Labour has been awful so far. Tories even worse. Lib Dems not worth a mention. That's why.
