Why on earth are Farage and Reform so popular ?

Nonamenoblame · 13/02/2025 19:36

Their ideology is essentially heated up Thatcherism, more deregulation (if that’s possible) and laissez faire light touch for businesses, more cuts to public services because they love an even smaller state, cuts to benefits apart from those for pensioners, no real solution to the immigration issue apart from sinking the small boats.
So why isn’t Farage being challenged ? Everywhere you read that Farage is the next PM in waiting but his policies are a rerun of the last 14 years but worse, they haven’t worked so far, why would they work with a Reform government ? What’s an even worse thought is a Tory/Reform coalition, are we as country daft enough to fall for it ?
And how long would we give a Reform government to turn things around ? 6 months, a year ?

Because the Conservatives and the Labour party have spent decades pissing the electorate off by offering two different narratives and the same bloody policies.

I saw voting intention polls today that had them on 29% - that's crazy, almost 30% of people willing to throw the towel in with our established parties and I don't think that will change unless some growth per capita and an improvement in living standards.

Because they listen and represent what a lot of people think.
The majority are fed up with the damage the main 2 parties have done to this country and want change. I'm one of them.

They listen alright. And then they manipulate.

If you require manipulation, they are the part for you.

It’s the blame game, keep telling them that the problem is y when all the time the problem is underfunding, underpaid and instead of more funding, higher pay they believe the problem is y. Of course the problem is not y and the problem doesn’t go away

Herewegoagain29 · 13/02/2025 20:24

Because the Conservatives promised to lower the pace of immegration and then after Brexit put it up to record levels.
They also failed to take a stand against gender ideology. There was less and less talent in the party and they were rightly kicked out.
They lost the respect of their voter base and it's gone too far to get back trust, so Farage has moved into their space.

Yatzydog · 13/02/2025 20:29

Reform are like brexit: sounds like a good idea until it happens.

Also brexit was just a vague glowly notion that enabled leavers to imagine their own outcome. Reform's policies are similar.

Reform's support comes from the politically unengaged or those with a poor understanding/relationship with economic reality.

The working and middle classes will be way more fucked under reform than Labour.

Just look around your local town.

At what?

cuts to benefits apart from those for pensioners

makes them popular amongst pensioners. Yes not all pensioners, blah, blah, blah.

wipeywipe · 13/02/2025 20:31

Because they listen and represent what a lot of people think.

Reform can't fix the ageing population issue.

frenchnoodle · 13/02/2025 20:15

Because when people feel desperate they do extreme things.
The two main parties have failed most people and coalition didn't work, what's left? 🤷

Green and Lib Dem

wipeywipe · 13/02/2025 20:33

See I do actually think MOST reform supporters wouldn't consider themselves racist. But I'm not sure they've really thought through what lower taxes means. Because what it WILL mean is less money for housing / the NHS / disability benefits / green economy/ schooling. But the rich business owners will be able to keep more of their profits as there'll be less protection for workers, landlords will benefit and tenants will lose out. Basically the top 1% will be able to cream EVEN MORE odd the rest of us. Is that REALLY what you want for all of our futures?

Many mistakenly think they are the 1% or aspire to be so think they are helping themselves when actually they are making it harder.

TethersMiddle · 13/02/2025 20:33

The problem is are the other politicians any better?

MikeRafone · 13/02/2025 20:34

what have they listen to in Clayton and what has that lead to them doing?

Green and Lib Dem

Lib Dems were part of a coalition which failed to retain the one thing they promised.

The Greens are in an absolute state right now.

NinnyNa · 13/02/2025 20:35

Because people are sick of mass immigration and the pressure it puts on the nations infrastructure?

Seems quite obvious

wipeywipe · 13/02/2025 20:35

You'd think people will have learned after Brexit.

LavenderBlue19 · 13/02/2025 20:36

Because unfortunately Farage has charisma. I don't know how people don't see through him, but for some godforsaken reason he appeals to a certain type of person.

Also, spending absolutely fucktons on propaganda - social media is doing a lot of damage. You can hear it in threads on here - people parroting Farage/Reform sound bites. I noticed it yesterday on a thread about the BBC.

And finally - the state of the country after the Tories decimated the state. People are happy to blame the 'other' rather than privatised public services, Brexit and capitalism.

Germanymunch · 13/02/2025 20:36

They aren't that popular - more people voted for Liberal Democrats, Labour and Conservatives, but because Reform have dubious funding sources they could pay for more media attention to make them "look" popular. It's why Ed Davey had to do all of the stunts to get any attention at all because the media loves to tell us when Farage farts.

MarioSis · 13/02/2025 20:37

Where I live their supporters can hardly spell, live on benefits, and hate foreigners. Reform is right wing Temu style.

frenchnoodle · 13/02/2025 20:37

coilition is different from lib dem conservatives government, even so. As for Lib Dem breaking their promise - what was it?

I think we can safely say that most other politicians are not Nazis, yes.

Rosecoffeecup · 13/02/2025 20:38
