Why on earth are Farage and Reform so popular ?

Nonamenoblame · 13/02/2025 19:36

Their ideology is essentially heated up Thatcherism, more deregulation (if that’s possible) and laissez faire light touch for businesses, more cuts to public services because they love an even smaller state, cuts to benefits apart from those for pensioners, no real solution to the immigration issue apart from sinking the small boats.
So why isn’t Farage being challenged ? Everywhere you read that Farage is the next PM in waiting but his policies are a rerun of the last 14 years but worse, they haven’t worked so far, why would they work with a Reform government ? What’s an even worse thought is a Tory/Reform coalition, are we as country daft enough to fall for it ?
And how long would we give a Reform government to turn things around ? 6 months, a year ?

I'll repeat the point I made upthread:
Reform UK are only as "popular" as they are because they have a not news channel pumping out their shite 18 hours a day.

GBN can't afford 24hours a day, but that's OK because it's not an actual news channel. It's a Reform UK mouthpiece.

I remember you saying last year that you watched GB News daily yourself and enjoyed it!

I've only watched the odd clip myself, plus I'm not a Reform voter - although I would prefer a Conservative/Reform coalition than a Labour government.

why do you think taking future lorries/freight off the road is a waste of money?

10,944 lorries a day

My guess is Brits r worried bout mass migration & Reform r willing to discuss it directly like Trump did, even if you dont like it, public seem 2. Until it's addressed, it'll be the main sticking point overshadowing all other factors

When the Holyhead port was smashed up by the storm the A55 was a lot quieter and there were less accidents. Could just be post Xmas doldrums of course

SerendipityJane · 17/02/2025 17:11

Here is Richard Tice, (Reform MP for Dubai), telling Julie Hartley Brewer what parts of the UK Reform would surrender to Putin when the time comes. At least we now know why he fucked off to Dubai.

JHB is hardly a pinko lefty, by the way.

Enjoy.

I think they only seem popular because the Tories aren't atm.

That's a big part of it. The previous Tory government were such a disaster that the right wing vote in the UK split. Irrevocably.

It was only natural that Reform would fill the gap.

lavenderlou · 17/02/2025 19:09

Things seem negative with no improvements on the horizon so people look for something to blame. The Conservatives and Reform chose immigration as the scapegoat issue. The Tories blamed immigration for years while they were in power but didn't manage to do anything to make the economy or everyday life better.

Maybe Reform needs a term in charge for people to see that they wouldn't make any improvements either. God knows what damage they'd manage to do though. We could be looking at changes to human rights on a level with things happening in the USA. I think how successful the Trump government is seen to be will have an impact on the popularity of Reform.

yes HS2 will transport people from Birmingham to London and visa versa - but its not a simple one job fix. HS2 will also take freight off the roads

But do you genuinely think they can deliver their promises? End the problems with the NHS and slash taxes? It’s just impossible.

Garage says the NHS as it is is unsustainable. He plans to move to a French style service with those who can afford it to pay for treatment on a sliding scale and those who can't afford to pay get it free.

Farage wants to turn the NHS into a US healthcare style system - one of the worst in the world, and the most expensive. If you're not rich you will be screwed.

You posted that Farage 'showed an unhealthy fascination in Adolf Hitler during his school days' - does he still show a fascination with Adolf Hitler?

Still obsessed with race and nationalism.

LastTrainsEast · 17/02/2025 21:31

Stealer · 13/02/2025 19:51

Because some people are thick racist arseholes.

Everyone who disagrees with you is.

And they are all Hitler too.

LastTrainsEast · 17/02/2025 21:41

"Farage and his ilk said the same about Brexit. We will take back control sunlit uplands etc fund the NHS instead. What actually happened ?

Legal migration skyrocketed."

Allowing migration was a choice. Not something caused by no longer being in the EU.

Do you believe that China is forbidden from limiting immigration because they are not in the EU?

The US is putting an end to large scale immigration and they are not in the EU either.

Papyrophile · 17/02/2025 21:47

I don't have a beef with highly skilled, highly paid immigrants. I have a huge objection to low skill low paid immigrants. Force up the lowest paid job rate and lower UC rates so eventually care jobs are financially rewarding.

Farage owns a dog and so did Hitler. It can't be a coincidence!

Nationalism is like putting your family first. Some might say you should let your family go hungry to help others. Especially if you can make sure people see you do it and it earns you praise.

Others will say "I work hard to get the money to feed my family and that's what I'm going to do"

Nationalism is a slippery slope into hell. Farage has no experience in politics, has never held any form of political office and has a proven track record in lying to the point where he has damaged the country’s economy and crashed its international credibility. While doing it, his paymaster has taken money off a despot who is currently trying to crush another country. But hey, he likes a pint and a fag.

He’s a traitor, a liar and bone idle.

"Force up the lowest paid job rate and lower UC rates so eventually care jobs are financially rewarding."

Except many of these workers are being brought in to social care and the NHS, which are publicly funded. Raising pay here would require higher taxes...
