Is everyone's kitchen as hectic as mine? (Photo)

A little bit outing but I wanted to know if people can relate to this hectic kitchen of mine! It gets cleaned and tidied every day but most things I can't seem to store anywhere as have very little storage in my house, but honestly, does this kitchen seem 'normal' or very unorganized, messy, chaotic etc? Because I'm not sure if I'm being overly critical to myself for having a kitchen like this or I do in fact need to seriously organise it better! (The white blob is my son!) For context I have a husband and 3 children aged 13, 7 and 15 months and work part time.

This would give me palpatations.

And me. I absolutely could not live like that.

Weepixie · 13/02/2025 15:22

Op, I have a bin in my kitchen that’s up against a cupboard and not hidden away inside of one. It’s a large bin and we clean into it as we go along. Is that something you could consider?

And the bike? Get your son to put it in the shed and take it out again in the morning. I’m not sure why you’re doing it.

I love your kitchen.
It looks busy, homely and full of love and life.
Mine looked exactly the same when the DCs were younger.

Behind every immaculate house is a very dull woman.

What did you just call my cleaner?!!

It's fine, everything there could be quickly tidied away if needed, it's better than an operating theatre kitchen

mathanxiety · 13/02/2025 15:23

Could you sacrifice the last cabinet and half a cabinet by the door, where the stools are now, and get a stacked washer and dryer plumbed in and vented there? You could use the space beside that under the counter for a laundry bin.

Starlight1984 · 13/02/2025 15:25

Is everyone's kitchen as hectic as mine?

In a word, no. I couldn't live like this.

I get the clutter (to some degree) but what's with the empty wrappers and bottles on the kitchen counter?!

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 13/02/2025 14:10

Sorry no mine is very tidy, only a coffee maker/velvetiser and knife block on the side, has always been like this even when my daughter was small, i can't stand clutter (i blame my mum for collecting so many ornaments when i was young 😂),
I need to be tidy, everything is put away as soon as it's done with, pour cereal into bowl then back in the cupboard, toys/art bits away once finished with etc.
Sides are wiped down every evening (more often if there are spills) and floor hoovered and cleaned every other day almost.
1 child age 8 and we both work full time.

Jesus Christ. I've seen some things on here but making an 8 year old child work full time....?!

Fair play though.

SpidersAreShitheads · 13/02/2025 15:27

Aaah OP there is absolutely no need to “shame yourself”. I actually love your honesty.

If you’re someone who “could never live like that” then well done you.

The reality is that lots of us have moments like this in the kitchen - and OP says the photo was taken when everything had just been chucked in there and it was looking at its worst.

I hate an untidy kitchen, it drives me crazy. But mine absolutely looks like a dumping ground at various points in the day. And then it’s tided later that day and looks lovely. And then it doesn’t again 😂🤷‍♀️

Your kitchen is clean, just a bit messy at that point. Happens to lots of us at various points in the day and it’s just wearisome constantly tidying the bloody place. And as you say, this was at its worst.

Personally, I like the stools. I get the practicality.

Take any ideas from this thread that are useful but be reassured that there are many perfectly lovely households that have kitchens that look like this from time to time.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 13/02/2025 15:29

@Starlight1984 😂 i probably should have reworded that! I swear she doesn't work other than school work

Contraryjane · 13/02/2025 15:30

It’s a tip.

Caspianberg · 13/02/2025 15:31

Is that a back door to garden? Can you put a recycling system right outside if there’s not much space in the kitchen?

I think bike in and out shed son just has to do daily. It’s an extra 5 mins, he will survive

I would move laundry to a bedroom. More likely to fold quicker upstairs also as can fold faster onto your bed for example and Into correct bedroom each evening. I fold much my laundry like this, get small Ds ready for bed, then he plays in his room for 15 mins before bedtime story. Any other time of day I get distracted by other more important stuff.

notatinydancer · 13/02/2025 15:32

@harlacem0507 your husband having a broken collar bone is not a reason for him not to tidy up while you're at work.

Goforyourguns · 13/02/2025 15:33

work tops a bit messy put the butter,, away once used.washing dryiny fine.a bit of a tidy at the end of the day all good.

MH0084 · 13/02/2025 15:33

That would drive me absolute mad. I couldn't cope.
But hey, your house. Your rules.

Caspianberg · 13/02/2025 15:35

And I agree, with a broken collar bone, 6+ weeks ago your dh can help. Sure maybe shouldn’t be lifting heavy stuff, but I’m sure he can use other hand to put an empty bottle in bin or butter in fridge, or tidy 1 year old toys.

Upstartled · 13/02/2025 15:35

Jesus @WildCats24 this is just a woman who owns her own small business about housekeeping - this isn't a Trump backer driving national policies to line their own pockets.

Even if I agreed with your assessment of Trump, do you think it's very democratic to disrupt the living of a women who has a different political opinion to you?

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 13/02/2025 15:35

I couldn’t stand that. It’s awful.

godmum56 · 13/02/2025 15:36

Just wanted to say thank you because you have made me feel better about mine!! I Thought mine was awful till I saw this!! I mean if you don't mind it then what we think is irrelevant but you have got two children who are at an age where they can and should be doing appropriate tidying up after themselves.

Breadcat24 · 13/02/2025 15:38

no sorry not normal. could not prepare food there to messy

failingrocks · 13/02/2025 15:39

Where do you actually eat OP?

popandchoc · 13/02/2025 15:40

No but i always clean up after every meal and also my daughter possibly had ocd so she is always tidying it up.

godmum56 · 13/02/2025 15:40

Your husband still has both legs and one arm and your son can put his damned bike away.

lovingmememe · 13/02/2025 15:42

Id gut the place i like the empty look.

theboffinsarecoming · 13/02/2025 15:42

Haven't rtft so someone else has probably already suggested this, but the bike issue...

On return from school it immediately gets put in the shed by your dc. If they are old enough to ride a bike to and from school, they are old enough to put it away when they come home. Bike helmet gets hung up with coats or kept in dc's room.

In the morning, your dc gets the bike out of the shed ready for school.

Make them responsible for it. If they won't co-operate, lock the bike in the shed so they have to walk to school instead.

Mischance · 13/02/2025 15:42

It looks like a real home to me - I am a retired social worker and felt much happier on home visits to see a home like that than some of the pristine places I visited where I wondered how anyone every had any fun!
