Is everyone's kitchen as hectic as mine? (Photo)

A little bit outing but I wanted to know if people can relate to this hectic kitchen of mine! It gets cleaned and tidied every day but most things I can't seem to store anywhere as have very little storage in my house, but honestly, does this kitchen seem 'normal' or very unorganized, messy, chaotic etc? Because I'm not sure if I'm being overly critical to myself for having a kitchen like this or I do in fact need to seriously organise it better! (The white blob is my son!) For context I have a husband and 3 children aged 13, 7 and 15 months and work part time.

Good lord, I could never live like this. I’m sure it’s not always like that op.

gataudahpusing · 13/02/2025 18:37

believe me, that's still so tidy compared to my parents' kitchen haha!

My kitchen is cleaned to perfection every evening. By the time I get home from work it looks like yours. It's relentless.

yep

Thanks so much for the advice and honest opinions! It didn't even occur to me to get rid of the stools, I mean it's more seating for everyone as there are 5 of us plus people in and out (kids friends, I do try a speed clean!) I don't have a tumble dryer and quite frankly wish I did as the airer/clothes get me down the most it's constant with the clothes.

Ugh the bike, I know! Well my OH doesn't want it in the garden as it'll get rusty, it can go in the shed but my son uses to go to school every day and I don't have the time to be rushing to go the shed each morning and night

But why would that be your job instead of your son's?

stayathomegardener · 13/02/2025 18:40

Everyone has different standards, the first image looks like it could be improved very quickly just by recycling and piling dishes up in the sink. .
However the second image of your cat with paws and bottom on the dining table fills me with horror.

Tbf anyone managing 3 kids and surviving is doing well.

enkelt2 · 13/02/2025 18:40

OP it's pretty tidy tbh!! Whatever makes you comfortable, really!

no. no its not.

DGPP · 13/02/2025 18:48

3 kids here. Absolutely par for the course when they were little. It’s bloody hard work. Has improved as they’ve got older.
ignore everyone judging and delete the thread

bumblingbovine49 · 13/02/2025 18:53

Mine might look like that temporarily after we have made and eaten dinner depending on who cooked and what we ate etc but the dishwasher is always loaded and surface cleared awaty/cleaned with the floor swept, before we go to bed, always . Well unless the household is all ill or something

HuckleberryBlackcurrant · 13/02/2025 18:54

Mine honestly looks like that most of the time minus the bike. I have 3 kids and I'm messy as well.

theboffinsarecoming · 13/02/2025 16:53

It sure is.

Cue a whole stream of people pearl-clutching about anyone who allows cats on the kitchen table.😂

Or pictures of their own cats on kitchen work surfaces.
🤣

I do love your kitchen @harlacem0507 but maybe you need the help of an organiser.
🤣

SnoopysHoose · 13/02/2025 18:59

Gorgeous cat , bike shouldn't be there that's a pain and the wheels are bringing dirt in.
Involve the older kids in tidying.
Surely your DH can help? that's a long time to be off with a collarbone break.

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 13/02/2025 13:44

I tripped over just looking at that picture

Without sounding rude and I do apologise if it sounds this way, but you could have had a good half hour having a tidy round or just putting bits in the bin within the time it's taken to log in here, post and reply to us

Bbq1 · 13/02/2025 19:02

I didn't say it was functional. I'd already commented upthread that it was v messy and looked like things were just left where they'd dropped and the lid left off the butter wasn't good, empty bottles lying around. However, I think "disgusting" and "dangerous" is Ott. It just needs sorting and cleaning as they go.

Supersimkin7 · 13/02/2025 19:04

Beautiful cat. Have you seen
him recently?

Unclench OP - surface clutter never killed anyone. Bin bag, don’t stop moving till
it’s full. Dishwasher filled. Wipe.

KittenPause · 13/02/2025 19:04

I think when the meds is made by everyone else around you it's really difficult to keep up

KittenPause · 13/02/2025 19:04

Mess not meds

Oh heavens, behave!
It isn't tidy. At all.

But it only matters if it's bothering the OP. I'm very neat and tidy even if I do let my cat sit on the work surface
and I wouldn't be able to survive in a kitchen that was like the OP's.

harlacem0507 · 13/02/2025 15:00

Oh god I wish I could but there's zero room! Does my head in. The only one that has space is my 13 year old she had the biggest room and I refuse to saddle her with that monstrosity. It's actually a heated airer from John lewis it was not cheap and I thought hey it's heated it'll mean it's put away every night and it's not, it's constantly up because I'm constantly doing laundry and trying to dry it all

Dont your clothes smell of cooking?
I'm sorry Op but looking at that kitchen gave me anxiety.
A bike!
So many trip hazards
What if you had a hot pan on and tripped over the bike?
It's so dangerous

scrivette · 13/02/2025 19:14

Mine is smaller but pretty similar. I tidy it but it's messy again very soon and there is hardly any storage.

I wouldn't let the bike in though but only because it's another big thing to trip over!

Oodlesandoodlesofnoodles · 13/02/2025 19:22

I imagine everyone on Mumsnet has a massive kitchen that cost tens of thousands of pounds, with an island in the middle and a cleaner.

WonderingWanda · 13/02/2025 19:27

Mine can get a bit cluttered when I'm cooking as we don't have much space. Also my teenage kids use the table as a dumping ground. I don't think it takes long for it to become a mess but I do try to tidy up every night and I have the luxury of a shed for the bikes and a conservatory for the drying rack.

I would think about getting a bike cover and lock if you have any outdoor space. The rest just needs a tidy.

Daftypants · 13/02/2025 19:29

It does look messy but if the bike and helmet can go elsewhere, the toys too and if the clothes airer maybe can stand in an upstairs hallway ?
a good tidy up would not take too long at all , looks like empty plastic bottles and cans that can be rinsed and popped in the recycling ♻️

Tryonemoretime · 13/02/2025 19:29

I'm a bit of a neat freak, so tend to clear up as i go along....My clothes airer is jammed in our bath overnight so it's out of the way. The bike? I'd get a cheap plastic cover from Amazon and put the covered bike outside by the back door.
