Is everyone's kitchen as hectic as mine? (Photo)

A little bit outing but I wanted to know if people can relate to this hectic kitchen of mine! It gets cleaned and tidied every day but most things I can't seem to store anywhere as have very little storage in my house, but honestly, does this kitchen seem 'normal' or very unorganized, messy, chaotic etc? Because I'm not sure if I'm being overly critical to myself for having a kitchen like this or I do in fact need to seriously organise it better! (The white blob is my son!) For context I have a husband and 3 children aged 13, 7 and 15 months and work part time.

Why is there a bike in your kitchen?

Apart from that, it looks pretty normal to me. A bit messy but would take literally a few mins to tidy and then it would look fine.

Newstartplease24 · 13/02/2025 13:42

I couldn’t stand that. Why are there so many things out on surfaces? Are you drinking Pepsi right now or can you do something with those? Why is a big plastic bottle lying down ? Just two examples but that’s not having no storage, that’s not clearing as you go. If it’s just after dinner and you’ve been on the go all day, I get it, but that means someone needs to blitz it before bed, not that it’s just like that

Newstartplease24 · 13/02/2025 13:43

Get your kid to run the clean washing on the table upstairs and then sort the rest of the table. You’d feel so much better

It’s a bit messy there but within the boundaries of normal. Kitchens can go from tidy to bombsite very quickly especially with three young children.

WinterFrog · 13/02/2025 13:43

Mine looked a lot like that when my children were small. I have become much more of a minimalist as we've all got older.

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 13/02/2025 13:44

I tripped over just looking at that picture

Sevenamcoffee · 13/02/2025 13:44

I do try to tidy as I go in the kitchen as it is less likely to get out of hand.

HeadNorth · 13/02/2025 13:45

I feel stressed just looking at that photo! Even when the children were at home, i don't think the kitchen every looked like that - random cans, tipped over bottles, opened packets of cereal, sauce bottles out, dirty plates on the side etc etc. Maybe I was just lucky to have more storage but most of these things I would put away as used, not leave lying on surfaces.

UpUpUpU · 13/02/2025 13:45

I’m pretty lazy but that is a kitchen I couldn’t use or relax in.

I think if you would be embarrassed to have someone pop round and come in then it’s too messy. I absolutely would not let anyone into that kitchen

skellis · 13/02/2025 13:45

I couldn't bear it

Newstartplease24 · 13/02/2025 13:46

The actual kitchen looks nice. But who dropped the Ella’s pouch on the dirty baking tin and is the same person going to have to fish the greasy thing out? Or has someone else dropped it there and thinks you will do it? I just don’t get it. I must be a fascist. I can’t bear it when people just shed things where they fall, it drives me nuts. Tea towel on a hook! Bike helmet on a hook! It’s hardly harder than just dropping the fucking thing!

MsMajeika · 13/02/2025 13:46

very unorganized, messy, chaotic

Sorry but all of the above and my standards are pretty low! There's lots of packaging on the counter that needs to go in the recycling straightaway.

Can you eat on that table? It's a shame if not because it's a great space you've got there!

Nannyfannybanny · 13/02/2025 13:46

Yes,messy and chaotic. I couldn't stand it..if you tidy up daily, how on earth does it get like that in a day! I had 4 DKs, standard 3 bed semi, not a huge amount of storage, worked ft nights (nursing) someone else posted on here, how do you keep the house tidy. Everything goes away a place for everything, everything in its place. We've downsized now, open plan bungalow, little entrance porch shoes in there when we come home, coats hung in coat cupboard. Bags away in wardrobes. I have a tiny kitchen open plan to the end of the living room. I can see it from the sofa,I want it tidy. If I make a cake for instance, sugar, flour, butter, weighed out, everything put straight away, stuff in dishwasher,or soaking in sink. I never let it get messy. My DH thinks it's hilarious that I want it tidy before going out, I don't want to come home to a mess.

Waitingfordoggo · 13/02/2025 13:48

It's a bit hectic but I don't think you should change it JUST because you think other people might have less hectic kitchens! If it is bothering you, then perhaps there are ways to get it more organised. If not then crack on with your chaos!

My kitchen is incredibly tidy but I do have to keep on top of it. It's also big with plenty of storage space which helps. My kids are older teens and while they are both very untidy, it is confined to their own bedrooms so I don't have to see it. I also only work about 15 hours a week so have the luxury of time to keep on top of things.

I get anxious living amongst clutter so keeping things tidy and organised helps my brain.

YellowHatt · 13/02/2025 13:48

You need a “don’t put it down, put it away” mantra in your house. A lot of that chaos could be sorted in seconds/minutes if people did that.

It’s more than I’d be comfortable with.

skellis · 13/02/2025 13:48

I don't believe that was done in a day

harlacem0507 · 13/02/2025 13:49

Thank u for all the honest answers, I knew it deep down but I think I wanted to be shamed into sorting it out. It can look very very tidy and lovely and it's a decent sized kitchen there's more of it around the corner but since having my baby I honestly can't be bothered but I hate living like this!

Ours looks like that if DH or the DCs have been cooking as none of them o
put away as they go (I do as I can't work on a cluttered counter). They are also terrible for slinging hoodies and coats over the backs of chairs and leaving them there. But it wouldn't be left like that overnight.

Fawn87 · 13/02/2025 13:50

No. Mine has a bit of clutter but not like that. But it looks like there's dirty dishes, food left out and rubbish left on the side. Things that can be quickly sorted. Is it always like that?

Cattery · 13/02/2025 13:50

Sorry but 😱

FunnysInLaJardin · 13/02/2025 13:51

too messy for me. I get that you will have stuff around with 3 kids, but a lot of that could be in cupboards etc

Newstartplease24 · 13/02/2025 13:51

That kitchen table is a classic “hot spot” / it’s become unusable because everyone in the family has egged each other on to just think it’s accepting dump stuff there. It needs to be tidied to zero do that you can enforce not dumping crap on it . Going from one thing to two seems like nothing and then it’s 250 things and you can never eat at the table again. Make it zero and object next time someone tries to put a bike helmet on it, or not out the feral box away

TheHeadOfTheHouse · 13/02/2025 13:52

Sorry but that kitchen is a state.

nobody I know has a kitchen like that.

Maggiemargherita · 13/02/2025 13:52

My mates kitchen is like this and she came from a home where her mum ironed knickers.
she’s super busy and is such an amazing, present and organised mum . Her kids are amazimg and her kitchen is such a chatty, warm and chaotic space, I really admire her. There’s a time for minimalism, it’ll come.

DollopOfFun · 13/02/2025 13:53

That looks like an 'Identify the Potential Hazards' picture quiz from one of my employers Health & Safety refresher courses 😀
