Hi,

Just curious as to when you started sitting in the front passenger seat when you go out as a family, after having a baby?

Obviously it's different if you're actually driving. But for those that don't drive/allow someone else to drive - when did you start sitting in the front passenger seat again?

DD is 14 months and I sit in the back together but I do sometimes miss sitting in the front with my partner as I feel as though the 'room mate' phase has extended to car journeys too.

Not sure if I'm being selfish but just curious!

Never! Get back in the front girl!

This is classic mumsnet, everyone acting like this is odd, I have a 4 month old and one of us sits in the back with her if possible. Also everyone else I know with babies does the same!

Absolute rubbish!

I was the driver- so barring sitting with baby in the back of the taxi coming home from the birth, she always sat alone in the back - the exception being when we went on longer drives dh would sit in the back just for distractions and songs and whatnot but that was when she was 12m plus.

Ilovelowry · 12/02/2025 16:18

I only sat in the back once when DC both puked age 3&5.

Otherwise never. That's what nursery rhymes on the radio are for.

Caravaggiouch · 12/02/2025 16:19

I don’t find it remotely odd. DD was often car sick as a baby and then toddler and it was easier to be in the back with her in case of sick bags etc being needed. She’s 6 now and I still sometimes sit in the back next to her so it’s easier for us to chat and means DH can concentrate on driving. Obviously if I had 2+ children I wouldn’t have been, maybe that’s why so many people are aghast at the thought.

I dont think it's odd to do it, I just answered the question - I don't do it.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 12/02/2025 16:19

My friend's son is 9. I'll let you know when she stops sitting in the back with him...

mynameiscalypso · 12/02/2025 16:19

I always sit in the back and my DS is 5. We don't have a car so are either in a taxi, in which case it's standard to sit in the back, or have hired a car on holiday. DS generally vomits on every car journey that's more than 10 mins long so I spend a lot of time holding sick bags for him. I'm sure he could do it by himself but being carsick is grim and so he likes to have me there.

HundredPercentUnsure · 12/02/2025 16:19

Only in the back for the journey home from hospital with baby 1! With baby 2 I never did as we had 2 car seats in the back so no space for an adult in the back.

BigFatLiar · 12/02/2025 16:21

Twins so with two in the back there wasn't a lot of room. When we went out using DHs car (bigger than mine) I'd sometimes squeeze in the back with them just because.

Olika · 12/02/2025 16:26

I sit in the back with DD 2y10m but it doesn't bother my DH or I.

TickingAlongNicely · 12/02/2025 16:27

Don't you ever go in the car with them alone?
Do you think they feel neglected then?

I did for the first few days. Saying that, with DD2 there wasn't space, as toddler in the back as well.

I understand the extra anxiety the CMPA brings though.

ringmybe11 · 12/02/2025 16:29

I still sit in the back with DS who's 2.5! Our cars are pretty comfy though and there's plenty of space. If we had a small car I'd be in the front

I don’t know a single person that does this so not “classic Mumsnet”

gollyimholly · 12/02/2025 16:30

Whichever parent isn't driving sits in the back with DD and she is almost 2. I think we did this from when she was quite young because she didn't like being in her car seat and would cry a lot. That's not the case anymore and I guess we do it out of habit and haven't thought about it! Might try sit up front next time though and see how it goes!

Oh goodness me, this post is the very definition of PFB. You’ll look back on this one day and laugh OP.

Absolutely this.
Maybe first car journey or occasionally if baby was upset on a longer journey etc, but no, both parents in front of car.

BotterMon · 12/02/2025 16:32

Why on earth would you sit in the back?

ImthatBoleyngirl · 12/02/2025 16:33

Straight away, but then I was driving myself, usually by myself cos DH was at work. It never occured to me that I should be sitting in the back.

NeverHadHaveHas · 12/02/2025 16:34

Have been parenting for 15 years, have come across a hell of a lot of parents and have never met a parent who has sat in the back with their child.

mynameiscalypso · 12/02/2025 16:36

I honestly had no idea that I was such an outlier to always sit in the back!

ethelredonagoodday · 12/02/2025 16:37

TheFormidableMrsC · 12/02/2025 15:47

I never sat in the back. I did have a mirror though that meant I could see baby in the rear facing seat.

This!

MrsSunshine2b · 12/02/2025 16:38

Uh, when we left the hospital.

daphneorvelma · 12/02/2025 16:38

I never stopped – always sat in the front!

Edenmum2 · 12/02/2025 16:40

Just from the hospital, like PP said it never occurred to me
