Hi,

Just curious as to when you started sitting in the front passenger seat when you go out as a family, after having a baby?

Obviously it's different if you're actually driving. But for those that don't drive/allow someone else to drive - when did you start sitting in the front passenger seat again?

DD is 14 months and I sit in the back together but I do sometimes miss sitting in the front with my partner as I feel as though the 'room mate' phase has extended to car journeys too.

Not sure if I'm being selfish but just curious!

Total fucking madness.

Wow, hyperbolic much.

butteredparsnip · 13/02/2025 13:37

If there were 2 adults in the car one of us sat in the back until DD was around a year I think, around then she got much more settled in the car but up until then needed lots of resettling so was way easier to be closer to her!

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 13/02/2025 17:50

Breastfeeding a baby whilst the car is being driven is insane!!! The risk of your body being slammed into the head of a baby is just too much!

Fucking hell !! I cannot believe someone actually thinks this is a reasonable thing to do, and think it can be done safely. Jeez!

Totally shocked by the breastfeeding baby in back of a moving car.
I thought I was immune to the crazy things people do on mumsnet, it seems not.

KindLemur · 14/02/2025 00:07

Im also shocked by the amount of toddler that need constant toys books and snacks passing to them on journeys but maybe my child is boring for looking out the window and saying ‘mummy a tree’ 😝

KindLemur · 14/02/2025 00:07

Also my kid isnt eating in the car, unless an emergency, I pay good money for the car to be hoovered and made to look nice I’m not having organix rice cake crumbs all over my back seat

rivalsbinge · 14/02/2025 00:08

I drove! So no sitting in the back for me.. is this even a thing?

Apparently and if you don’t breastfeed your kid in the back seat during any journey lasting over 15 mins you’re a terrible and uninterested parent 😂

Yes, when two parents are travelling together, it is ‘a thing’ - have a read of the thread? 👍🏽

I never sat in the back. Why would I?!

Some babies get exceptionally distressed when in the car. So it can be really helpful if a parent can sit in the back seat and help to soothe them. A few parents have explained this, on the thread 😃

When I left the hospital with each baby. Never sat in the back.

rivalsbinge · 14/02/2025 08:25

@greenorangeo I read the thread. It's still bloody strange and clearly a minority of people do it, wonder if it's a uk only thing?

greenorangeo · 14/02/2025 08:51

I wouldn’t be surprised if there are two ‘camps’ posting here.

The mums who are posting with faux surprise as to why anyone would even consider this, I’m going to guess had babies who weren’t ‘Velcro,’ were happy to be put down to nap in cribs and cots, who didn’t scream blue murder if they were put down or if their mother left the room to go to the loo, and so on.

Then you have the mums who have experienced some or all of the above, and who totally get why yes, of course it makes total sense for one parent to sit in the back with the baby.

You can only parent the baby you have and it would do some posters well to realise that other mums may make different choices to them in order to parent their baby.

KindLemur · 14/02/2025 09:07

When we were younger my cousin was ‘hard work’ he used to insist he sat in the front on all journeys from being about 7… my auntie sat in the back like a child whilst he reclined in the front seat, dropping crumbs and wrappers and choosing what he wanted on the radio was just ridiculous. She used to say ‘oh I don’t mind he likes it in the front’. One day she attempted to get him to sit in the back on the way back from our grandparents house, he kicked off royally saying no, my grandpa went up to him saying you’ll be sat on the roof in a minute now get in the car , he cried his eyes out and my auntie was fuming 🙈🙈🙈

Except that OP is only worried about sitting in the front in case her baby gets lonely.

I never, and still don't, allow my kids to eat in the car when driving. God forbid they started choking whilst you're hurtling down the M1.

This is classic mumsnet, everyone acting like this is odd, I have a 4 month old and one of us sits in the back with her if possible. Also everyone else I know with babies does the same!

Genuinely never heard of this before! It is quite unusual.

Same here. Still a total ban and he’s eight.

Though I guess if you’re in the back with them it’s no problem at all to administer a quick Heimlich manoeuvre while both of you remain securely strapped in…

My dc1 screamed blue murder every time he was in a car seat for a few months but he screamed all the time so as with the other times I just ignored it after a bit. HE would settle down after a few minutes. In fact the more we fussed with him the more annoyed he would get. Turns out he is autistic which makes sense.

Straight away.

This. Odd that you wouldn't.

WhatFreshHellisThese · 14/02/2025 09:35

Straightaway. Zero chance of me sitting in the back!

Shade17 · 14/02/2025 11:03

Neither of us sat in the back from day 1.

I think PP meant about noticing they were choking as choking is silent. You would still have to pull over I assume.

Choking on what?

The food that some people give their children during car journeys.
