Bedroom is full and tight

I have a good sized bedroom. However building up stuff over the years and it's so full.

I did some cleaning last year in the autumn and I learned how to put shelves on the walls and that has helped me so much, thank goodness. However there is still a corner that is so tight. I have a chair there and I have to move it around every day just to get access into my chest of drawers.

I am thinking about making a change. Currently my beside tables are 40cm in width and I have two of them. I am thinking about changing these two bedside tables to something's slimmer. I found an option that is 29 cm in width. It would mean like making approx 22cm of space somewhere in the room and I know that's little in the grand scheme of things.

I wonder would that help. I could rearrange the charge to fit snuggly in a corner at a slant then.

What do you guys think?

Anyone else ever have problems with space. I know cleaning again is probably the only solution but I don't have time yet for a big and deeper spring clean.

Any ideas on how to make more space?

Also last autumn I bought some shelf storage cubes for my bedroom walls and at first I was happy with the work that I did. However one of the shelves, I really wish I used a tall billy bookcase from IKEA instead and I kinda regret the DIY project I did last year. I don't know if I can stomach to redo that work and take down one of the storage shelves.

Can you look at it from the other end? Do you actually need all the stuff? Decluttering may well help a lot.

Can you post a floor plan? What size is the bed and how many people sleep in it?

Declutter

Alwaystired2023 · 12/02/2025 14:13

Agree with declutter, not more storage, you will just have stuff all around you still not very conducive to restful bedroom

Normallynumb · 12/02/2025 14:16

I have the tiniest bedroom in the world
I've got an ikea kids wardrobe and a small double bed, and a narrow oak bedside cabinet with drawers( with mirror above to make a " dressing table
I have some soft wicker cubes ( about 38cm) from H&M for summer clothes and a wooden under bed box for bedding.
Shelf with baskets sounds lovely and similar to what I use in my lounge to give the impression of tidiness!
Could you also fit shelves above your bed or in a corner?
There are cheap foldable cube storage boxes with a padded lid too

username299 · 12/02/2025 14:17

I would get rid off everything but the bare essentials. I bet you don't even sit in the chair. I'd mercilessly declutter, including your drawers and wardrobe. I'd even get rid off the storage.

EarlierDistraction · 12/02/2025 14:17

Why do you need a chair? We've never had one in our bedroom, there isn't space. I stand or sit on the end of the bed to do hair and make-up. We have a couple of hooks on the side of the wardrobe for worn-once clothes that would otherwise go over a chair.

Mightymoog · 12/02/2025 14:20

surely getting rid of the chair is the best bet?

Greenstag · 12/02/2025 14:28

The chair is non negotiable. I will be keeping it. It is a reclining chair. I do use it a lot but then other times it is for putting clothes and stuff on it. I sometimes get acid reflux and sick at night time and the chair has helped me so much. Other times I have some coughing fits and again the chair has helped me so much. I also use it for sitting in and I have a desk that is a lot like a hospital bed that goes from my bed to the chair for working at sometimes too.

The chair is non negotiable.

Yes I know I need to declutter more. I did some decluttering last year and that has helped me but I am not looking forward to doing more of it. I think I will need a whole entire bank holiday weekend to tackle more decluttering.

In all honestly if it's so full you have to move a chair daily to access drawers then your only viable option is to declutter.

decorativecushions · 12/02/2025 14:34

Why do you have so much stuff and a need for so much storage? A bedroom is for sleeping in. You should declutter. Buying 'storage solutions' only encourages people to accumulate more junk they don't need.

Doggymummar · 12/02/2025 14:35

As an insomniac I am very much if the mind a bedroom is for sleeping and sex only. We live in a small bungalow and I do hair makeup etc in the bathroom. No TV no books nada

Greenstag · 12/02/2025 14:37

I agrees very strongly with no TV in my bedroom. I have a bookshelves in my room and hobby supplies too and some books.

I am contemplating building a raised bed platform, with storage drawers underneath, plus having some very high shelving all around the room for those 30 cm cube baskets.
This in addition to expedit shelves, which will tuck in underneath.

If I needed the chair, I would slant it.

There is also the possibility of creating a four poster effect with something like those tall cd shelves at each corner of the bed, with some side cupboards in a headboard, and the canopy could also contain cupboard space.

If you wanted a higher bed, there could be hanging space underneath and steps up to it could also contain drawers

Do you need two bed side tables?
My one has a lamp and alarm clock on. Sometimes a book.

Springflowersmakeforbetterhours · 12/02/2025 15:55

I made this for my niknaks...
It is much fuller now though!

Yes I need two bedside tables. For a lamp on each. There are other things too.

I am thinking if I was to reduce the size or the width of them maybe I might be able to try and get a little more space for now.

Do you have space in the rest of the house? Does everything that's in your room NEED to stay in your room?

Could your chair go elsewhere, or better yet, could you address the acid reflux with a change of diet, medication etc?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 12/02/2025 16:25

Replace your bedside tables with a shelf each side of the bed to free you some floor space.

Massive declutter.

Does everything you have stirred in your bedroom have to be stored in your bedroom?

loropianalover · 12/02/2025 16:27

We keep our chest of drawers in the hallway and it freed up a lot of floor space for moving around.

Can you do under bed storage - we have 2 large containers with wheels, we put seasonal stuff, ski boots etc in there.

crankytoes · 12/02/2025 16:47

Could you instead of shrinking the bedside tables, make them bigger. Can you change them for two chests of drawers? You could then use the to keep clothes or hobby supplies in

SirQuintusAurelius · 12/02/2025 16:59

Can you do something to make a sort of dressing table/shelf so the chair will fit under it and utilise the wall space above to maximise any lost storage - like these sort of things?

even if the chair only fits partially under it, it would be more out the way and stop you having to move it all the time.
