Should I go on holiday?

Youagain2025 · 10/02/2025 17:39

I'm loosely thinking about going on holiday.

I have never been on holiday as an adult.

I'm thinking maybe next summer maybe may or June. Not sure in that.

Going would be DD 15, Ds 11, DS 10 and myself. That will be ages at time of travel. If older DS wants to come he will have to pay for himself.

We would like to go abroad. Somewhere fun , family friendly.

It have to be all inclusive. That is a must with no negotiation. Reasons is is saves the worry on budgeting for food . My life is pretty stressful and i feel like i deserve a break from cooking and cleaning up life in general.

This would probably cost me at least 3k - 4k?

Although I would like to do this I'm also thinking is it really worth it . I'm not in work and have children with special needs so income is not the best . I would like to do it if I can. But then I go the other way and think is it worth all that money

Go after last gcse exam but before schools have broken up. Yes the youngest will miss school but it will be waaaaaayyyyy cheaper.

I'd definitely do this, or wait until the summer break, rather than going during the May half term in a GCSE year. One thing to bear in mind is that there is a contingency period after the final exams which is set aside in case any exams need to be rescheduled. So to be safe you shouldn't travel until after then. If you ask the school they should be able to give you the exact date.

There are many people working that couldn’t afford such a holiday.

And?

I've just had a quick look on Jet 2, cheapest AI to Turkey (picked as a random place and will be warm) is 4376, but that is all in one room, one double bed and sofa beds. where would you need to fly from?

Gatwick or Heathrow. The prices are madness. I was looking to go 23rd of may 2026 . Really not sure now

Should I go on holiday?

I was more talking about getting there and back. Of course most staff speak some English in the resort, but that doesn't mean that they are fluent- why should they? You might also be surrounded by holiday makers from other countries which might alienate your DC.
Plus, if you are travelling abroad, you can't just assume everyone speaks your language.

I'm really confused. I would find away wouldn't i ? I cant just not go somewhere because of the language I would never leave England.

to get an idea of costs you can go on easyJet or jet 2, even last minute.com put in your dates, ask for all inclusive (you can tick off things like want a pool etc) and it will give you an idea of the cost which will include flights, hotel and food. it will give you a good idea of possibilities. you can play a bit with dates to show what might work out cheaper
I did the for a friend of mine, who needed to book a holiday, didn't want to do any admin, knew her budget and date and came up with a suitable holiday.

motherofbees · 11/02/2025 13:19

We went to Mallorca with some friends and their kids some with ADHD
Used EasyJet holidays. The rooms were basic but the food was amazing and there was plenty to do in and around the hotel
I think it was about £400 each maybe less
EasyJet seem much much cheaper than tui etc but you still get the same benefits. Would definitely recommend for a cheap and cheerful summer break.

MiddleAgedDread · 11/02/2025 13:20

You're not sure if your 15yr old is in year 11 next year?? Surely you know what school year your kids are in? Year 11 will have GSCE exams either side of May half term.
If you go AI with one of the UK package holiday operators you will not need to speak a word of a foreign language.

MissyB1 · 11/02/2025 13:24

Definitely go after last GCSE, that's what we are doing this year. Problem being though, the exam dates for 2026 won't be out until next Jan at the soonest. You are usually OK from either last week of June or first week July though.

AI = All Inclusive
GSCEs will always run both sides of May half term week so she should be revising that week.

Jet2 as it includes luggage
With DC with SN, they may need particular stuff and no need to share suitcases with J2

MiseryIn · 11/02/2025 20:12

God yes! Go!
If it makes it easier you could think about booking with someone like love holidays. You pay £29 per person and then monthly instalment's.

I'm not sure when half term is exactly and it depends where you fly from but you can def get all inclusive on love holidays for around £500per person.

MiseryIn · 11/02/2025 20:16

Sorry I meant if you wait till a bit nearer the time.

TwinklyRoseTurtle · 11/02/2025 20:23

I would book OP and just pay it off. You and your children deserve the break, I would pick mainland Spain-
2/3 hour flight only. When you book request disability assistance with airline- they will give your children lanyards to state they have a hidden disability and get to go through a quieter security and no queuing. The Spanish airports are also great for disability assistance, just makes the experience so much better and easier for all of you. I hope you go and enjoy your trip

Autism. Im not worried about that to be honest. I would manage.

I'm wondering if I did decided to do it would I be better to actually book and then keep paying it off . Or should I save it in my bank account and then pay once I have saved enough ?

It might be worth looking at last minute deals this year to see how cheap they can go near to the date. TUI have a late deals section on their website so if you can be flexible on airports or dates within a couple of days, you might get a bargain. Though this is not guaranteed.

Do you know anyone with a blue light card? You get a discount with some holiday companies. Or if you join some Facebook pages for Jet2 or easyJet, people often give away their rain check vouchers. I have given mine away a few times.

I got fantastic deals a few years through a company called Very Cheap Holidays who were a subsidiary of Thomas Cook.Terrible name but the lady I regularly dealt with got me amazing prices. One year I got a week in an all inclusive in Greece for £600 each less than everyone else had paid. Perhaps there are other similar companies out there now who can help you.

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 11/02/2025 21:39

Also while you save maybe consider putting your money in Premium Bonds as you may win money as you save

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 11/02/2025 21:40

Also look at Stansted. Flights are often cheaper from there. Not sure why

DoneRomeodone · 11/02/2025 21:48

Not wanting to derail thread but where in Benalmadena did you stay FunkyMonks? Keep looking as love Benalmadena but not sure about family hotels.

OP I would think Majorca would be perfect for a first holiday abroad for the kids. Not too far, easy in terms of English speaking, and lovely beaches. The May half term comes out expensive though. It’s a popular time to go as hot but not too hot.
