Those VHS films from our childhood

Elder millennials and Gen X, what films would you rewatch over and over again as a child in the 80s?

I have so many, mostly recorded from TV by my mum, sometimes not the most appropriate for an 8 year old!

Mannequin has stuck with me for life, I loved it so much.

They don’t make movies like that anymore. (Possibly for good reason)

I don't know whether it was just a prominent feature of 80s films, but sci-fi and aliens seem to feature quite heavily!

HR Pufnstuff - no one else ever seems to remember it apart from me and my sister.

And anything weird happening was highlighted with blue special effects..

Our local paper shop did VHS rentals and I loved going in on a Friday after school and picking my film and snacks for the weekend!

I can add the Rocky & Rambo films... not something I would let my 10 & 12 year olds watch.
But then, that was the good old days! 😆

I loved going to choose a video - miss the whole nostalgia of the video shop, I was sad when Blockbuster closed ☹️

Plus all the old Christopher Lee Dracula films for some reason
Aww I forgot about them!
And Miss Marple with Margaret Rutherford... absolutely loved them as a kid.

We were a betamax house. I was the first of my friends to have a video, c1985, courtesy of my uncle's staff discount when he worked at Sony. It even had a remote control albeit attached by a long wire and only did rewind and fast forward.

On repeat with my friends:

We had a vhs van come to our street, like a mobile library. Loved it.

I watched Spaceballs the movie so many times!

Also loved Short Circuit 1 & 2.

I remember going to see flight of the navigator in the cinema, and also remember my parents who were quite shady selling copies of ET before it was even in the cinema…. Oops

Turner and Hooch (Tom Hanks as a cop with a dog) - loved it, got it out of the video shop many times

My favourite video was about the restoration of York Minster after the 1984 fire. I was gutted when my video recorder broke the tape. I've never found it again.

Candleshoe

Blimey, I have never ever heard anyone else mention Candleshoe! I saw it at the cinema, even bought the book. I've admired Jodie Foster since then.

I had a crush on Kurt Russell. Still would to be honest.

There was a documentary by Rowan Atkison on visual comedy in 1992, which I watched hundreds of times. It was quite seriously presented, despite being about comedy. It's on Youtube: search for "visual comedy rowan atkinson".

Some of these were at the cinema without parents when I was ahem "15". I think part of the nostalgia is remembering feeling so grown up going to the cinema without a parent and our local tiny single screen cinema didn't worry about your age, I think they needed the ticket sales!
