Those VHS films from our childhood

Elder millennials and Gen X, what films would you rewatch over and over again as a child in the 80s?

I have so many, mostly recorded from TV by my mum, sometimes not the most appropriate for an 8 year old!

Mannequin has stuck with me for life, I loved it so much.

They don’t make movies like that anymore. (Possibly for good reason)

I've never understood why a Hollywood director wanted to do remake of Cinderella as a street prostitute and why it's many people's favourite film.

Platypusxxp · 09/02/2025 17:58

Loved clue, back to the future, princess bride, goonies.
Obviously dirty dancing.
Terminator and die hard.
I think with cgi etc the plots are weaker

Youngheartsalittletogetherness · 09/02/2025 17:59

As a 15 year old Quadrophenia I played it to death.
I don't want to be like everyone else..that's why I'm a Mod see.😁

Return to Oz. Absolutely terrifying, but they showed it to us at junior school: perhaps we were made of harder stuff then.

Oh I read that book quite young!
Scissor Sisters have a song with an interesting take on that film- the Wheelies are mentioned. The illustrations were terrifying!

An American Werewolf in London. I’ve seen that film more times than I’ve seen my arse, but, unlike my arse, it never gets old.

It's a fabulous film. Watched it on a hire video tape when it first came out! Cert 18 I think and I was a lot younger! 😁

clarepetal · 09/02/2025 18:06

I love so many of these! Anyone watch Hairspray?

DialSquare · 09/02/2025 18:10

The Wanderers. Definitely not age appropriate but I was obsessed with it! I still listen to the soundtrack now.

StMarie4me · 09/02/2025 18:14

Mannequin was awesome!

As is "A Mom For Christmas"- similar vein by with ONJ and all festive.

I had a vhs that were recorded off the tv so often had 2 films on the one cassette. I even remember every advert recorded on them 😂 My favourites at about age 12 were:

The craft, followed by Thumbelina (don blooth)

Bedknobs and broomsticks, followed by The Lost Boys,

Labrynth, followed by Dirty Dancing

A fairy tale, followed by Secret Garden

Theremedy · 09/02/2025 18:21

And so often the adverts were Christmas adverts as that was prime recording time!

Spaceballs!
"The combination is.... 1 2 3 4 5."
"That's the stupidest combination I ever heard in my life! It's the kind of thing an idiot would have on his luggage!"

Come out to play

UrsulasHerbBag · 09/02/2025 18:28

Halloween, Exorcist, Grease, Dirty Dancing, Willy Wonka, BiG, predator, pretty woman, mannequin, lost boys and we were obsessed with poltergeist. My friends dad had a big collection and the video cases looked like books… they were posh.

Noodlesand · 09/02/2025 18:29

Flight of the navigator
ET
The Goonies
Batteries not included
Uncle Buck
Jurassic Park
Gremlins
Big
The Neverending story
The Karate Kid
Honey I shrunk the kids
Three Men and a Baby (and the sequel!)
The land before time
Charlie and the chocolate factory
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Mary Poppins
The little mermaid (both original and remake!)
Plus all the old Christopher Lee Dracula films for some reason... (DM was a bit obsessed with them)

Several were recorded but we also had regular trips to the rental video shop!

CatMum27 · 09/02/2025 18:31

I loved the film Overboard as a child. Still do and will watch it on a regular basis, despite its somewhat questionable storyline. Total comfort watch from childhood though.

MaybeIamJealous · 09/02/2025 18:31

So many of these, but the one that stands out for me, and was watched to the point of breaking the tape, was The Outsiders. Introduced me to Patrick Swayze, Matt Dillon, Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise, and others. C. Thomas Howell didn't quite make the big time in the same way, but he was my favourite 😍 I was just about 11 or 12 I'd say when I first saw this, and well, none of the local lads looked anything nearly as good as that line up 😘

OctoblocksAssemble · 09/02/2025 18:33

When I was 7 my fav movie was Jason and the argonauts, I made a beeline for it everytime my dad took me to blockbusters (luckily he liked it too).
2 movies that I haven't been able to replace my vision copies of are 1201, which was like groundhog day but more of a thriller type plot, and Legend with the Tangerine Dream soundtrack. The region 2 release has a more traditional orchestral score, which completely ruins it for me.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 09/02/2025 18:34

One film we watched over and over and over was Top Secret.

I think I know the entire script.

Just head today that the full soundtrack is being released for record store day this year.

Other than that it was a collection of Duran Duran videos or episodes of The Young Ones that we would record off the TV on a Tuesday and watch again and again until the next episode aired.

Beautifulweeds · 09/02/2025 18:35

The carry on films, love them all! ❤️

Yes! I've been after the Tangerine Dream soundtrack version of Legend too! So much better!
