My sinus'!!

They hurt so much! They feel stingy, I do have a slight cold so guess it's because of that. My head around my eyebrows and sides of my nose are so painful. Does this sound like a sinus infection?

It does sound like a sinus infection but I'm not a doctor...

Steam, menthol vapour, sinus massage all help. Be careful with decongestants because after a few days of use they stop being effective and then you move onto rebound mucus.

Neti pots and sinus washes can be excellent but make sure you do them properly. Boots sell kits and they absolutely have to be done with properly sterile water (not tap) or you put your brain at risk. Alternatively you could try Sterimar, which is a saline nasal rinse in a canister you can get from pharmacies.

See nhs website for symptoms that warrant going to a doctor or indicate the need for anti biotics.

I'd also suggest a daily antihistamine if you suffer from allergies because they won't be helping.

You forgot the capital S for sinuses as it was the first word you used, so it needed one.

Influenza A at the end of infection is resulting in sinus pain. I know half a dozen people who have had this Flowers

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 09/02/2025 07:52

I get repeated sinusitis. I have one at the moment. Nasal rinse - I use neilmed to help keep the pain at bay. And Sudafed. If is still here in a day or so back for antibiotics.

Sorry, Op only came on to chortle at the punctuation pedants, who haven't disappointed..! 😆

Hope you're feeling better soon. 💐

I don't think it's flu, I'm not floored by it. It's just all in my head and have a bit of a bad chest.
The two times I've had Covid it's affected my face really bad so thinking it's probably that !

You may need antibiotics especially if you have a chest infection. Don’t mess around with it as just over 2 years ago I ended up in hospital with pneumonia - i
just thought I had a bit of a cough. Turns out not!

Never, ever do this without properly sterile water. Seriously.

why? I do it twice a day at the moment. I drink tap water?

DeathMetalMum · 09/02/2025 08:31

Sudafed from behind the counter and a steroid nasal spray do the job for me. Along with regular ibuprofen/paracetamol. Steam is also a go to, or just plunging my face in a quite warm basin of water.

I had a sinus thing a few weeks back and had some lovely highlighter yellow coloured stuff come out of my nose. Mine did clear without the need for antibiotics.

Whataretalkingabout · 09/02/2025 08:35

I once had a really terrible sinus headache because of stuffy sinuses and was so bad I had an emergency appointment with an ears nose and throat doctor. He took two long wooden sticks wrapped them in sterile cotton wool and soaked them in alcohol and then stuck them way up my nose and left them there for a half hour. Instant relief.

Fairyvocals · 09/02/2025 08:38

@tonyhawks23 There have been some horrible stories of people dying from brain infections after using tap water in neti pots.

Tap water, although in the UK is clean for most things, should never be used in the eyes or up the nose because it can carry microscopic nasties and both the sinuses and eyes are too close to the brain - people can, and do, pick up amboeas which can get into the brain from these places. Same reason why you should never wear contact lenses in the shower, bath or to swim.

If using tap water for nasal (or eye) irrigation then it should be freshly boiled and allowed to cool first. Don't use it if it's been sitting out for a while.

This...7 days of saline washes. A kit is sub £10 on Amazon.

Use cooled boiled water, you don't need any special "sterile water", boiled water is enough.

I've been doing sinus washes for years...genetics suck, dad and I both struggle with a malformed sinus.

sp1ders · 09/02/2025 11:12

I get sinusitis due to allergies and I use the Sterimar spray, a hot water bottle to relieve the pain (it also gets the mucous moving), co codamol for severe pain and some guifenesin (can't spell it) to thin the mucous and help it move. I also use a Beclometasone nasal spray to calm the inflammation down.

Imgoingtobefree · 09/02/2025 12:20

I’ve often had success with massaging/rubbing around my face and nose, mostly when I’ve got a blocked nose. It somehow clears it. I can see any harm if you have sinusitis and it may help the pain.

It can take a while, say 10 mins. I’m sure there’s something on YouTube.

BeMoreAmandaland · 09/02/2025 12:26

Remember boiled water shouldn't be cooled by the adding of cold water :)
