Burial or cremation?

Apologies for the morbid thread! Was at a funeral today which is what brought it to mind.

Would you rather be buried or cremated? I’ve a will and letter of wishes that says no preference but having thought about it think I’d rather be buried.

Google scattering human ashes and all the rules are there. Too long to post on here .

I want to be composted.
After the wake everyone can take home a free bag and put me on their roses!
Or if they live in a flat and don’t want it, just leave me on the pallet display outside the nearest B&Q.

I love this idea.

I would like the composting to become an option here as well.

But personally, organ donation have the first dibs on me if I die in a suitable way for things to be re-used. After that the local university have a claim on me as I've signed a form to donate my body there. Basically "donation to science" to get some use from me if possible, for education or whatever. After that, dispose of whatever is left as you see fit. I won't be around to care.

I wish we had "body farms" in this country as being involved in one of those would be fascinating!

Check out these FAQs about body donation if you're interested: www.hta.gov.uk/body-donation-faqs

I'd like to have a direct cremation. I had thoughts of having my ashes scattered somewhere but didn't realise that there were rules about this (and not always good for the environment) - can anyone clarify what is allowed?

Accordiing to t'internet in basic terms you have to get permission of the landowner. That may be a private person, body like the local council, National Trust or the Crown Estate etc. You may have to follow some environmental rules as well especially with scattering in National Parks or mountains. To scatter on a river you only need permission if it's a privately owned stretch of water (apart from area covered by Port of London Authority), but it shouldn't be near any buildings, swimming or fishing spots, or marinas and must be more than 1km from a water plant or reservoir. Ashes should be scattered as close to the surface as possible. If it's more than 5 miles out to sea you can pretty much do what you want.
