Failed my driving test ( again)

As above just failed my test for the fourth time. I tried years ago and had one test where I had no faults and one major, followed by two disastrous tests. I was really put off after that and didn’t have enough money to keep trying. Today after a year of having lessons I plucked up the courage ended up with one major and four minors. These were all in an automatic. I worked out very early on that a gear stick wasn’t going to be manageable. I’m quite an academic person but really struggle with physical/ practical stuff. Do I keep trying? I feel so down. I got a really easy test route today as well and a pleasant examiner. Disappointed with myself

Absolutely keep trying hopefully you will pass next time .

TiramisuThief · 05/02/2025 11:26

One major doesn't sound disastrous to me, definitely worth it to keep trying.

PeachPumpkin · 05/02/2025 11:28

Keep going. I failed many more than you before I passed. Consider having several lessons close together in the run up to the test, if you can afford it. Are you tending to fail on the same sort of thing each time?

I really struggled with learning to drive. Failed my first test at 20 gave up tried again a decade later when I’d moved out to the sticks and needed a car. It took me ages failed again. I then did a semi intensive course, 3 hours every other day for months and passed.

I don’t think I was a good driver even after all that practice. Twelve years later I’ve actually had two jobs that needed considerable driving and I’d say now that I’m a good driver.

Id say to press on you and treat the whole thing as a bc learning experience. You learn from failure as well. My instructor told me that passing your test is a stage you go through when learning to drive.

Cryingatthegym · 05/02/2025 11:31

Keep going and try not to overthink it.

I passed on the 6th attempt. I put so much pressure on myself and just went to pieces with nerves each time, so I actually found that once I got to the point you're at now (fed up and ready to sack it off) it was a lot easier to pass, because I was basically past caring and suddenly that pressure was lifted.

Been driving almost a decade now. So glad I persevered.

SushiSheep · 05/02/2025 11:34

Book another test as soon as you can.
The ones you’ve taken so far are just mock exams 🙂
Come on @Pyjamatimenow , you’ve got all of us behind you - you can do this!

Mindymomo · 05/02/2025 11:35

Keep going, my Aunt passed on 6th attempt, she was a good driver, but didn’t have confidence in tests.

gamerchick · 05/02/2025 11:36

What was your major?

Tbh it doesn't sound catastrophic. I'd get back on the horse.

EveryKneeShallBow · 05/02/2025 11:36

Frustrating isn’t it? For people that can do it it looks so easy. But we all go through this process and honestly, if you keep going you will get there.

can you identify what seems to be the issue? I wish you well. I wouldn’t want to have to do my test again. Keep going. Good luck 🤞

No it’s always been different things. Today it was that when I pulled in and then tried to get out again I was too close to a parked car. Feel such an idiot.

Being too close to a parked car 😭

Many people can drive but just can’t pass their test. What were you failing on? Was it a known weakness or something you know you can do in a non-test situation?

Don’t give up. You’ll get there, some people do it WAY more than 4 times! Are you doing private practice? This was the game changer for me.

PeachPumpkin · 05/02/2025 11:39

Please don’t feel bad. It’s stressful but you will pass. You sound like you’re really close to doing so.

You’re not an idiot. Sounds like nerves. That’s something you can fix. This was your first test in x number of years, give yourself a break!

If it's always different things you know how to drive. Now it's time to focus on learning to pass the test. I'll echo other posters and suggest you go on long drives before your next test. Learning to relax and drive will help a lot. You've almost cracked it - keep going!

Pyjamatimenow · 05/02/2025 11:47

@KhakiShaker the trouble is dh won’t take me out in the car because he says our car is too big to drive in. We also always have to have the kids with us in the back as we don’t have any family to babysit so that’s an added complication although it does make me drive very carefully!

Don't give up. You need an instructor who will teach you how to pass a test. Take a couple of hours and ask them exactly what to do. Also, see some clips online. I passed on 2nd attempt after 3 years from the 1st and I couldn't believe it. Had a fab instructor and an examiner, both female. Maybe I simply got lucky.

CeeJay81 · 05/02/2025 11:50

I've got an automatic test booked for end of March. I'm in my 40s!. Suffered with anxiety/nerves most of my life. Tried learning to drive multiple times but never even got close to booking test. Tried auto this time and it is definitely easier but there are little things I'm not doing right, so I'm still worried I'll fail. I know however can do this. I know I can try again if I mess up. So come on, we've got this! We will get there!! 🚗

CrotchetyQuaver · 05/02/2025 11:53

Keep going, forget the previous attempts in the past and count this one as your first. Most people don't pass first time, I was 3rd time. I'm sure you'll get there in the end

Pyjamatimenow · 05/02/2025 11:56

@CeeJay81 I’m early forties too. Solidarity!

Yay let's get there together! Hopefully by car 🚗 😁

DemonicCaveMaggot · 05/02/2025 11:59

I passed on my fifth attempt when I was 25. I took lessons and the test in my instructor's car which does help I think. I just get so nervous in tests and exams. I could drive perfectly well outside a test and enjoyed it too.

Whattodo1610 · 05/02/2025 11:59

Definitely keep at it! It’s probably just nerves on the day of the test. Your dh is not helping by saying his car is too big for you to drive - that’s immediately making you subconsciously think you’re not good enough 😡 Book back in straight away. Go to your next test with the attitude of ‘well, what will be will be’ .. take the pressure off passing - could make all the difference.

Pyjamatimenow · 05/02/2025 12:05

@Whattodo1610 yes that is sort of irritating. The first car I learned in was a massive high jeep type affair. He’s very protective of his car

Took me 6 times. Keep going..on the 6th go I had given up caring whether I passed or not!
