Derby hospital charging £25 for parking if you’re over 90 minutes

This can’t be right can it?

Someone has just told me this

It's true because they've got very limited onsite parking. Longer stay visitors have to use park and ride.

TickingAlongNicely · 05/02/2025 07:32

Google shows this is correct
But its free for blue badge holders and there is a free Park and Ride service.

TwentyTwentyFive · 05/02/2025 07:33

You've missed out so much relevant information here. A quick Google would tell you that yes they are charging if you exceed 90 minutes but that's because they are building a new multi story car park and have limited space for parking. Some of the car parks are dedicated to blue badge holders and they are also offering a park and ride service for patients and visitors which is free.

TeapotCollection · 05/02/2025 07:37

I haven’t missed anything out, someone at work mentioned it and I thought I’d ask if anyone knew

That link (thank you for that) says Park and ride closes at 6:30, so unless I’m prepared to pay £25 a day I can only see my husband for 90 minutes a day

How much would getting an Uber both ways be for you? Could you “park and stride” as schools would put it?

TwentyTwentyFive · 05/02/2025 07:41

The link also says if you need access to your car after 6.30 you phone for assistance?

I presume your husband is currently in the hospital given your update? I'm sure one of those caring for him would be able to put your mind at rest if you spoke to them

Phineyj · 05/02/2025 07:43

Is there no bus? People used to moan a lot about parking at my old hospital but it was well served by buses. They just weren't prepared to catch them!

Sorry your husband is unwell.

TickingAlongNicely · 05/02/2025 07:47

Having a family member in hospital long term is hard. However, without those rules, its sounds like you wouldn't be able to get a parking space at all.

We identified other places close by for parking rather than the hospital car park... a supermarket with a 3hr limit was our preferred one (and popped in each time for supplies

ETA... this is generic advice for parking, I'm not familiar with Derby hospital)

I had a family member in hospital there recently. If we went over the 90 mins the ward said they could stamp our ticket or whatever they needed to do to ensure we didn’t pay the £25.

Definitely ask the staff on the ward next time you’re in. I’m sure there’s ways round it to be able to visit after 6.30 without incurring charges.

hattie43 · 05/02/2025 07:52

Whatever the offerings , alternatives or circumstances to charge £25 is disgraceful. They are taking advantage .

I think those signs are from before the work on the new multi storey started. The car parks in question were short stay ones before this all began. Now they are the only ones available to none blue badge holders, so like I said I think there are ways round this charge.

Either way, it’s not been made very clear, I’ll say that.

DeathMetalMum · 05/02/2025 07:58

Use the park and ride, then move the car to the hospital car park once the park and ride has closed? Bit of a faff but will get you a longer visiting time. You'll then have whatever time you can stay in the park and ride + 90 minutes.

AlisonDonut · 05/02/2025 07:59

Parking at Derby Hospital has been a nightmare since it first opened. You'd have to give yourself an extra hour just to park and I'm not even kidding.

It really would be quicker to park at Kingsway and walk it.

ERthree · 05/02/2025 08:09

Please ask the ward staff if there is a free parking pass you can use.

TheyAreNotAngelsTheyDontCareAtAll · 05/02/2025 08:17

In most hospitals, if your reletive has been in over two weeks, you can ask for free parking. Ward will sign a form for you.

Yes there are buses but the hospital isn't situated in the city centre so the vast majority of users need to catch two buses.

TeapotCollection · 05/02/2025 09:41

Yes my husband went in yesterday

Taxi would cost a fortune, we live 45 minutes away

I hadn’t noticed that you can get access to the park and ride after 6:30, thank you TwentyTwentyFive for that. I’d have to get a taxi to there because the last shuttle bus is way before that. That’s definitely an option though

They gave me a pass to get out yesterday but made it clear it was a one off

AlisonDonot is quite right, the multi story is needed

Having spent a week visiting my DM in a hospital with similar parking my advice would be to look if there are any local spaces advertised on Just Park.

Managed to pay £6 a day instead of £25 and about the same distance from the ward as the multi storey.

Fluffyc1ouds · 05/02/2025 10:03

Are there any streets nearby to park on? Even if they're for permit holders, if you need to park for a few hours then a parking ticket would cost the same if not less.

If it's evening time there are plenty of streets nearby that you can park if someone is prepared for a 10 minute walk. Residents do get annoyed during the day when tons of people are parking there, but by evening all the clinics at the hospital have closed.

MermaidEyes · 05/02/2025 10:16

Also seconding pps that the multi storey should have been built when the hospital was, it's ridiculous that it wasn't.

Cynic17 · 05/02/2025 10:18

A patient in hospital needs to rest, so they certainly don't need visitors for more than 90 minutes per day!

TeapotCollection · 05/02/2025 10:21

AnnaMagnani you are a fucking legend! Thank you so much, I had no idea this was a thing. Got a space 10 minutes walk away for £8.50 from 3 til 9 - someone earns a few quid,I don’t piss anyone off by taking ‘their’ space and I don’t have to run the gauntlet of the horrendous car park

I can’t thank you enough, you’ve made a stressful time so much better 💐💐

Depends why they are there. When my mother was in hospital, she wanted people there because ultimately she was scared and lonely.

Same as my local hospital. Buses are frequent and the interchange is directly opposite the main entrance. However, very few people get on and off. They’d rather take their cars and drive around and around the packed car park until a spot become available.
