What is the loudest sound you have ever heard?

Both of mine were at very close quarters. One was a foghorn on a cross-channel ferry. It sounded whilst I, unbeknownst to me, was sitting right underneath it. I jumped so far it's a wonder I didn't end up in the sea! The other was one afternoon at work, standing underneath Concorde when it was starting two of its four engines. It was the most incredible, deep-chested roar I've ever heard. Yet to be surpassed.

Lightening striking the building just around the corner from mine. I was shocked. Never heard anything so loud.

Sonic boom

2nd one. Raf Abingdon Sep 1988 phantom plane crash on the airfield. Absolutely horrific, never heard a sound like it before or since, the ground shook and some things (on a caravan rally adjacent to the airfield) just tumbled to the floor,

And the split second silence just after the plane hit the runway I will never forget either. Then all hell let loose. I was 11.

we did (a fabulous) Vespa tour around Rome and it ended at midday and they took us to a hill and surprised us with this - I videoed it on my phone and couldn’t show my parents as it was so loud I shouted motherf$#*! All you could hear was a boom and me swearing - my ears rang for ages afterwards but 100% recommended it!

The Janiculum Hill Cannon

An all-Roman and long-standing tradition that takes place punctually every day, rain or shine, and which can be seen from the so-called “Balcony of Rome”,

The noon-day gun at the local castle! It's loud enough hearing a cannon from within the castle, it's bloody terrifying when you're on a boat right beneath it because you weren't paying attention to the time!

A Typhoon at an air show. Very loud, but very impressive!

Lightning hitting a nearby house, I didn't realise how loud it could be.

When my tyre punctured on my bike with a loud bang. I thought someone was shooting at me, had a brief moment of panic until DP pointed out what had happened!

A harrier taking off at 2am in Mildenhall when I was camped directly the other side of the fence! Scared the bejesus out of me.

A sonic boom a few years ago when I was stood in the garden. Genuinely thought something had exploded.

During take off from Monastir airport there was a thunder and lightning storm. Lightning hit the plane. It was very loud and frightening. The captain called the head of the cabin crew. After speaking to the captain, the head of the cabin crew then checked all the windows in the plane. 😨

Sonic boom, airline crash ( two harrier jets in the 80s), prodigy gig.

Sonic boom at work. I thought something massive had fallen off the roof of the building I was in and smashed on the ground, as the sound was like a crash and I felt the 'boom'. Then my manager said its just a Hornet breaking the sound barrier (which it wasn't supposed to do over a populated area)

Also heard a very loud aircraft engine when I was playing frisbee goal near the airfield, must have been doing ground run tests because the engine would roar for a bit then switch off. Possibly C-130 Hercules because I had seem them flying over as well.

The Vulcan taking off in front of me at Farnborough airshow.

Typhoon at an airshow.

We had a sonic boom recently but I just thought it was thunder.
