What is the loudest sound you have ever heard?

Both of mine were at very close quarters. One was a foghorn on a cross-channel ferry. It sounded whilst I, unbeknownst to me, was sitting right underneath it. I jumped so far it's a wonder I didn't end up in the sea! The other was one afternoon at work, standing underneath Concorde when it was starting two of its four engines. It was the most incredible, deep-chested roar I've ever heard. Yet to be surpassed.

Motörhead concert

Motörhead concerts were fabulous, but not a patch on how loud my dog is when throwing up at 3am 🤦‍♂️

TheyAreNotAngelsTheyDontCareAtAll · 03/02/2025 21:32

Massive Attack concert. The sound wave could have shattered kidney stones

A My Bloody Valentine concert

@darksigns jealous!

@user14767230 Ditto!

And my dad playing his bagpipes in the living room when I was 7 😭

Sonic boom. I'd never even heard of sonic booms and had no idea such a thing existed. One day there was this huge explosion sound and I saw the house shaking. It really felt as if the next door house had been bombed. I was terrified.

rivalsbinge · 03/02/2025 21:33

At the front of an ABGT concert in Amsterdam, it was amazing but so so so loud, I couldn't hear properly for about a week after.

leafyloop · 03/02/2025 21:33

Clap of thunder during a tropical storm - the block of flats I was in physically shook.

darksigns · 03/02/2025 21:34

@user14767230 It was excellent, not sure my ears ever recovered though, even with hearing protection!

hexsnidgett · 03/02/2025 21:34

Dd as a baby screaming, I remember my ears used to ring. She is the sweetest young lady now.
I don't remember My Bloody Valentine being that loud, although I have heard their reputation.

A bomb in central London back in the days of IRA’s terror campaign, I was working in the next street.

The bus bomb on July 7th

My ex husband used to have firearms and we had a specialist alarm system and CCTV. When he left, the firearms went with him and he cancelled the alarm contract. A whole decade later, I can't begin to explain the sound of the alarm that randomly went off at 11 at night. I'd never heard it. I had to leave the house it was so unbearable. It woke the street up. It went off after 20 minutes. I had no idea how to disable it and it was so loud nobody could stay in the house long enough to have a look.

It went off again at 3 am for 20 mins and I just had to lay there with pillows on my head until it stopped. The next day my neighbour and I managed to locate the box and the battery in it and disconnect it. It was horrendous. That bastard and his bloody guns 🙄

WonderingWanda · 03/02/2025 21:35

BCM nightclub in Magaluf, so loud it hurt my ears, I put tissue in them to dull the sound stood outside most of the night. It made me go partially deaf for 2 days.

The turbine room in a nuclear power station was pretty loud even with ear defenders on.

Heidi2018 · 03/02/2025 21:37

The way "my fiancé snoring" popped into my head IMMEDIATELY when I read the thread title makes me sad 🙈

RaveToTheGrave1 · 03/02/2025 21:39

Standing under a military jet on the flightpath where my husband used to work, it was so close to the safety fence and scared the absolute kak out of me

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 03/02/2025 21:40

Lightning hitting the electricity transformer on a pole in our front garden. That was a hell of a bang in the middle of the night!

TheTecknician · 03/02/2025 21:40

There's nothing like a lot of sudden noise to grab your attention. As we've seen here, aeroplanes are frequent culprits. Bombs are obviously awful and many of us, me included, are of the opinion that fireworks are needlessly noisy nowadays.

Have a look at YouTube for Carter air raid sirens. They make an unspeakably chilling racket to let you know the shit is about to hit the fan.

Haha same here (DH though not fiancé!)

Honestly though I think he could win some sort of record for loud snoring especially when he's ill.

Concorde taking off from Filton when it was being tested before going into service. The housing estate I grew up on was virtually alongside the runway.

Laiste · 03/02/2025 21:44

The sonic boom people - are any of you talking about the jet plane which went across the midlands on a sat morning a couple of years ago now?

It 'boomed' over DH and i in South Northants while we were sitting in our parked car. The car shook and the windows seemed to almost flex with the sound. SO loud and all the birds in the nearby trees flew up into the air. We sat there waiting to see a nearby fireball or something!

Laiste · 03/02/2025 21:46

As a kid down in Dorset we would stand and watch the tanks firing. You're not allowed to stop there now, quite understandably! That was bloody loud and we were quite close.

TheFrendo · 03/02/2025 21:54

Lightening strikes a) multiple near summit of Pic du Midi d'Ossau b) tree strike in our garden.

TubeScreamer · 03/02/2025 21:54

Forbidden Forest rave at a site about 3 miles from where I live.

our house was vibrating and the windows rattling. it was unbearable to be outside, and it it was still loud enough inside to ruin our day. I had the most awful pounding headache and just wanted to cry because there was no escape from the noise.

A sonic boom over the town we live in a few years ago. Windows shattered and several people I know who were outside at the time suddenly found themselves down on the pavement having - without consciously deciding to - dropped to the ground for safety.

One of them, a vicar, told me later that for a split second he really thought possibly Jesus had returned.

onwardandupwards · 03/02/2025 21:57

The sound of a van crashing through my living room window!
