Spaghetti Bolognese...how do you serve yours?

Are you a stir the meat sauce and pasta together so the bits of meat kind of stick to the pasta and serve

Or a dollop of meat sauce in top of a pile of pasta ?

Whoops. Forgot to say. I mix mine in the plate up/put in serving dish.. to save money/use less actual meat. Otherwise the kids will take huge serving spoon fills of meat sauce and I'll need 2-3 times as much.

Made properly and eat it however you like. Made using a jar of Dolmio or similar and who cares. It's not bolognaise. It's an abomination

A dollop on top then some Parmesan (or cheddar) and black pepper.

Dh adds ketchup and mixes it in.

I always serve seperately as I like some of my pasta plain with the cheese and other mouthfuls with more sauce than pasta. I've just realised I am less fond of all dishes that have only one texture eg risotto

Same here - i also enjoy the pizza crust without any topping, just a little moment of plain relief from all the tomatoeyness (what? That’s definitely a word!) of the sauce.

I used to dollop but now I mix in and I do like it better this way which surprised me, I can't explain why, it's just better.
DH likes it dolloped on top .That last bit sounds like a filthy slogan on one of Kenneth's t-shirts in Benidorm doesn't it 😆

If you’re going to try and pretend you’re an Italian foodie at least spell it properly! It’s not bolognaise like fucking mayonnaise. It’s Bolognese as in something from Bologna.

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 03/02/2025 22:11

And yes, i know the actual people of Bologna don’t recognise ragu as being their dish, and that actual ‘Bolognese’ pasta sauce has tuna or some shit in it, and that Italians wouldn’t have ragu with spaghetti, but for the purposes of this thread and the UK version of what we call spaghetti Bolognese, at least spell it correctly if you want to be a dick about Dolmio.

No wankier than the multitude of posters saying 'that's how the serve it in Italy 😂
Mixing mince in with a jar of Dolmio and then being all smug about serving 'like they do in Italy' 😂😂😂

"Oooo ooooo. I use flat noodles. No one in Italy uses spaghetti darhling ...." as they mix their mince in with Dolmio and stir it about for 10 mins 🤣

I tend to dollop for this reason. If every mouthful is exactly the same I am bored after about 5 mouthfuls. Hate risotto.

Lovelysummerdays · 04/02/2025 08:58

I chucknthe pasta in with the sauce as soon as it’s done, I think it tastes nicer as pasta absorbs sauce/ flavour. I am lazy so a good stir and pop pan on table for self service.

DiscoBeat · 04/02/2025 09:00

I use linguine instead of pasta and mix it all up. Parmesan and basil on top

BarnacleBeasley · 04/02/2025 09:06

I used to be a mixer, but now I have a fussy toddler so the pasta and sauce are in separate pans on the table and he gets a little bowl of sauce next to a bigger bowl for him to serve himself pasta into. He gobbles up a bowl of plain pasta with cheese on, and then eats the sauce with a spoon before helping himself to seconds of pasta. This counts as a win because then he's eaten the sauce. Except that it's not called sauce because he doesn't like sauce, it's called 'bolognese'. The baby gets his all mixed together. The rest of us have to dollop due to the separate saucepans thing.

GameOfJones · 04/02/2025 09:06

Always with the sauce mixed into the pasta. Although we grate parmesan onto the top ourselves as everyone likes different amounts. It tastes better mixed in and you need less sauce.

I grew up hating pasta and it was because my dad would give me a plate of plain pasta with a dollop of sauce on top. Turns out I actually do like pasta with some flavour rather than it going claggy and sticking together with no sauce coating it!

Fizbosshoes · 04/02/2025 09:22

I put it on top because then each person can have their preferred sauce:pasta ratio.
And often I top with grated cheddar cheese! (The horror!)
DH mixes sauces in, I'm not showing/telling him about this thread, he'll never let me hear the end of it that he's doing it the "proper" way! 🤣 (he doesn't entertain cheddar cheese on it either tbf)

Fawn87 · 04/02/2025 09:25

Spaghetti on first then the bolognese. I make it more saucy than dry so when it goes on top it mixes in anyway.

Same here. I don't like every mouthful tasting the same. Likewise with curries I will have the rice on one side, curry on the other.

BigDahliaFan · 04/02/2025 09:30

Dollop on top of the spaghetti/linguine. Then DH mixes it gets his knife and fork and cuts it all up into short lengths. That annoys and irritates me more than anything else he does, it's the noise. I have to sprint out the kitchen before he does it.

Favouritefruits · 04/02/2025 09:36

I serve it different depending on child/ husband! My eldest liked a ‘dollop’ on top, my youngest and my husband like it all mixed up and I don’t care 😂

soupyspoon · 03/02/2025 19:55

Pasta is meant to be all mixed in, my OH wont hear of it and says what do the Italians know!!

Bit like my mum used to serve a 70s chilli con carne with a ring of rice and the sauce in the middle. Great stuff

My Mum used to do this, then add a pile of peas on top of the chili. So ring of rice, brown chili in the middle, bright green peas on top. It was lush.

ellebelli · 04/02/2025 09:49

For us mixed in..for the kids a dollop(however they have started to mix theirs themselves now)
I bet I make my spaghetti bol different to everyone.
This recipe comes out of an Italian cookbook bough in lidl.
It's made with chicken livers, white wine, chicken stock and cream.
No garlic or tomatoes...just a bit of tom puree.
It's sooo good.
(Kids won't eat this version though 😀)

Haha I always cut mine too
Otherwise the sauce flies everywhere!
Husband and kids do not! And they look like pigs at a trough

😀

I was taught by an Italian family on an exchange trip to twirl the pasta around my fork - delicately, in only a mouthful at a time....no pigs in troughs here! (well unless I'm eating on my own in front of the telly).

BruisedNeckMeat · 04/02/2025 10:06

I prefer it mixed but am terrible at judging quantities so we dollop on day one and mix on leftover day.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/02/2025 10:12

Dollop on top, because we don't have very much spaghetti now, half the plate is something like cavalero Nero or broccoli and I want some sauce on that too.

TotallyAddictedToCoffee · 04/02/2025 12:12

Dolloped on top and COVERED IN CHEESE with a side of garlic bread 😁
