What's this on DS's neck?

He complained it was itching before bed but couldn't see anything at the time. Now he's asleep he seems to have come out in quite a rash.

I can't think of anything it could be - any ideas?

I have OCD around contamination/infestation so really struggle with things like this. My brain has gone straight to scabies and bed bugs though it would seem atypical for both of those.

Could it just be irritated if he's been scratching it? It doesn't look like anything more than that to me x

pinkroses79 · 02/02/2025 22:06

I would guess a tiny bite if it was itching.

FluteMap4 · 02/02/2025 22:09

What would bite in winter in the UK though? It would have to be bed bugs😫

Do you have a cat or dog? Looks like a flea bite to me.

Redtrainyellowcarriage · 02/02/2025 22:09

Have you changed washing powder?
was the neck of his t shirt a bit small?

Tillow4ever · 02/02/2025 22:09

Do you have any antihistamine in the house? That should stop the itching.

Fleas!

YellowRollercoaster · 02/02/2025 22:10

It looks like something might have just rubbed against his neck.... a seatbelt?

FluteMap4 · 02/02/2025 22:12

No pets so I feel fleas would be a stretch.

He's totally unbothered and fast asleep, my anxiety is very bothered though.

He did wear a top he hasn't worn in a while today so yes it might have been a bit tight around the neck but he didn't complain at all all day and only started complaining after the bath once it was off.

Did he have a bath or shower before bed? Just looks like a simple hive to me. I get them quite often from hot water, they are really itchy but go away in a few hours.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 02/02/2025 22:12

It doesn't look like anything, just a mark where his top rubbed against his neck?
Not scabies.

Redtrainyellowcarriage · 02/02/2025 22:13

I'm pretty sure it will be gone as quickly as it came

Has he been to someone else's house? Played outside and stroked a random cat? Etc. Plenty of other places he could have gotten a flea bite!

I don't think it's bed bugs as he'd be covered in them from what I've heard from a friend that had an infestation.

FluteMap4 · 02/02/2025 22:18

Thank you all, I really appreciate you taking the time to answer.

I do think a hive/reaction to friction from his top is most likely but its just weird he's not had anything like this before. I do get random hives like this myself though.

DH bought him a new duvet which he used yesterday for the first time so I guess I was worried it might have had a bed bug in it or something (far fetched I know).

A new duvet wouldn't have a bed bug.

Redtrainyellowcarriage · 02/02/2025 22:29

It looks like a friction mark not a bite to me, my hair brushes has long bristles and if I catch my neck I get a mark similar to that.
If he's not bothered by it, I'm sure it can't be that irritating for him

Motherrr · 02/02/2025 22:32

Could be an insect bite - you often can get tiny spider bits which can be itchy but have no effect. It's not scabies or bed bugs. Don't worry I'm sure he will be fine! X

It does look quite like a hive. They can be weird like that and come out of nowhere. My daughter once went to the park we went to everyday and broke out in hives - no new products/clothes/anything we could work out to cause it. Never happened again. So I wouldn’t overthink it. Just keep an eye on it and see how it’s doing tomorrow

bluesatin · 02/02/2025 22:41

I was bitten by a mosquito a few days ago, saw the little pest flying around the room.

FluteMap4 · 02/02/2025 22:43

Thinking about it, it can't be a friction mark as when he showed me just before bed there was no mark, the mark came later. So that would suggest hive or bite that then triggered a reaction.

He did lay down on some play equipment at the park today.

The timing of when he started itching would point to the bath or something in his pyjamas when he put them on. Yikes, let's not thing of bed bugs lingering in there waiting to prey on him!

I'm very sure it's not bedbugs, you need to calm your thoughts .
Your child is happily asleep, get some rest yourself x

sky1267 · 02/02/2025 22:51

It just looks like friction or something where he’s scratched his neck and made it come out in a rash. I get that all the time, often if I scratch my skin too much I’ll get a hive like reaction. It really doesn’t look bad at all and definitely doesn’t look like any kind of bite to me.

It’s 100% not bedbugs

iamnotalemon · 02/02/2025 22:52

That's not a bed bug bite. It looks more just like irritation from something x

IJulia · 02/02/2025 22:53

The start of Chicken Pox? Has he had it already?
