Is turkey mince nice?

Subjective I know but I mean is it ok? I'm not really fussed on turkey at Christmas but I would like to adapt turkey mince into mean planning as it's a lot leaner.

If you use it what dishes do you make ?

I like it.

treacledan71 · 02/02/2025 19:00

I don't think it's much less fat than the 5 per cent beef mince unless you get the real low one that is hard to get. I quite liked it though in a spag bog sauce.

It’s nice in chilli or bolognese

Dillydollydingdong · 02/02/2025 19:02

I made Bolognese with it yesterday, and tbh I thought it was a bit tasteless. It needs something to spice it up.

ForLovingAquaSheep · 02/02/2025 19:02

The tofu of the meat world. Tastes of absolutely nothing without a lot of help from other ingredients.

Occasionally use it as a substitute for pork or beef. While the texture is fine the taste is incomparable. Clearly much healthier, but life is too short.

BCBird · 02/02/2025 19:05

If the sauce you use tasty, then yes it's fine. I usually have the turkey breast- not that much taste really. Maybe the turkey thigh has more taste?

dogsandbudgey · 02/02/2025 19:05

There's also turkey burgers- I wondering they would be nice ?

Fairly tasteless and can be dry - needs a nice spicy sauce and seasoning IMO. I use it with minced pork to make meatloaf

Mindymomo · 02/02/2025 19:13

Turkey mince, is in my opinion, a bit tasteless on its own, but mixed 50/50 with beef mince, it’s way more tastier and healthier.

MinnieMowse · 02/02/2025 19:18

I make turkey burgers with caramelised onion and garlic, ground cumin, fresh herbs a little bit of lemon juice and breadcrumbs (and various other ingredients). Lots of recipes online, pick one that sounds good to you.

They are popular with my family, we eat them quite regularly with homemade flat breads and salad. Once pack of turkey mince makes plenty for 2 adults and 2 kids people.

Greenbottle123 · 02/02/2025 19:20

Turkey mince is fine in a recipe. I haven’t tried turkey burgers

CaptainCabinetsTrappedInCabinets · 02/02/2025 19:22

I make things like chilli, tacos, fajitas, enchiladas, burritos and keema curry with turkey mince.

As a PP says it needs a lot of flavour and spice to make it interesting but it leaner and better for you.

shellyleppard · 02/02/2025 19:28

I use it in my lasagna, it's lovely......big pack size too

Abracadabra12 · 02/02/2025 19:29

I think it's ok if you flavour it really aggressively - spices, lemon zest, herbs, chilli flakes etc. there's a nice Ottolenghi recipe for Turkey meatballs with lemon, dill and barberries

volingaround · 02/02/2025 19:29

I use it quite a lot in summer as think it tastes lighter than beef mince in things like Bolognese or meatballs (I also make a simpler sauce and save the rich beef Bolognese for the cold weather). There was some cookbook years ago that I really liked as it was aimed at parents with babies and toddlers, can't remember the name but there was a recipe for you and then an adaptation for a weaning baby / toddler and it had a lot of good nutritional info in it? That was big on turkey, something about zinc and selenium from memory?

Anyway, I started using it then and still go back to those recipes with my son skirting his teens so yeah I guess I like it 😅

user2848502016 · 02/02/2025 19:31

It's ok but doesn't have much flavour so you have to add spices etc. I've used it for Middle Eastern spiced mince & rice type dishes and it works well

Hayley1256 · 02/02/2025 19:33

I love making turkey burgers with it

StormingNorman · 02/02/2025 19:34

I use it in chilli. You’ll need extra seasoning compared to beef mince. I like a lot of extra smoked paprika and cumin with mine.

moggerhanger · 02/02/2025 19:37

I'm afraid I think it's horrid. Tasteless and gritty at best, and can sometimes have a weird gamey flavour. If I want to go low fat I'll mix Quorn or other veggie mince with beef or pork.

Redtrainyellowcarriage · 02/02/2025 20:17

I always think it smells 'off' never been a fan, my mum likes it for air fryer turkey burgers.

Me too! In fact we had the super low fat turkey mince lasagne for dinner tonight. Kids love it and there’s no gristly bits.
