Teen bank account

MidnightBloom · 02/02/2025 16:24

Looking to open a bank account for my dd who is 13. I've just tried the Lloyd's under 19 account but unfortunately they don't have any branches in Scotland. Lloyd's were asking us to go in and verify identification.

Can anyone recommend a teen bank account?

Santander mini 123 I think it's called

dementedpixie · 02/02/2025 16:26

My 2 have santander mini 123 accounts too

EffinMagicFairy · 02/02/2025 16:26

My DC always had Nationwide from 11.

Thank you both. I've just had a look at Starling but unfortunately me or dh would need a current account with them. Will look at santander.

Mine all have nationwide teen accounts, oldest 2 have changed them onto student version now, which was easy to do.
We have a couple of branches although not in walking distance so they largely do online banking.
We went with nationwide cos it's who DH & I are with so made it easy for us to show them how to use online.
I'm sure most banks have teen accounts though.

NorthernLiner · 02/02/2025 16:27

My DCs have Starling Kite accounts, linked to mine.

Bibbitybobbity70 · 02/02/2025 16:30

Re verification, oldest DS had to go in with me for appt but other 2 did it online with a call back from someone to talk to them (covid & post covid times. )

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 02/02/2025 16:34

Mine have the Barclays. We chose to go into branch but there was an option to do it online on a video call thing.

biggreenapple24 · 02/02/2025 16:35

Monzo do one. You do need a Monzo account, but it lets you review/manage their spending which is very handy

MidnightBloom · 02/02/2025 16:37

Thanks all. I can use her young scot card for identification but not sure what I can use for proof of address 🤔

Would a letter from school do?

MidnightBloom · 02/02/2025 16:39

@BeachHutsAndDeckchairs she's homeschooled.

My two have got Monzo accounts. You have to have an account but it is really easy to set up online. I can manage their accounts through mine so can transfer money quickly and see what they are spending. I also like the saving pots.

boredscottishpirate · 02/02/2025 16:45

My step daughter got one opened at bank of Scotland. We get alerts when she uses the card. Dying to know what she spent 22 quid in Sainsbury's when she gets home 😂

DiscoBeat · 02/02/2025 16:46

Our two have savings and current accounts with Nationwide

MidnightBloom · 02/02/2025 16:48

@boredscottishpirate maybe she's bought dinner 🤣

We use Rooster (from NatWest) for our kids.

I opened a basic NatWest account for me, which made it free for three Rooster accounts (normally £3/month I think). It wasn't hard to open my NatWest account and then a day or two for the confirmation so I could open their accounts.

Nah she came in the second I posted that. It's a Lego set of Dobby from Harry Potter Grin

Madcats · 02/02/2025 16:51

DH has a Nationwide acct, and is main earner. We opened an acct for DD when she was tiny as well as some savings accts. she has a debit card (which I think she's had since early teens)

I'd need to check frequency, but I think she and DH each had £100 bonus for being a member last year.

Wouldn't your proof of address plus birth certificate do as "proof of address"?

MidnightBloom · 02/02/2025 16:52

@Dustinsfrontteeth she's currently got a Hyperjar card and we liked the pots. Unfortunately they have added on a lot of fees whereas it was free before 😕

I loved hyperjar for the pots. I had a holiday pot, Christmas pot it was good to organise money.

Except it is just a card, they don't get an account number and sort code. Which is very irritating as I have to transfer money through my account for DC. I didn't realise until we had it activated.

MidnightBloom · 02/02/2025 16:54

@Madcats good thinking will try that and see if it works.

I use a Monzo account for my spending money, and have got 13yo a child's monzo linked to mine. So she can use her Monzo and app, but in my Monzo app I can see her spending / top up / direct debit pocket money etc.

And it's free to use abroad so handy for holidays and school trips.

ColourByNumbers88 · 02/02/2025 16:57

@MidnightBloom I thought Hyperjar's charges only jumped up for transferring very low amounts into it. Eg if I transfer in £100 there is no charge. I thought they were trying to stop you just transferring random tenners here and there. Have I got that wrong?
