Teen bank account

Looking to open a bank account for my dd who is 13. I've just tried the Lloyd's under 19 account but unfortunately they don't have any branches in Scotland. Lloyd's were asking us to go in and verify identification.

Can anyone recommend a teen bank account?

@ColourByNumbers88 oh that's interesting maybe I've picked up their email wrong. Will have a re read. She still wants a proper grown up bank account though.

Mine have Nationwide, there are still branches locally unlike most of the other traditional ones, also I bank with them. They do go into the branches occasionally (one of them found an old £20 pound note in her piggy bank recently and needed to pay it in or change it, one of them had problems with his student account and needed to sort that).

Mine have Santander accounts because DH has one. Younger child (12 at the time) had to go to branch, but older child was ok for age to open online.

I used Nationwide years ago and left them because they were a bit outdated. It's good they still have branches near you though.

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads love your username. Think will go with Santander I've had a look and she can get her own debit card to use.

i Had a RBS revolve account (albeit 15 years ago), they still do them. RBS do have branches knocking about but the parent does need an RBS account. But you don’t need proof of address for the child unless the child lives at a different address from you (at least I think that’s what it meant)

Or she wants an account where you can't see where she's spending! I'm just having a "discussion" about expenditure on bubble tea, brownies, burgers and Starbucks here...

Yes Santander is a proper acct with a debit card

None of this pay monthly nonsense for a kiddie acct which I hated the idea of

Also what I like is that when they've become overdrawn the card stops working and they get the shock of an overdraft letter Grin which teaches them the art of budgeting

KittenPause · 02/02/2025 17:49

Also it's their money so I never had the urge to feel the need to be contacted by the bank re their spending habits or being able to look it up online

I find that a ridiculous concept tbh

An overdraft letter is brilliant and makes them feel shocked Shock into the responsibly of managing their funds

Our DC have had accounts with Halifax (Bank of Scotland) since age 11.

DD has a Nationwide since she is 11. We applied with her passport and I think the child benefit letter we had for applying for secondary school and our council tax bill.

She uses online banking, has a savings account as well.

Except it is just a card, they don't get an account number and sort code. Which is very irritating as I have to transfer money through my account for DC. I didn't realise until we had it activated.

They have slightly changed that now, you can send a payment link to who ever what’s to add money. We did it with my parents for their Christmas money. Annoying they can’t send money back though.

Monzo is brilliant.

Opened accounts for 14 and 7 year olds in about five minutes.

They have their own debit cards and 14 year old has his own Monzo app with his account on and his Debit Card linked to Apple Pay so he just uses his phone to pay. I still have full oversight though so can see their accounts and balances/transactions on my own Monzo app.

Like pp have said interested in seeing how she budgets money with her own card. We have had chats about responsibility re spending and being safe online re money. Hopefully she will be sensible.
