Ever been accused of something ludicrous at work?

Inspired by a current thread.
I was once accused , by another regional admin, of leaving to do the school run every Friday. She emailed the GM and cc'd me in. All because I wasnt avaliable on to take her call on 2 occasions.
I didn't get into trouble because -
I was office based in sight of our GM.
My DC were both in Uni at the time.
The reason I wasnt at my desk was because this was the era of manual tape computer backups and 3pm on a friday was when the secure storage came to collect them.
...and as it turned out SHE was the one sneaking out early !

Yup! Myself and another nurse assistant were accused of being nasty to an elderly patient, by our boss! There were actually 3 of us and the way we were both accused made us feel sick and confused!
Anyway, I was NOT ok with this as I have never been nasty to a patient, even the abusive ones! The boss was convinced it was me or the other, even though the details were vague.
I ended up going into her office furious, with a couple of handovers that I still had and made diagrams of exactly where I was on those shifts, who I had dealt with etc. I also said I wanted to come face to face with the patient and her family! Funnily enough it was all dropped quickly after that and apparently I had "taken it far too seriously"?? No shit Sherlock?? Oh and the 3rd nurse never came back again... The one who wasn't mentioned!
Horrible feeling to be accused of something dreadful! Glad I left that place.

My first job was as a receptionist for a rather sketchy chiropractor. I got a bollocking for “bringing the practice into disrepute” because my boyfriend picked me up from work and kissed me as I got in the car. He was parked a long way from the building and it was a peck rather than a full blown snog. And then I got a lecture on my morals as he dropped me at work one morning when he’d stayed at my parents house the night before. And then telling me that my parents picking me up from work was unprofessional (they never got out of the car). Unsurprisingly they had someone else in line for the job. I warned her not to go in the consultation room when the bosses wife was there because that’s when they had sex on the treatment table.

I was accused of not sharing briefing at 7:30am with other staff when my contract doesn't start until 8:45am.

Accused of racism. I started teaching at a college, the previous teacher had been off sick for a long time so I started marking the work she gad not marked.

A lot of the work was really bad so didn't pass.

A student I had never met said I had failed her because she was black.

As I said I had not met her, I know sometimes with names you get clue about ethnicity but she had a name that could be from anywhere, say Joan Smith.

Got shouted at by ward manager in front of everyone for letting everyone down by going off sick over Christmas. I was having a miscarriage at 13 weeks. In the gynae ward across the corridor. Typical NHS.

That’s awful.
But, yes, typical NHS.

Yup. Was off work one Friday as I was having a small op done. Only the boss knew as my colleagues were really gossipy.
It was around racing season and one of my colleagues joked… watch Peggy she won’t be in tomorrow it’s Ladies Day at the races!
And of course I wasn’t in the next day.
Another colleague went above my boss and said not only had I been at the races, her husband had taped it on the telly and they had both seen me in the crowd.
It actually got taken seriously. My boss then told me my appointment cards/letters weren’t enough as evidence, they wanted a full report from the surgeon to prove when I’d arrived, time in recovery etc.
I’d had a D&C, was there early but was having a general and didn’t go down until 3. I was really poorly after and they kept me in overnight.
It was horrible having to gather all the evidence, and the colleague in question wouldn’t have it.
When I got my first mobile phone, before anyone else around had one, she then reported I’d used it in the street on my break. As I hadn’t been well and had lost a bit of weight she did suggest to a few colleagues I might have a drugs problem and was ordering them on my phone.
Again, I got pulled and had to show then my phone records. I was ringing my dad every time!
I got another job.
Saw the woman in question a few years ago at a funeral of all things and she was prodding her husband and pointing. I wanted to shout, Sheila I’ve ordered an eight ball for the after party, are you in?!
Awful, awful woman. Wouldn’t mind I’ve never even smoked a cigarette.

Edited

God that's awful. I'm so sorry that they were so terrible.

I was accused of gross misconduct for posting on Facebook that I had made 2 people cry in 1 day. Someone else made a comment about work but it was me who got investigated.

The 2 people were my parents after telling them inwas pregnant. I had been told at 16 I couldn't have children so it was a huge shock. I was 7 weeks and had to provide scans and medical evidence to back it up. They still tried to discipline me whilst i was signed off sick by their own OT (hg and pgp) and again whilst i was on maternity because I didn't turn up to meetings and trainings which funnily enough I knew nothing about.

I resigned rather than go back there!

What? Nosey fuckers.

Maliciously creeping up behind someone working at a computer screen to make them jump..for my own amusement.
It was part of a four page list of my poor behaviours going back over several years...

I like both the insight and the urge!

Booboobagins · 03/02/2025 06:56

Recently accused of always being late - I was 10mins late cos there was a major accident causing hours of tail backs. Every other day I was early. And same person accused me of leaving early when I wasn't at my desk 20mins after close of play. I worked excess hours in that job every single day. Thank God I'm not there anymore.

Also same manager got away with annihilating 7 people before me in the team. Horrible psychopathic behaviours - She offered everyone donuts but to one person asked them how they'd added value that day. When that person said what they'd done, she refused her a donut. Then made out it was a joke. But that colleague never got a donut so how was it a joke? Now she's done the same with milkshakes to another ex colleague. The employer knows about this but she's somehow being protected by the client and Programme Director. Makes me wonder what dirt she has on them.

Toxic work places...

This is from 25 years ago and still makes me mad. I was employed by a construction firm but actually worked in the premises of a water company in one of their depts, my day to day line manager was a water company employee….so guess the three of us construction firm people were kind of seconded.

there was a massive international football tournament on one day, like World Cup or something. And I wanted to see part of the match so dropped into the construction firm offices in my lunchtime down the road as they were watching it. Load of them inc a director gathered round the tv with beers.

i went back to work, one of the other girls asked if I’d had a good time. I said yes, mentioned the lads were having a beer. Now this was back in the late 90s and lunch time drinking was acceptable, everyone there did it inc in the water company.

next day the construction firm directors (inc the one who had been watching the football) turned up and dragged me into a meeting. Accused me of bismirching the company reputation by telling all and sundry about the football and drinking. They all demanded names of people who were watching the football. I should have dropped that director in it as he was obviously pretending to not know anything about it. I was 19yo and crying my eyes out but said I didn’t know anyone’s names. They shouted and shouted at me but I wasn’t sacked.

got the last laugh as the water company employed me directly the next week as they were so horrified by how I was treated!

baklava · 03/02/2025 07:03

I was called into the directors office as my line manager had complained about me. Apparently the issues were that I was older than she was and she thought I didn’t like her.

Icequeen01 · 03/02/2025 07:20

Back in the 80's I was accused by a colleague of stealing a 50p which she had apparently left on her desk. Obviously 50p was worth a bit more in those days but still a ridiculously low amount but I had never seen or touched a 50p on her desk.

Our Office Manager overheard the conversation and could see I was really upset by the accusation and reassured me that no-one thought I had taken the 50p. A week later said colleague was arrested at work for stealing another colleagues bank card, withdrawing money (she had noticed from working with this colleague that they kept a note inside their wallet with the PIN number on it!) before returning it back to their wallet. Luckily another colleague spotted her returning the card and raised the alarm.

MinnieMountain · 03/02/2025 07:38

Not me but 2 colleagues had a difference of opinion about a file when colleague A was covering for colleague B’s team leader. A told HR that B had called her a cunt.

B will certainly stand up for herself but everyone knew she rarely even swears.

Deathraystare · 03/02/2025 07:40

I believe I have told this before.

My line manager is also the cashier for patients' money. A lady came to go to the cashier. We explained that she would be back from lunch at 2pm and could she come back? Just before 2pm my line manager and the other receptionist agreed that the receptionist should have her assessment. I asked what about the staff member coming back at 2pm and was told she would just have to wait.

She came back and I told her what had happened. She went off alarmingly. She asked for a form but I said we didn't have any and I would imagine she would have to wait for cashiers to open. That was when I was accused of racism and she even went on about slavery! She thought for some reason I just did not want to let her in!

Eventually you could see by her face that she realised how ludicrous this all was but I do get upset when everything is explained away with racism.

One from DH.
He was driving a taxi whilst smoking.
Member of the public rang up the switchboard and gave his reg plate - not his badge number.
Funny because
He has never smoked- he had a pen in his mouth.
We owned the taxi firm.
She was put through to him to complain about him.
Batshit.

When I was 19 the directors PA hauled me into her office and said she had to raise it with me that I had dressed inappropriately the week prior when we had our French owners visiting.

I recounted what I’d worn that day, smart trousers and a high necked sleeveless blouse with only my arms showing, she said she wasn’t happy that when I was slightly bent over the fax machine my top rose a bit at the back and that was inappropriate.

I now know it’s because I was young and slim and it was pure jealousy on her part, but I was so self conscious at the time - I will FOREVER wish I’d had the guts to reply if she thought it was appropriate and professional to wear such low cut tops everyday with full heaving bosoms on show for our French owners…fuck you Alison!!

Danikm151 · 03/02/2025 08:44

Stealing money when it was me who raised the alarm that a client’s payment wasn’t logged on the system anymore.
they interviewed me and accused me of stealing it as I had 2 jobs- that they knew about. Reminded them I had 2 jobs so I didn’t need to steal money. They said they would need to escalate to the police if there was no confession.

turns out a male member of staff was logging on as other staff members- deleting records and taking money out the safe to tide him over till payday then adding it back in. He was let go - no police involved.

I was pissed!

I was a SENTA and was brought in to work 1:1 with a child that had complex behaviour issues, he had 3 other SENTA's in less than 12 months as he was a real handful. I stuck with him and after 6 months the teacher pulled me aside and had a right go, she said i was making him look to good and that i needed to be far more negative about him. The HT and the teacher wanted him removed to a specialist school. I asked if they wanted me to lie about his behaviour and i was told yes. A week later the Head from the specialist school came to assess the little boy, the teacher wound the poor wee soul up until he kicked off just in time for his assessment. I handed in my notice that day.

Wow that's absolutely disgusting from them

LadyAsnowt · 03/02/2025 08:59

I wasn't formally accused, but "evidence" was being gathered that I had stolen my boss' bank card and withdrawn money from nearby ATMs. It was in the days before there was CCTV on virtually every London street corner.

Boss was an expat who had all communications from the bank, including cards and PIN numbers, sent to the office.

They dropped it all after the bank sent him out a new card to his home address which was also stolen and used - so it was clearly not me or anyone else in the office as we had no access to his home.

I learned afterwards from someone in HR that one senior manager in particular had been hell bent on having me for this, to the extent that he was combing CCTV footage to see whether the times I went in and out of the building tallied with times the cash had been withdrawn. As I was in and out to meetings a lot, I'm pretty sure that at least one of the times would have fitted his narrative. All this happened about 40 years ago, but I still sometimes go cold at the idea that i could have been formally accused of theft.

I get that completely, but I was the one who was told the news and merely congratulated. I wasn’t the one who shared the news, hence why it was ludicrous that she went to my manager to say I had breached confidentiality.

When I was very young and a junior employee in my first office job an early announcement went out by email that one of the big Directors had stepped down. By the time I got in at 9am the large picture of him had been removed from the wall. Manager came up to me demanding to know where it was, I said I wasn’t sure but presumably one of the senior team who gets in early had removed it after the announcement. She then proceeded to make me stand up whilst she searched my desk drawers for the pic of this middle aged man who looked like Ian Beale as if I’d stolen it to stare at ffs

This is absolutely hilarious 😂

Mindedmy · 03/02/2025 10:10

Maybe not ludicrous but..as a teen I worked in a shop at the weekend. My till was always £10, £20or £30 down over a period of a month or so. I knew it wasnt me, (thought it might have been my own mistake the first time so was very conscious of all transactions thereafter). After a while I clocked that “Tracey” a married mum in her 40s (and sleeping with the boss) always offered to give me a break etc and took over my till.
I was given a warning but I handed my notice in immediately as couldn’t see how to avoid the problem given the affair relationship.
I just hope she really needed that money. What a bitch.

teaandbiscuitsface · 03/02/2025 10:18

The incompetent manager of my summer job 20 years ago accused me of turning up late one Saturday morning, and then changed the rota in an attempt to cover his back.

What had actually happened was that he had forgotten to record a group of 20 or 30 people were booked in for coffee/bacon rolls early before their round of golf or change the rota accordingly to ensure the place was open and staffed.

The assistant manager and cook gave him short shrift for trying to blame it on me! Spineless weasel!

Spicykitten · 03/02/2025 10:27

Mine is nowhere near as bad as some of the others on this thread. However, the only thing I’ve ever been accused of was leaving work early, and without permission once.

When I asked to see the CCTV footage of me allegedly leaving early. Then they told me they “haven’t got footage.”

If anything, I was always the last to leave work. That’s what annoyed me the most!
