Dress code for a gig

TooOldForThisShit1 · 31/01/2025 21:30

I’m 45 mum of 2 young girls and I’m going to a gig next week. Don’t know the band, never heard of them but my SIL has invited me. I love my SIL and will be a good opportunity to catch up (she lives around 2 hours away but we are meeting in the middle)

I haven’t been to a gig for donkeys years, I do have a bit of social anxiety, always think I look awful but I’ve worked so much on my confidence and my wardrobe.

Heres what I’m planning - jeans, Anine Bing T-shirt, adidas bold trainers and a grey wool coat

is this suitable for an indie type band?

Sounds fine.

ScaredyMa · 31/01/2025 21:32

Sounds fine but you will melt in a hat! Gigs are normally dark, sweaty places! (Well the ones I go to are Grin)

ScaredyMa · 31/01/2025 21:33

I read coat as hat 🙈 ignore me!!

There's no dress code at gigs, just wear what you're comfortable in.

cariadlet · 31/01/2025 21:42

I wear trainers or Doc Martins, jeans, tshirt and hoodie to gigs. Maybe a coat, depending on the weather. Tbh, that's just how I dress if I'm not at work anyway.
We mostly go to see rock or punk bands and that's how most people dress but nobody's really interested in what anyone else is wearing. I think indy gigs are the same.

ScrummyDiva2 · 31/01/2025 21:58

No coat- definitely a hoodie you can tie round your waist if it gets too hot!

Suffernsocotash · 31/01/2025 22:32

As few clothes as possible, and maybe a fabric tote to put your coat into, or a jacket you can tie round your waist instead.
Also, if you’re using it as an opportunity to catch up with your SIL, don’t be one of those awful people who chat all the way through the gig. If you want to do that, stay in the bar/smoking area.

HowardTJMoon · 31/01/2025 22:40

Without knowing who the band is it's difficult to say for sure but you'll probably be fine. It'll be dark, cramped and noisy. Few people will notice what you're wearing and way fewer will care. Have a great time! Live music is fab.

ICanTellYouMissMe · 31/01/2025 22:49

The only person whose outfit matters at a gig, is the artist. Wear whatever you want to stand in a darkened room for hours on end. Nobody will notice or care.

Bigfellabamboo · 31/01/2025 22:50

I misread and thought this was dress code for a pig. I thought wow this is going to be a good thread 😂😂

ICanTellYouMissMe · 31/01/2025 23:13

Honestly I find that the air con is so good in venues now that it doesn't get that hot. It's not like the 90s where you sweated through your clothes. Jeans and a top is fine, and a layer you can take off and tie round your waist if you need to.

I never take a bag: phone and keys in the pockets is easier.

ThePolarBearWhoLostHisCrown · 01/02/2025 01:10

Jeans and a t-shirt is perfect, a coat/jacket/jumper you can tie around your waist and comfy shoes for standing/dancing in. Plus a cross body bag to keep phone and keys in. I'm off to a gig tomorrow night and that's what I'm planning on! Enjoy the gig - who are you seeing?

TooOldForThisShit1 · 01/02/2025 06:17

Thanks everyone - I think I may have to just rethink the coat as it’s a long wool coat (but I’m middle aged I don’t like being cold 😂)

the band we’re seeing is Inhaler

RedRiverShore5 · 01/02/2025 06:45

Don't wear a decent coat like your nice long wool one sounds like it could end up on the floor or drink spilled on it.

RedRiverShore5 · 01/02/2025 06:55

As PPs said I would wear a casual type coat/hoody that is easy to hold or tie round your waist, also secure crossbody bag. I think it's only large gigs that have bag policies but check that as well

TooOldForThisShit1 · 01/02/2025 07:00

I think I’m going to go with this jacket, I’ve been eyeing it up for a little while

Inhaler are good live. Should be a nice mix of people in the crowd too.

I'm a jeans/T-shirt and jacket tied round my waist girl gig wise. Comfort over everything

BendingSpoons · 01/02/2025 07:43

The gig I went to last week had a cloakroom. Was worth the £2 to be warm but also not have to hold my coat. It was a small venue so easy to collect at the end of the night.

Catapaulting · 01/02/2025 07:46

Defo ditch the wool coat. Someone might spill beer down it when walking past. And make sure your trainers aren’t super nice ones for the same reason.

AreYouShittingMe · 01/02/2025 08:27

Enjoy the gig! I saw Inhaler supporting Sam Fender with my DS a few years ago and really enjoyed them!
As PP have said, you won't need the coat.

OurFlagMeansAfternoonTea · 01/02/2025 08:37

I agree about wearing a jacket you can tie around your waist. Some places have cloakrooms, but there's a massive queue for them after the show.

cariadlet · 01/02/2025 08:37

There's a split about whether to wear a coat. It depends on how you're getting to the venue.

Car and parking outside? No need.

Walking or public transport and then a bit of a walk? Definitely. Especially this time of year.

It's more about whether you're going to freeze on the way rather than needing a coat at the gig.

Exactly this! I’m getting the train which will take just over an hour and then we’ll have to walk to the venue, so I definitely do need a coat I just don’t think it’s worth risking my lovely long wool coat even though it would keep me lovely & warm

OP posts:
Cleansharp · 01/02/2025 08:44

A short jacket so you can hold it easily if you can't tie it aound your waist. Bear in mind gigs can be sweaty and sticky, drinks spilled etc so I wouldn't buy something new unless you're happy to potentially have to wash it straight away if needed.

TooOldForThisShit1 · 01/02/2025 08:52

Well we’ll be going for a couple of drinks along the way so I do want to be at least semi smart which is why I’m going to order the jacket
