Microwave rice

mummysmagicmedicine · 31/01/2025 19:25

Bit of an odd one.
When I make rice I only make it for DD who will eat half the packet (she doesn’t like pasta so has as an alternative). I get the microwave bags usually Asda or Sainsbury’s.
But I am aware and extremely paranoid about food poisoning that you cannot reheat rice, is there a way I can use a microwave bag of rice for two consecutive dinners?

Apologies this is so so stupid🙄

You could buy veetee basmati rice who does 2 individual portions joined together as one. If you Google you will see what I mean as I'm terrible at describing!

Okdaisy · 31/01/2025 19:27

I just scoop half out and store on tupperware before heating it, so it only gets heated once

BigDahliaFan · 31/01/2025 19:27

It’s fine to reheat rice if you’ve cooked it quickly and properly. I reheat it all the time.

but just empty half the pouch into a bowl. And microwave it and keep the other half in the packet.

You can reheat rice as long as the rice is cooled quickly and refrigerated. Although I'm sure the prepacked cooked rice has been treated so it doesn't contain the bacteria that produces the toxin that causes the food poisoning.

WaltzingWaters · 31/01/2025 19:29

I put half the pack in a Tupperware and microwave it. Then keep the other half in the pack for the next day.

dementedpixie · 31/01/2025 19:29

And yes, Veetee has a plastic prepacked rice that has 2 sections so you can cook one or two small portions at a time.

In my opinion they're the tastiest ones as well! I particularly like their sticky rice, I can never make it like that as much as I try 😂

Thank you so much to all who have replied!

Does it matter what size tuppawear I store the leftovers in and would I put the remaining rice that I plan to use the next day in the fridge or cupboard?

In the fridge. And it really doesn't matter what size tupperware.. I think you are overthinking it!

RunSlowTalkFast · 31/01/2025 19:38

I just put the half I want to heat up in a bowl then fold the packet down, put a clip on it and put in in the fridge.

AwakeNotThruChoice · 31/01/2025 19:39

Or tip the rice you want to heat up onto/into the plate/bowl you are serving it in. Then just fold the rice packet over, stick a peg on and stick in fridge.

Techno56 · 31/01/2025 19:39

It will also tell you on the pouch how to store the half that you haven't used - something like refrigerate and eat within X days
I suspect it will say within two days

shellyleppard · 31/01/2025 19:42

@Nightscroller1 these are brilliant..... I'm the only rice eater and they are perfect portions

Yes this is what we do as well. They are handy when making a quick meal just for one person.

Phil Wang does a whole sketch on how Asian people are incredibly lax around rice reheating and are completely astounded by how in the UK we treat it like the most poisonous, dangerous substance ever... Smile

I think you've had the right advice here - put whatever you don't use in the packet, sealed in the fridge and heat it when you want to eat it

ChloeCannotCanCan · 31/01/2025 19:58

Found it! Phil Wang on Graham Norton via TikTok...

I've been reheating it for years. I think you can ignore the fact that it's ready cooked in the bag because it's a completely sterile environment. (I know this because people use them to inject mushroom spores.) I don't leave it for more than two days in the fridge though.

Rewis · 31/01/2025 20:01

I reheat rice. I even take cooked rice from the freezer. Yet to have any problems. There are tons of left over rice recipes from Asian countries.

Only microwave half of the packet at a time. Keep the 2nd half in the fridge closed over for the next day.

mummysmagicmedicine · 31/01/2025 20:33

Packet says once opened consume immediately but I think I will try clipping and putting in fridge.

Thank you so much for all the advice and reassurance!

Just thought I would add, the issue is never with the reheating of rice. It's leaving it at room temperature when it's cooked, for too long. The bacteria concerned then produces a toxin and heating the rice up after that doesn't get rid of the toxin.

So as long as leftover rice (or opened, unheated micro rice) isn't left out of the fridge for long it's totally fine to reheat.

FebruaryCrow · 31/01/2025 21:04

Another vote for Vee-Tee rices, and the pots are recyclable via my local Tesco 'bring banks'.

Joseph makes a pot you can make rice in the microwave in. It consistently makes perfect rice and it has a cup for measuring rice and water in. And a list of timings. Once you have decided what the ideal amount of rice is for your daughter you can just repeatedly make that amount. And you’ll never have waste

I’m going to look into that! Thank you so much for the recommendation, I really appreciate it.
