Eczema round the eyes - wonder cream?

helpyhelperton · 30/01/2025 17:29

Get the occasional flare-up and usually goes away on its own.

However it's really sore - is there a wonder product that is safe to use round the eyes - I know steroids aren't the best thing for this area?

Thank you!

I have the original cream in the tube. Just read the label and it does say avoid contact with the eyes……bloody love epimax so I’m now in mourning. It’s worked brilliantly for my sensitive sore skin. Shame my eyes might now fall out 😣

If you read the drug safety alert it is for the EpiMax ointment rather than the cream so not the same issue with potential ocular toxicity, but as you say you need to avoid contact with the eyes.

ADifferentSong · 30/01/2025 19:47

Tacrolimus (Protopic). You can get it on prescription from your GP. It is safe to use round the eyes. Please don’t use any kind of steroid. You can get more information from the National Eczema Society.

Thanks @kaurigold neither of those are mine. Mines the 'epimax isomol gel" with a purple label. It makes me have blisters that also could be Mila but surely if they were Mila they would come at other times bit just the day after I've used the epimax??

Isomel gel info

It seems to be another ‘avoid contact with the eyes’ product rather than ‘do not use on face’

I’m also pretty atopic. Protopic ointment is a devil. I find it itches and burns for several hours, but also works really well, so sometimes I grit my teeth and apply it. Vaseline after washing my face with aqueous cream (but you have to wash every last bit off) is my regular routine.

quirkychick · 30/01/2025 20:10

@maltravers I didn't find Protopic (tacrolimus) stung much. I also use it only every couple of days, now. Nothing else worked.

Puddock1 · 30/01/2025 20:16

I agree with previous posters that have recommended trying the protopic ointments. It’s the only thing that has worked for my eyelid eczema.

Tiredforfive45 · 30/01/2025 20:23

Bepantham is the only thing that works to keep my flare ups at bay.

Bubblebuttress · 30/01/2025 20:42

vaseline is all you need

OhBollocks23 · 30/01/2025 20:47

I actually found Lush's Enchanted Eye Cream worked wonders, which I didn't expect at all. They gave me a sample and it was so effective I've since shelled out for it myself.

Mossstitch · 30/01/2025 20:51

Lavera organic all in one cream, in a round tin like boot polish, even if I get it in my eyes it doesn't sting! (I'm an allergic type person, hay-fever, eczema, hives to anything with perfume in it). This goes on my face most days👍

MuggleMe · 30/01/2025 21:03

I always just use a tiny smear of hydrocortisone, 2-3 times a day max for a couple of days. Usually cleared up really quickly.

RampantIvy · 30/01/2025 21:52

DD has just had a raft of allergy testing for skincare products and the main allergen is a preservative found in a lot of creams and shampoos called Benzalkonium chloride. This preservative is found in a lot of creams recommended for eczema and can leave the face feeling like it is on fire.

DD now uses Cetraben as it doesn't burn her face.

Another one to look out for is Triethanolamine and another is glucosides which are used s a foaming agent in shampoos and other similar products.

I hope this helps some of you.

I was also going to suggest Aquaphor. Also weleda camomile balm works very well. Both very greasy though.

I use the Weleda balm for my eczema around the eyes too. I had it for years, got rid of it with cream from the Organic Pharmacy (expensive though!) and the weleda stuff keeps it away! 🎉

Avene Soothing Eye Cream helps my eyelid eczema & clears it overnight. I’m really atopic and allergic to a number of ingredients but this is very soothing.

I tried so many and they all really really stung. Couldn't even use E45.

Eventually found Clinique all about eyes - rich. The thick one in a pot, not the gel one.

Amazing. Used it morning and night and it never came back.

Mango673 · 31/01/2025 07:32

Hi OP,

I don't have any cream recommendations but this thread jumped out at me due to an experience I had a while back.

I had eczema around my eyes for 18 months and in the crook of my arm for years - I applied steroid cream which got rid of it for a couple of days but it never properly went away.

I started Googling eczema and came across a page that talked about a nutrient deficiency that can cause eczema....the mineral molybdenum. It mentioned other symptoms associated with deficiency and I had those, too.

I started supplementing with molybdenum and the eczema was reduced in 10 days and was gone within 4 weeks. I took molybdenum for about 2 months then stopped. It has never come back.

I tried lots of things, but ended up getting tacrolimus prescribed - which absolutely worked. You need to protect your skin from the sun, though.

This is what worked for me.

tappitytaptap · 31/01/2025 07:53

This is very timely as I have the same problem! Sounds like a few days of hydrocortisone will help so thanks for the thread Grin

Ilovelowry · 31/01/2025 08:12

My GP and dermatologist both told me to use hydrocortisone on my eyelids which I do regularly. I get excema all over my face since turning 40.

I don't know how anyone with excema can even touch vaseline. It makes my sore skin so much worse and it weeps/sweats underneath the layer. It creates this sort of layer which makes my skin tight and horrible. Hydrocortisone ointment does the same thing.

DeathMetalMum · 31/01/2025 08:22

I've had success with Aproderm ointment. You can get a starter pack with a few of their range or it also comes in a 50g tube. It is fairly heavy and greasy but does work well.

Hello there! How long did it take for the protopic to work? How long have you used it continuously for? Do you use it every couple of days as a maintenance? Thanks so much in advance

Hi there were you advised to get it under control with hydrocortisone first then use protopic?

I have used the Protopic for about 2 yrs. I currently only use it maybe once a week, when I get the beginning of an eczema patch. I can't remember how long it took - perhaps a couple of weeks? But nothing else worked and it did get rid of it. I think I used it twice a day to start with and have gradually reduced, it did sting a bit the first few times, but I found it soon stopped. I use a cotton bud to put it on accurately - you don't want it in your eyes! I hope that's helpful.

Hi no I was told just to start using the protopic ointment straight away. I’d originally been prescribed pimecrolimus cream which made my eyelids even worse but when I switched to protopic (tacrolimus) it cleared up quite quickly.
